Kokura Castle is one of the few castles in Japan with a distinctive architectural style. It was first built in 1602 by the military commander Hosokawa Tadaoki. Its most striking feature is the karazukuri keep: the top floor is larger than the floors below, and the keep has none of the common decorative gables such as chidori-hafu or karahafu, giving it a clean and imposing appearance.

During the Edo period, Kokura Castle was the centre of the Kokura domain and an important political and military base in Kyushu. The keep burned down in 1837 and was not rebuilt until 1959. The keep seen today was reconstructed from Edo-period drawings.

Interactive experiences: Virtual-reality activities let you dress as a samurai, ninja or princess, try yabusame-style horse archery and sit in a daimyo palanquin to experience the atmosphere of sankin-kotai.
Geiko the Tiger: A huge tiger painting called “Geiko” greets visitors at the entrance and symbolises the castle’s protective spirit.

2F: Former Lords and Kokura History

Domain lords: Learn about the Hosokawa and Ogasawara families who ruled the Kokura domain through family trees, historical materials and a reproduction of Hosokawa Tadaoki’s armour.
Sōko the Tiger: The female tiger painting on the second floor faces the first-floor “Geiko” and represents seeing visitors safely on their way. Together, the two giant tiger paintings are one of the castle’s most memorable features.

3F: The Duel of Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro

The Ganryujima duel: This floor introduces the legendary swordsmen Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro and the famous duel witnessed by the Hosokawa family.
Photo experience: At the Ganryujima photo spot, pose as Sasaki Kojiro beside a three-dimensional Miyamoto Musashi model swinging down from above.

4F: Special Exhibition Space

Gallery: This open exhibition space changes periodically, usually presenting local culture, art projects or community works.

5F: Observation Deck and Castle Café

City views: The top floor is an observation deck where you can look over modern Kokura from a lord’s perspective and imagine the Edo-period castle town.
Castle café: One of Kokura Castle’s unusual features is the chance to enjoy coffee or sweets on the top floor. On Saturday evenings it becomes the “Night Castle” bar.

The city government decided to take over operations and reposition the park. After a comprehensive renovation and conceptual overhaul, the park was reborn in 2002 as "Itozu no Mori Park." Hiraodai is best known for its distinctive karst landscape. White limestone rocks are scattered across the broad plateau and have been shaped by rain over many years. From a distance they look like sheep grazing on the grassland, giving the area its nickname, the “Sheep Field”. Hiking, cycling and picnicking on the open lawn all offer different ways to enjoy the scenery.

The underground landscape is just as special. More than 200 limestone caves are found around Hiraodai, including the Sembutsu Stalactite Cave, designated a national natural monument.

Getting there

The fastest route from Kokura Station takes about 1 hour 5 minutes and costs ¥1,390: take the Kitakyushu Monorail to Tokuriki-kōdan-mae, then transfer to the Odekake Kotsu Higashidani Line bus for Hiraodai Nature Observation Center. You can get off at Hiraodai Iriguchi depending on your destination.
