Jiyugaoka Yoshoku: L’Atelier+

L’Atelier+ is located near Jiyugaoka Station, just a two-minute walk away, and is a restaurant that earned the Yoshoku Hyakumeiten award in 2023 and the Yoshoku EAST Hyakumeiten award in 2025. Today, we are visiting this gourmet palace famous for its exquisite classic Western-style cuisine.

Run by a husband-and-wife team, the restaurant is tucked away down a flight of stairs. Inside, you’ll find a mature, elegant atmosphere—a quiet space perfect for enjoying a meal while engaging in easy conversation. The staff are always welcoming, with smiles and a meticulous attention to every guest’s needs.

The wooden tones and minimalist furniture capture the light perfectly, free from unnecessary clutter. A consistent selection for the Tabelog Yoshoku Hyakumeiten with a rating of approximately 3.67 and hundreds of reviews, many patrons have been visiting since its days as ‘Kitchen Plus.’

We visited during a holiday lunch and opted for the generous B Course, which includes an appetizer, soup, main dish, rice or bread, dessert, and after-meal coffee. Naturally, we also ordered a few à la carte favorites: the Niçoise salad and the fried shrimp.

The appetizer arrived first, featuring a pâté, smoked salmon, crostini, and salad. The pâté was light and refreshing, paired perfectly with mustard. Next came the vibrant Niçoise salad; the fresh vegetables and rich variety of ingredients created a wonderful depth of flavor, tied together by a perfectly balanced dressing.

The most anticipated main dish is the hamburger steak, which comes with a choice of two sauces: the classic demi-glace or the Japanese-style teriyaki with grated daikon. I personally prefer the demi-glace, where the thick hamburger steak is drizzled with their exclusively prepared demi-glace.

The meat texture is soft yet chewy; when cut, the meat juice flows out slowly, and the onion is integrated into the meat, resulting in no dryness. The consistency of the demi-glace is just right, with sweet and sour flavors intertwined with the meat aroma, without overpowering the original beef taste. The Japanese-style version is more refreshing, as the mild spice of the grated daikon and the salty-sweet teriyaki perfectly balance the fat. Many repeat guests specifically recommend this combination.

The hamburger steak with white rice is a match made in heaven. The fried shrimp is also a crowd favorite, featuring succulent, tender shrimp paired with homemade tartar sauce—a truly delicious combination.

Another frequently mentioned dish is the crab cream croquette. The outer crust is fried until crispy, and the crab and cream filling inside is rich, holding its shape when bitten. Paired with salsa and tartar sauce, the sweet-sour and creamy flavors combine, providing a multi-layered experience in every bite. The shrimp cutlet is also fried with great care; the shell is golden, the shrimp meat is firm, and the sauce does not overshadow it. If you order the beef stew, it is the result of being slow reduced—the meat chunks are tender and flavorful, and the sauce is rich but not greasy, which especially suits rice.

For dessert, we enjoyed a French crème brûlée that was sweet but never cloying, with a perfectly caramelized sugar crust atop a smooth custard—the ideal finish to the meal.

Rice or baguette, soup, and side dishes are included in the set. The rice is cooked to individual grain perfection, the soup is consistently good, and while the sides are simple, they elevate the main course. Some describe the yoshoku here as having a ‘depth that can’t be replicated at home’—not because of expensive ingredients, but because of the care put into the heat control and the sauces. Lunch prices are relatively accessible for a full set, while dinner offers both à la carte and course options. The appetizer platter is a great way to sample multiple textures, perfect for those who want to savor their meal slowly.

The experience at L’Atelier+ goes beyond the food; the atmosphere is quiet and the service is efficient. The couple works in perfect harmony, maintaining a steady pace so you never feel rushed. There are many yoshoku spots in Jiyugaoka, but few can craft a demi-glace with such layers or a hamburger steak that is both this tender and juicy. For those looking for a serious, unpretentious yoshoku meal in Tokyo, L’Atelier+ is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.
