AKB48 Theater

Overview

The AKB48 Theater is located on the 8th floor of the Don Quijote shopping complex in Akihabara and is dedicated to AKB48. The theater embodies the concept of "idols you can meet," with the stage and audience seating in close proximity. It has 250 seats (including standing spots), with actual seating arrangements depending on the performance.

Two large pillars at the front of the stage are the theater's most distinctive features. Due to the building's structure, the pillars cannot be removed and have become a symbol of the theater, leading to the fan club "Nihonbashi no Kai" (Pillar Club) being named after them. Fans can apply for performances through the official ticket center.

Historical Background

The AKB48 Theater opened on December 8, 2005; initially, the audience numbers were low, but it gradually gained popularity.

This theater culture is related to "idol training." Fans (Wota) repeatedly attend performances, supporting their favorite members ("Oshi") as they grow in singing and dancing. The theater also hosts AKB48 performances and fan events. The pink tape added to the pillars each year marks the theater's anniversaries.

How to Watch Performances

To see a performance, you must first apply for a lottery through the official ticket center; if selected, you can purchase tickets based on the performance announcement. Ticket prices, entry times, allowed items, and seating arrangements should be confirmed via the official website and the performance's Q&A. Recording audio or video inside the theater is prohibited.

Akihabara UDX

Akihabara UDX is located near the Electric Town exit of JR Akihabara Station and is part of the "Akihabara Crossfield" urban regeneration project. The design of UDX facilitates the exchange of business, academia, and industry, serving as a hub for IT-related facilities. Visitors often explore "AKIBA_ICHI," which features a variety of restaurants and shops, as well as "Akiba Square," where anime, gaming, and technology events are held. On weekends, you might see Itasha (decorated cars).

The Akihabara UDX building is mainly divided into office and public areas. The floors open to general visitors are as follows:

• B1F～B3F (UDX PARKING): Offers about 800 parking spaces.
• 1F～3F (AKIBA_ICHI): AKIBA_ICHI gathers around 30 restaurants and shops, including Japanese, Chinese, international cuisine, and cafes.
• 2F (Akiba Square): An event space for exhibitions, presentations, and fan meet-ups.
• 4F (UDX GALLERY / UDX THEATER): Features a gallery and advanced cinema for small exhibitions, seminars, or screenings.
• 5F～22F: Mainly office floors and conference center.

Historical Background

Akihabara UDX was completed and opened in March 2006. The land it occupies was previously the Kanda Seika Market (1928 to 1989) and later the Akihabara Freight Station. In the early 2000s, the Japanese government promoted the "Akihabara Crossfield" urban regeneration project to redevelop the area, allowing Akihabara to accommodate IT technology and cultural activities in addition to its electronics district. Akihabara UDX, along with the nearby "Akihabara DAIBIRU," forms the commercial and event space of this area.
