Kasumi Kitayoshi Ohatsutenjin: Fresh Live Crabs and Seafood Directly from Kasumi in Osaka Umeda
About a three-minute walk from Osaka Higashi Umeda Station, you can find ‘Kasumi Kitayoshi Ohatsutenjin’ by entering a small alley near the Ohatsutenjin shopping street. This restaurant brings fresh live crabs and seafood directly from Kasumi Port in Hyogo Prefecture to Osaka Higashi Umeda. It is backed by Kitayu Shoten, established in the twelfth year of the Meiji era, a brokerage and seafood processing company with over one hundred forty years of history. The president personally selects live crabs and fish from Kasumi Port, processes them in-house, and delivers them to the restaurant, ensuring that the crabs, whether raw or cooked, retain the firmness and sweetness of freshly caught seafood. The restaurant features a counter, table seating, and sunken seating, as well as private rooms suitable for group dining.
The live crabs in the tank are the stars here. Depending on the season, they offer red snow crabs, Matsuba crabs, and golden crabs, with set menus available for half or whole crabs, allowing you to enjoy raw seafood, grilled crabs on a hot plate, crab hot pot, and crab rice porridge. If you want to arrange a crab cuisine gathering, you can first learn about the types, quantities, and prices of crabs, then choose a suitable plan for the number of people.
What impresses the most is the live Matsuba crab or the seasonally limited Kasumi crab. A single crab is divided into raw seafood, grilled on a hot plate, hot pot, and finally crab rice porridge, each preparation showcasing different flavors of the crab. The raw crab served first has a transparent, delicate texture with a sweet ocean flavor; it is elastic yet not tough, with many describing it as ‘sweet enough to almost not taste like crab.’ The crab innards is handled very delicately, rich yet not fishy, and can be spread directly on the crab meat or paired with sea urchin and fish roe, instantly enriching the layers of flavor. Next comes the grilled crab legs and body on a hot plate, where the charcoal and high temperature bring out the aroma from the shell, and the meat remains juicy, perfectly complemented by their homemade crab vinegar or yuzu vinegar, balancing the richness with a sweet and sour taste.
The hot pot is the climax of the meal. The broth is based on crab and bonito, clear yet surprisingly delicious. The crab legs and body are gently dipped in the broth, becoming softer and sweeter, while the vegetables and tofu absorb the crab’s freshness. By the end, the broth has concentrated into essence, poured over rice to make crab rice porridge, sprinkled with the female snow crab innards, where the rich crab flavor melds with the rice, making it hard to put down the chopsticks. The entire meal progresses from the light raw seafood to the rich rice porridge, with a clear rhythm, reminding you with every bite: this is not frozen crab or pre-processed meat, but crabs that were still alive that day.
Besides crab, the restaurant offers fresh fish according to the day’s supply. Blackthroat seaperch is lightly seared on the skin side, its fat melting in the mouth; seasonal dried fish is traditionally salted and grilled until crisp, making it a good accompaniment to sake or rice. Local Kasumi Tsuru sake ranges from refreshing to rich and complements the crab’s sweetness. The restaurant is quiet, with tables, sunken seating and private rooms.
If you want to enjoy a meal of clearly sourced and neatly prepared crab dishes in Osaka, Kasumi Kitayoshi Ohatsutenjin brings the fresh delicacies from Hyogo Port directly to the night in Umeda. From translucent raw crab, fragrant grilled dishes, to the final bowl of rich crab porridge, each dish tells you that the crab here is truly fresh from the water. Sitting down and slowly enjoying the full set of crab dishes is the most direct and satisfying charm of this restaurant.
