【A Long-Standing Café in Jiyugaoka for Over 40 Years: 'Enseigne d’angle'】
In Jiyugaoka, there is a café that has been in operation for over 40 years, named 「Enseigne d’angle」【Corner Sign】, where the atmosphere is distinctly different from self-service chains like Starbucks or Excelsior, resembling a place where one can leisurely enjoy coffee. The café offers a variety of coffee options, allowing customers to choose their preferred beans and create their own coffee experience.
The interior decor features a Belle Époque Parisian style, including lighting by Émile Gallé and furniture by Louis Majorelle. Classical music flows gently in the background, and large roses adorn the tables. The ambiance feels like dining in a classic European hotel restaurant. In this space, isolated from the outside world, savoring a delicious coffee poured into exquisite cups seems to evoke a sense of inner peace.
‘Enseigne d’angle’ opened in 1975 (Shōwa 50) in Harajuku. Founder Yoshikuni Hayashi worked in 30 cafés before starting this shop at the age of 26, bringing a new wave of refined space and interior design to the coffee shop scene at that time.
In recent years, the number of chain coffee shops and self-service cafés has increased, but this place has chosen not to expand its menu or change its methods, focusing instead on deep-roasted coffee brewed with a Nel drip (flannel filter) and two food items that have been on the menu since its inception.
One belief he mentioned is, ‘To maintain service quality, we do not increase menu items.’ Since its founding in 1975 year, the menu has only included the homemade ‘Cheesecake’ and ‘French Ham and Cheese Sandwich.’ Although the choices are limited, these dishes have been beloved for many years.
【Cheesecake】
This cake was inspired by a cheesecake made by an elderly European couple that Mr. Hayashi encountered in his early years, and it was developed through repeated experimentation based on his memory of its flavor. It is a soufflé-style cheesecake with moderate sweetness and a smooth batter. Using ingredients like Calpis butter, which is favored even by chefs at high-end restaurants, it showcases his commitment to detail.
【French Ham and Cheese Sandwich】
This is a creative dish by Mr. Hayashi. ‘I wanted to create something more culinary than a typical French ham and cheese sandwich,’ he said, leading him to develop this unique item. The bread is generously spread with a white onion sauce inside and out, filled with cheddar cheese and ham, and finally topped with grated Parmesan before baking. The richness from the white sauce complements the caramelized crispy surface, while the robust cheddar, creamy white sauce, and delicious ham blend perfectly, offering a rich flavor. The bread is also very soft, making it undoubtedly one of their signature dishes, perfectly paired with coffee.
The coffee here is primarily deep-roasted, with the signature blend (French coffee) featuring a strong bitterness and full-bodied flavor, while the acidity is relatively mild, leaving a lingering aftertaste in the mouth. Although the cups are on the smaller side, the intense flavor makes it just right to sip slowly. The café also offers a variety of single-origin coffee beans, along with the special coffee known as ‘Queen of Amber.’
【Queen of Amber】
This is the café’s signature coffee, served in beautifully designed Lalique glass cups. True to its name, it is a drink full of taste. The deep-roasted bitterness and richness are quite strong, and the subtle sweetness harmonizes beautifully with the fresh cream. The contrast of white and black is very appealing, making it a drink that lifts one’s spirits.
Additionally, there are options like café au lait, Vienna coffee, and cream coffee, all maintaining a rich flavor profile.
【Enseigne d’angle】. Although its location is not very conspicuous, this café has already made a name for itself.
Here, sitting and watching the occasional tram pass by outside while sipping a warm cup of coffee and cutting a small piece of homemade cheesecake is the truest essence of this café. It is not a trendy coffee shop but a place that has adhered to the Nel drip method and two food items for over thirty-five years.
