Kanda Treats: Step into Showa-Era Dessert Shop "Takemura"

“Takemura” is a traditional Japanese dessert shop founded in 1930, with nearly 100 years of history. Stepping into this shop in Awajicho, Tokyo, feels like traveling back to the Showa era. Just a 3-minute walk from Awajicho Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line, Takemura attracts visitors with its nostalgic exterior. Despite the surrounding tall buildings, the shop retains its charming old-world vibe.

I stumbled upon this delightful spot while casually browsing for nearby dessert shops on Tabelog, a popular Japanese restaurant review website. Little did I know that I would discover a hidden treasure steeped in history.

The building of “Takemura” has been designated as a historic site by the Tokyo government. Its traditional Japanese design creates a Showa-era atmosphere. Inside, the simple yet cozy decor provides a warm dining experience.

Upon seating, each guest is served a warm cup of Sakura Tea (桜湯), featuring a salted cherry blossom. The tea is light with a delicate salty taste, both refreshing and unique.

The menu is primarily in Japanese, but the dessert models at the counter make it easier to choose. Popular treats include:

  • Fried Manju (揚げまんじゅう): A crispy fried bun filled with sweet red bean paste. Light and moderately sweet, it’s a customer favorite.
  • Awa Zenzai (あわぜんざい): A sticky mix of red bean paste and millet, often paired with salty pickles or green tea to balance its sweetness.
  • Anmitsu (あんみつ): A traditional dessert of agar jelly, red bean paste, and fruits, served with black sugar syrup. The Apricot Anmitsu (あんずあんみつ) adds tangy apricot for a sweet-sour twist.
  • Cream Anmitsu (クリームあんみつ): Topped with vanilla ice cream for a rich, creamy flavor.

At “Takemura,” desserts are made using traditional methods, with their homemade black sugar syrup standing out for its rich, sweet flavor that enhances every dish. The red bean paste is smooth and subtly sweet, perfectly complementing the other ingredients.

Due to its popularity, the shop often attracts many customers. It’s best to visit during off-peak hours to avoid long queues. Note that each guest must order at least one dessert, and photography is prohibited except for the food.

A visit to Takemura offers more than just delicious treats—it’s an encounter with history and nostalgia. Even the fried manju brought home as a gift surprises with its rich flavor.

For travelers visiting Tokyo, Takemura is a must-try. It’s not just a taste experience but a sweet journey through time.
