A Must-Try Exclusive Flavor - "Takeo-don," a Hidden Delicacy in Yufuin!
The biggest feature of this rice bowl is its rich variety of toppings. The rice is typically topped with about nine ingredients, including grilled beef, kelp-cured Yamame (masu salmon), green onions, bean sprouts, kimchi, meat, and sashimi, all garnished with vibrant shredded egg crepe. Finally, it is drizzled with Japanese dashi soy sauce or a similar sauce, and the shop recommends mixing it thoroughly before eating. Once mixed, the fat from the meat, the umami of the fish, the pungency of the green onions, and the sweetness of the sauce blend together, creating a multi-layered texture that never feels cluttered. It is a bowl that is “abundant in ingredients yet smooth to eat.” Served with a bowl of miso soup, the overall portion is moderate, making it suitable for a lunch or dinner when you want a satisfying meal without feeling too heavy.
In addition to the rice bowl, the salt-grilled Yamame is also very popular. The shop is particular about its Yamame sourcing, which is said to be raised in spring water, resulting in sweet, tender meat with little muddy flavor; the liver and skin are especially delicious when salt-grilled. The grilled local chicken has a distinct texture and rich aroma, making it perfect as a snack or to accompany drinks. Wild vegetable tempura is also a frequent option, featuring seasonal mountain vegetables fried until crispy and fragrant. The overall cuisine leans toward creative dishes based on local ingredients. Unlike large tourist-oriented restaurants with fixed set menus, they prepare whatever is available that day, and the owner’s knife skills while preparing ingredients right in front of customers are often praised.
The interior space is small, with about twelve seats, featuring a folk-art style with an irori-style counter and tatami seating. The feeling of taking off your shoes to be seated is reminiscent of a more traditional small shop; the atmosphere is quiet and is often described as a place where there are few tourists and locals come to visit. When the main street of Yufuin is too crowded, this place offers a chance to catch your breath and eat slowly while listening to the sound of flowing water. Most people who have eaten the Takeo-don remember the rich flavor after mixing the bowl, as well as the relatively calm dining pace here.
When you want to eat a bowl of rice with character in Yufuin without being surrounded by tourist crowds, the Takeo-don at たけお is a choice worth including. It is not a fancy kaiseki meal, nor is it a popular tourist set meal, but a local rice bowl that mixes meat, fish, green onions, and sauce well to make you feel satisfied. Sitting by the irori, watching the owner prepare the ingredients before serving them, and having a sip of hot soup is the most direct charm of this place.
