Sukiyaki at Tokyo Station: Moritaya Tokyo Marunouchi
Wagyu Restaurant on the 35th Floor near Tokyo Station
The Moritaya brand was founded in 1869 in Kyoto and boasts over 150 years of history. Located on the 35th floor of the Marunouchi Building, Moritaya Tokyo Marunouchi offers a variety of Japanese dishes including sukiyaki and shabu-shabu. This branch allows travelers to enjoy the Kyoto-born brand’s wagyu beef near Tokyo Station. The restaurant overlooks the Imperial Palace grounds, and on clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji.
If you wish to request a window-side seat, please inquire about availability and fees when making your reservation; the view varies depending on weather and specific seating location. The restaurant offers both table seating and private rooms to suit your party size.
Sitting here, the staff will bring a heated cast-iron pot to the table, first greasing the bottom of the pot with a layer of beef fat, then sprinkling it with coarse sugar that has distinct grains. Only when the sugar slightly melts and emits a caramelized aroma will they lay the beautifully sliced Kuroge Wagyu beef on top, allowing the meat slices to slowly brown in the pot. This is the Kyoto-style (Kansai-style) sukiyaki method, which differs from the Kanto-style commonly seen in Tokyo where everything is simmered together in the pot. The restaurant is a Tokyo branch of the long-established meat wholesaler “Moritaya,” founded in the second year of Meiji (1869) in Kyoto, and was selected for the Tabelog Sukiyaki/Shabu-shabu Hyakumeiten 2024, with a rating between approximately 3.59 and 3.60.
The restaurant uses carefully selected Kuroge Wagyu beef with uniform marbling and sweet-tasting fat that melts in your mouth. The staff sears the meat until the edges are slightly charred before drizzling it with their signature soy-based sauce, which has a distinct sweetness, coating the meat rather than boiling it in broth. The first bite highlights the natural flavor of the beef and the caramelized sugar, followed by a dip in raw egg for a silky texture. Afterward, they gradually add Kujo leeks, tofu, and vegetables to absorb the remaining meat juices. Many diners find this method of enjoying the meat first, followed by the vegetables, to be a memorable signature of the restaurant.
Courses typically begin with seasonal appetizers, followed by the sukiyaki, rice, red miso soup, pickles, and dessert. The rice is Kyoto-grown Koshihikari, which is perfectly cooked and pairs beautifully with the richness of the sukiyaki. In addition to sukiyaki, the restaurant serves shabu-shabu, oil-yaki, and steak, though the Kyoto-style sukiyaki remains the signature. Because of the table-side service, the staff adjusts the heat to ensure the meat is never overcooked and the fat retains its quality.
Menu and Pricing
The menu features sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, oil-yaki, seared beef (yaki-shabu), and steak. Lunch sets start from 3630 yen, including options like beef stew and cold shabu-shabu, while the Kyo-Kago Gozen is 4510 yen. The weekday-only Wagyu Pot and Steak Bowl are both 3300 yen. Dinner sukiyaki courses range from 9900 yen to 19800 yen, depending on the meat selection and portion size. All courses (including lunch) are subject to a 10% service charge. For example, a 9900 yen course incurs a 990 yen service charge, totaling 10890 yen; drinks and seat reservation fees are additional.
Additionally, there are extra fees for reserving window-side seating: 2200 yen per table for a window-side four-person table, 5500 yen for a window-side ten-person tatami area, and 11000 yen for a twenty-person tatami private room; these are per-table or per-area fees. Please note that children under 10 are not admitted, so please plan your trip accordingly.
Access and Reservation Information
Moritaya Tokyo Marunouchi is very conveniently located, just a 3-minute walk from the Marunouchi South Exit of Tokyo Station, or 3 minutes from Nijubashimae Station on the Chiyoda Line. The restaurant is open for lunch from 11:00 to 15:00 and dinner from 17:00 to 23:00, Monday through Friday. Weekend hours differ slightly, so we recommend checking in advance.
Reservations can be made via the official website’s designated AutoReserve link or by phone; live seafood and wagyu courses require reservations during lunch. The restaurant accepts cash, various credit cards, and multiple electronic payment methods. Last entry times for lunch and dinner vary between weekdays and weekends; please refer to the store information below for details.
Sitting by the window, watching the meat transform from pink to a deep, charred-edge brown before dipping it in egg, is the quintessential experience here. This Kyoto meat wholesaler brings a century of tradition to a high-rise in Tokyo, allowing guests to enjoy a slow, deliberate sukiyaki meal in the heart of the city.
