Okinawa West Coast: Crafts, Cliffs & Blue Cave Activities
Continuing from the previous post about American Village in Okinawa, the route north along Route 58 is the highlight of Okinawa’s west coast, known as the “Coastal Scenic Drive.”
This stretch extends from Onna to Yomitan and finally near Nago, showcasing Okinawa’s most magnificent cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and white sandy beaches.

Main Attractions
🏺 Pottery Village
Pottery Village is a must-visit for ceramic enthusiasts in Okinawa, featuring local workshops and traditional kilns, resembling a living pottery museum. The handcrafted items here are unique, often showcasing fish patterns and decorative designs. Simple coffee mugs or small plates are more appealing than typical souvenirs from convenience stores.
After exploring the workshops, you can enjoy meals served in local pottery at nearby artistic cafes, making your afternoon worthwhile. If you’re looking for authentic Okinawan handmade gifts, this is the best spot.
🗿 Experience Murasaki Village
Murasaki Village, once a filming location for historical dramas, is now Okinawa’s largest Ryukyu cultural experience park, offering over 100 interactive activities. You can paint shisa lions, make brown sugar, try Ryukyu dyeing, and even wear traditional Ryukyu clothing for photos, with staff guidance available, no prior practice needed.
Notably, from January to March each year, the park hosts the “Ryukyu Lantern Festival,” where colorful lanterns illuminate the ancient city walls, creating a historical theater atmosphere at night. If you visit central Okinawa in winter, this night experience is highly recommended.
🌊 Cape Manzamo
Cape Manzamo, located at the western tip of Okinawa Island, features a 30-meter high coral reef cliff that stretches along the coastline. Standing at the edge offers a stunning visual impact. This area has one of the few open white lighthouses in Okinawa; climbing the 99 steps rewards you with breathtaking unobstructed views of the blue sea. Don’t forget to take a photo with the largest shisa lion in Okinawa, “Manzamo Shisa,” nearby.
Cape Manzamo is also a popular spot for watching sunsets in Okinawa, with the coral reef cliff transforming beautifully at dusk, making it worthwhile to linger if time permits.
🌊 Maeda Cape: Blue Cave
The Blue Cave is one of only two marine blue light caves in the world, the other being in Capri, Italy. Okinawa’s Blue Cave is considered the best snorkeling spot, where sunlight penetrates the water at a specific angle, creating an amazing blue light effect that is best experienced in person.
You can choose between snorkeling or kayaking experiences, both available for booking at shops near Maeda Cape. It’s recommended to go in the morning for the best light and sea conditions. Even if you don’t want to get in the water, walking along the cape trail to the highest point overlooking the cave area is still worth the visit.
🐘 Cape Manzamo
Cape Manzamo is the most famous landmark on Route 58 in Okinawa. From the side, the coral reef cliff resembles an elephant’s trunk, giving it its name. The sea reflects different shades of blue due to the coral reef, making every photo look like a postcard. Historical records even mention that a Japanese emperor was awed by the magnificent sea view here, highlighting its uniqueness.
The park has recently updated its air-conditioned visitor center, with a souvenir area on the first floor and an observation deck on the second floor for only ¥100, allowing you to enjoy the sea view during Okinawa’s hot summer, designed for practicality.
🚗 Okinawa One-Day Tour Itinerary

Attraction Introduction
Located in central Okinawa, Yomitan Village's "Yachimun no Sato" is a pottery village that offers a serene escape filled with primitive artistic vibes. This is not just a single tourist building but a settlement made up of 19 independent workshops. Strolling through the village with red-tiled roofs, you'll see potters' works drying in the sun and lush greenery typical of the tropics. The most famous landmark here is the "Kitagama" climbing kiln with 13 connected rooms, whose massive stepped structure and red brick chimney stand out spectacularly against the blue sky. Visitors can purchase unique handcrafted pottery or enjoy coffee in the attached café, sipping from exquisite local ceramics while experiencing the slow pace of Okinawan life.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
"Yachimun" means "pottery" in the Okinawan dialect. The history of Okinawan pottery dates back to the Ryukyu Kingdom, originally concentrated in Naha City's "Tsuboya." However, with urban development in the 1970s, to avoid smoke from kilns affecting living conditions, the pottery master Jiro Kinjo, recognized as a "Living National Treasure" in Japan, first moved his workshop to Yomitan Village, prompting other potters to follow suit and leading to the birth of "Yachimun no Sato."
This place preserves the "climbing kiln" firing technique that has been passed down for hundreds of years, utilizing a sloped structure to allow heat to flow upward, resulting in pottery that displays rich, warm, and layered colors. These ceramics are not just crafts but embody the aesthetic of Okinawan life. Their patterns often incorporate fish motifs, arabesques, or scenes from Okinawa's natural landscape, reflecting the Okinawan people's respect for nature and their optimistic outlook on life.

Store Introduction
Located deep in the ceramic town of Okinawa, Yomitan, Yokotaya-gama was established in 2002 by renowned potter Chibana Minoru. Mr. Chibana studied under the master Oumi Masaki and what makes his studio unique is its harmonious environment with nature—this land was originally a dense forest that Mr. Chibana personally cleared, diverted water, and spent six years building a five-chamber climbing kiln. Unlike many studios that share kilns, Yokotaya-gama has its own climbing kiln, conducting large-scale firings only twice a year, with each piece reflecting the artisan's deep commitment to the land and tradition.
Product Features
The works of Yokotaya-gama are based on Okinawan traditional ceramics "Yachimun," showcasing a vibrant "beauty of use." The products mainly consist of everyday tableware such as bowls, plates, mugs, and teapots. Their uniqueness lies in the use of self-prepared clay and white slip, with Mr. Chibana crafting the bodies and his wife responsible for the painting. The patterns are often depicted with bold and fluid strokes, featuring dots, grass patterns, or geometric shapes, with warm glazes and a thick texture that exudes a heartfelt handmade feel. As one of the few studios that insist on traditional climbing kiln firing, the colors of the works subtly change with the kiln's heat, making each piece a one-of-a-kind artwork cherished by many ceramic enthusiasts.

Attractions Introduction
The "Yuntanza Museum" is located in the historically rich Yomitan village, adjacent to the magnificent World Heritage site "Zakimi Castle Ruins." This museum reopened in 2018 after renovations, blending modern aesthetics with traditional Okinawan architectural elements. The museum has two floors: the first floor mainly introduces the architectural beauty of Zakimi Castle and the natural scenery of Yomitan village; the second floor delves into local archaeology, folk culture, and the history of the Okinawa Battle during World War II. It features many interactive installations, such as a castle wall puzzle and audiovisual guides, allowing both adults and children to experience the charm of Yomitan village through "sight, touch, and sound." After visiting the museum, you can walk up to the castle walls of Zakimi Castle Ruins for a breathtaking view of the East China Sea, making it a must-visit spot for photography enthusiasts.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
"Yuntanza" is the Okinawan dialect pronunciation of "Yomitan Mountain." This land has long been one of the important cultural birthplaces of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The nearby Zakimi Castle, designed by the renowned architect "Gusukuma" in the 15th century, showcases exceptional curved wall techniques that reached their peak in both military defense and aesthetics, and was designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2000.
The museum's cultural significance is profound, particularly emphasizing Yomitan village's historical connections with the world. Yomitan village was once a bustling trade gateway, which nurtured the unique "Yomitan Pottery" and "Tsuboya-yaki" ceramic culture. The folk exhibition area in the museum meticulously recreates the living scenes of ancient Ryukyu homes and traditional festivals, allowing visitors to transcend time and feel the resilience and artistic spirit of the Ryukyu people, who have preserved and passed down their heritage amidst natural challenges and wartime turmoil.

Attraction Introduction
Zakimi Castle Ruins, located in Yomitan on the main island of Okinawa, is the only UNESCO World Heritage site in the "Ryukyu Kingdom's Castles and Related Heritage" that allows free access to its castle walls for panoramic views. This ancient castle is renowned for its aesthetically pleasing curved stone walls, showcasing exceptional stone construction techniques of its time. Standing atop the approximately 125-meter-high hilltop walls, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view, with the stunning scenery of Cape Zanpa and the East China Sea to the west, and on clear days, even the Kerama Islands in the distance. This spot is also famous for sunset viewing, where the evening glow casts a serene and sacred beauty over the ancient limestone walls.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
Zakimi Castle was built in the early 15th century (1416–1422) by the renowned castle builder in Ryukyu history, Gosamaru. During the late "Three Kingdoms Period" of Ryukyu, it was constructed to monitor and counteract forces opposing the king and to protect the Shuri royal authority. Gosamaru utilized his exceptional architectural skills to create a fortress that combined military defense with aesthetics.
The cultural core lies in the advanced "stone stacking technique." The castle walls employed "sokuhō" (processing stones into polygonal shapes for tight fitting) and "burai" methods, overcoming the local soft red soil while showcasing beautiful wavy curves. This design eliminated shooting dead angles for military purposes while giving the hard stone walls a gentle vitality in aesthetics. Although this site was used as an artillery position by the Japanese military during World War II and later converted into a radar station by the U.S. military, the main castle walls remain relatively intact, making it an important cultural heritage for studying the castle-building history and military evolution of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

The park's origin is quite interesting; it was originally a filming location for the 1993 NHK historical drama "The Wind of Ryukyu." After the series ended, the local government and private sector collaborated to transform it into a cultural tourism facility to preserve the meticulously researched scenes modeled after the 14th to 15th century Ryukyu Kingdom's peak. The architectural style in the park is heavily influenced by Chinese Lingnan culture and South Sea trade, showcasing Ryukyu's historical position as a "bridge between nations."
In terms of cultural significance, the park is not just a static display of buildings but embodies the Okinawan people's love for their land and traditional crafts. The annual "Ryukyu Lantern Festival" held in winter is a highlight, where thousands of handcrafted lanterns illuminate the red-tiled houses, blending the ancient and fantastical aspects of Ryukyu. Through interactions with professional artisans, visitors can gain insight into the historical meanings behind each craft, experiencing the wisdom and cultural depth of Okinawans living in harmony with nature.

Attraction Overview
Located in the "Gala Aoi Umi" area of Yomitan Village, "RYUKYU GLASS WORKS 海風" offers a close-up experience of Okinawa's traditional craftsmanship. The highlight here is the "Sunset at Cape Zanpa" series, where artisans capture the stunning sunset views of Cape Zanpa in glass through their exceptional blowing techniques. Visitors can choose from a variety of colorful and artistic glassware, and even participate in a "glass-blowing experience," creating their own glass cup under the guidance of professional artisans, feeling the spirit of craftsmanship forged at 1300 degrees Celsius.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
The origin of Ryukyu glass dates back to after World War II. Due to resource scarcity, local residents used discarded Coca-Cola and beer bottles from U.S. military bases as raw materials, recycling, melting, and re-blowing them into unique glass products with bubbles and a thick texture. This originally "turning waste into wonder" eco-friendly craft evolved over time, incorporating Okinawa's natural imagery (like the deep blue sea and fiery sunsets), becoming a representative traditional craft of Okinawa. The Umikaze workshop carries on this resilience and aesthetic, modernizing it, with each piece reflecting the depth of Okinawa's history and a tribute to the beauty of nature.

Attraction Introduction
Cape Zanpa Park, located in Yomitan Village in central Okinawa, is famous for its stunning cliffs. The approximately 30-meter-high Ryukyu limestone cliffs stretch about 2 kilometers, contrasting sharply with the deep blue East China Sea. The park's most famous landmark is the 31-meter-tall white "Cape Zanpa Lighthouse," the only lighthouse in Okinawa that visitors can climb to enjoy a panoramic view after ascending 99 spiral steps. The park also features a giant "Zanpa Shisa" standing 8.75 meters tall, the largest Shisa in Okinawa, making it a popular photo spot. Additionally, this location is known for having the latest sunset on the main island of Okinawa, where the golden-orange twilight bathes the cliffs and lighthouse in breathtaking beauty.
Within Cape Zanpa Park stands a statue facing the ocean, "Tai Ki." Tai Ki was an important diplomat and merchant during the 14th century Ryukyu Kingdom, commissioned by King Shō Hashi to trade with China (Ming Dynasty), marking the beginning of the prosperous "Great Trade Era" in Ryukyu. He is revered by locals as the "God of Commerce," symbolizing the pioneering spirit connecting Yomitan Village with the sea.
The area around Cape Zanpa was one of the landing sites for U.S. forces during World War II, giving the lighthouse a deeper significance as a symbol of maritime safety and world peace.

Don't miss the breathtaking "Eisa Taiko Dance" performance, where you can feel the vibrant spirit and passion of the Ryukyu people through the rhythm of drums and sanshin.

Attraction Overview
Located at Maeda Cape in Onna Village, Okinawa, the Blue Cave is one of Okinawa's most iconic natural wonders and a world-renowned spot for diving and snorkeling. This natural sea cave, formed by long-term erosion from seawater, is most magical when sunlight streams through the entrance, reflecting off the clear water onto the white limestone seabed, filling the cave with a dreamlike azure glow. Whether you're a beginner or a professional diver, you can closely observe a rich variety of tropical fish, including the famous parrotfish (Dolly) and colorful coral reefs, experiencing the visual shock of being surrounded by "Okinawa Blue."
Local fishermen once viewed these natural sea caves as safe havens from typhoons and storms, with the calm waters inside providing a secure refuge. As Okinawa's tourism industry grew, this once-quiet fishermen's secret spot was discovered for its unique light and shadow phenomena, transforming it into a core of ecotourism.
To protect this fragile blue wonder, local government and diving associations have established strict environmental regulations, including prohibiting touching corals and limiting daily entry numbers, reflecting the Japanese philosophy of "coexisting with nature." Every visitor not only enjoys the beautiful scenery but also participates in a cultural experience focused on sustainable marine ecology.

Spot Introduction
Maeda Cape is located on the west coast of Okinawa Island in Onna and is one of Okinawa's most iconic natural landscapes. The most famous feature here is the "Blue Cave," hidden beneath the cliffs. Due to the unique topography, sunlight entering the cave refracts through the white sandy seabed, creating a deep and mesmerizing blue glow in the water, often regarded as a must-see sight in a lifetime. In addition to underwater exploration, the observation deck at the cape offers stunning views of Cape Zanpa and Manzamo's magnificent coastline, making it a popular spot for sunset watching.
Maeda Cape is part of the "Okinawa Coastal National Park," featuring typical uplift coral reef topography. This coastline has served as a reference point for fishermen since the ancient Ryukyu period. Following Okinawa's return to Japan in 1972 and subsequent tourism development, Maeda Cape transformed from a quiet fishing village coast into an internationally renowned marine sports destination due to its rich coral reef ecology and high water transparency.
This place embodies Okinawa's spirit of "living in harmony with the sea." The local government collaborates with diving operators to promote coral restoration and environmental protection programs, ensuring that this beautiful blue scenery can be passed down sustainably.

Its most famous feature is the coral reef cliff that resembles an "elephant's trunk," standing tall above the emerald green sea. Visitors can stroll along the gentle paths, enjoying the sea breeze while overlooking the magnificent views of the East China Sea. Especially at sunset, the golden sunlight casts a beautiful glow on the cliffs and the sea, creating a stunning scene. The newly opened visitor center in 2020 offers a comfortable resting area, observation deck, and several shops selling local Okinawan delicacies and souvenirs, giving this classic attraction a fresh appeal.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
The unique name "Manzamo" has deep historical roots. It is said that in 1726, King Shō Kei of the Ryukyu Kingdom, while on a tour to the northern mountains, passed through this area and marveled at the vast fields, exclaiming, "A place where ten thousand people can sit" (with "mo" meaning field in the Okinawan dialect), which is how the name originated. This raised limestone plateau is covered with a plant community designated as a natural monument of Okinawa, containing many rare species that grow only here, holding significant academic and conservation value.
Manzamo has inspired many traditional Okinawan poems known as "Uta Sanshin." During the Ryukyu Kingdom era, it was a venue for traditional events, witnessing centuries of historical changes. Visiting here allows you to not only see the wonders of nature but also to feel the appreciation and love that the Ryukyu kings had for this land.

Nabee Beach, located in the center of Onna Village on Okinawa's west coast, is a beloved public seaside park among locals and tourists alike. It features dazzling white sands and crystal-clear Tiffany blue waters, with relatively calm waves due to its bay location, making it perfect for family outings. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the famous scenic spot Manzamo and partake in various water activities such as banana boat rides, snorkeling, and kayaking. Additionally, there is a well-equipped BBQ area by the beach, allowing travelers to savor local Okinawan ingredients while enjoying the sea breeze and the ultimate island vacation experience.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
The name "Nabee Beach" commemorates the renowned 18th-century Ryukyu dynasty poet Onna Nabee. Born in Onna Village, Nabee was famous for her passionate, emotional, and bold "Ryukyu songs" (a unique form of poetry). In a time of strict feudal society, she expressed her love and connection to the land through her poetry, which continues to be celebrated and adapted into many Okinawan folk songs today.
Near the beach entrance, a monument stands around Manzamo, inscribed with her famous lines written to welcome King Shō Kei of Ryukyu during his visit.
