In the labyrinth streets of Shinjuku, after shopping at ‘Bicqlo’ and ‘Isetan Department Store,’ replenish your energy with hidden gems. Introducing ‘Gandhi,’ a European-style curry restaurant in Shinjuku 3-chome, established in 1972.
Founded in 1972, this traditional restaurant, now run by Mr. Mizutani Fu, carries on the legacy of his father. Despite its Indian-sounding name, ‘Gandhi’ serves authentic European curry. Their signature ‘beef curry’ has captivated diners for decades. Enjoy innovative dishes like ‘tomato cheese curry,’ a perfect blend of freshness and flavor, a unique combination in its time.
Gandhi’ maintains traditional cooking methods. Each dish takes four days to prepare, from selecting ingredients to simmering. Carefully chosen beef, tomatoes, onions, and spices create a feast for the senses. The flavor remains consistent even after nearly 50 years.
More than just a curry restaurant, ‘Gandhi’ has a musical soul, playing rock, jazz, reggae, and more. They believe both curry and music require seasoning, each with its unique flavor. From the record collection to the full tables and delicious curry, everything speaks to the enduring quality of this establishment.
Popular Recommendations
Their “Beef Curry” is particularly popular, known for its rich spice and tender beef, while the “Tomato Cheese Curry,” with its sweet and sour tomatoes and smooth cheese, breaks the mold of traditional curry and is especially loved by female diners. Compared to other European curries, it has a heavier spice and a lighter sweetness. “Fukujinzuke” is placed on the table to supplement the sweetness. The “Fukujinzuke” here is different from others, made with a variety of ingredients, offering a richer flavor.
Although the store space is not large, every corner is full of stories. Tucked away in an alley, you can find this culinary paradise in the urban jungle by looking for the bright yellow sign and climbing the narrow stairs. Whether it’s a regular afternoon or a leisurely weekend, savoring a bowl of hot European curry here can bring a touch of warmth to your busy life.
