【Jiyugaoka】The Refreshing Spice of Curry Super Star

In a corner of Jiyugaoka, Tokyo, you will find the spice curry specialty shop 「カレー★スーパースター」. This restaurant is famous not only for its unique curry recipes but also as a synonym for local gourmet food, thanks to the passion and deep understanding of spices held by the owner, Mr. Hideyuki Watanabe. Mr. Watanabe’s extensive experience in the overseas restaurant industry has given him a unique perspective on ingredient selection and flavor pairing; this passion and persistence have finally blossomed in Jiyugaoka. The shop is small with limited seating, yet many people are willing to go out of their way to eat here because of the curry, which uses no flour and achieves its thickness naturally from domestic vegetables and fruits.

The shop is located along Gakuen-dori, right across from the Tokyu Bus “Jiyugaoka-eki Iriguchi” stop. Because it has been widely featured in local Japanese travel and gourmet magazines such as POPEYE, Otona no Shumatsu, Hanako, and dancyu, you can always see diners waiting in line during meal times. This is not only because the curry here is incredibly delicious, but also because every dish embodies the owner’s persistence and passion for food.

The menu is very simple, with only three basic flavors, plus a Double Curry option where you can choose two. The most recommended is the Original Chicken Curry; it has a higher level of spiciness, but it is not just simple heat—it is the kind where the layers of spices unfold slowly. The owner personally blends over twenty spices, including cumin, cardamom, curry leaves, coriander, and garam masala, and cooks them with Daisen chicken. The chicken is tender and juicy, and the broth carries the sweet and sour notes of tomatoes and the refreshing scent of fruits. You won’t feel heavy after eating it; instead, you’ll want to keep eating more. The spiciness is progressive; it feels refreshing at the first bite, and only after a while does it slowly heat up on the tip of the tongue and throat, without being overwhelming.

Another option is the Surakichi Curry, which has a relatively mild taste with coconut milk and a subtle seafood flavor, forming a nice contrast with the Original Chicken Curry. There is also the Keema Curry (chicken mince), based on domestic onions, with the scent of Japanese pepper and cloves in the spices; the spiciness is moderate, but it has a full-bodied aroma. First-time visitors usually order the Double Curry, placing two flavors side-by-side on the same plate to compare while eating, often finding that the one they thought they wouldn’t like ends up being the most satisfying.

The side dishes are simple, consisting only of a small dish of pickled cabbage and yogurt. The acidity and crunch of the cabbage can neutralize the stimulation of the spices, while the yogurt makes the overall experience smoother. The rice is cooked to individual grains, allowing it to fully absorb the aroma of the curry. Many say that the curry here does not feel as heavy as typical store-bought curry, but is instead refreshing, direct in its aroma, and leaves no burden after eating, which is why people want to visit again.

The interior space is small, with a counter and a few tables, creating a quiet and focused atmosphere. The owner is mostly focused on cooking, while the other staff member greets guests kindly, forming a home-style rhythm. The scent of spices slowly diffuses in the space, and you will soon be surrounded by that aroma after sitting down. Shortly after ordering, the piping hot curry is served; the colors on the plate are deep and glossy, with the aroma arriving before the taste.

Tabelog rating is about 3.59, with over three hundred reviews, praising the balance of spices, the quality of the chicken, and the refreshing feeling after eating. It is one of the few shops in Jiyugaoka that makes people “come specifically for the curry”; the taste is addictive, and you want to eat it again after one try. The price is between one thousand two hundred and one thousand five hundred yen, which is in the range where you can easily walk in but still have a serious meal.

In a neighborhood like Jiyugaoka, full of desserts and light meals, this small shop centered on spices offers a different kind of satisfaction. It does not rely on fancy plating or complex side dishes, but presents the flavors of spices, chicken, and vegetables and fruits in the most direct way. Sit down, scoop up a spoonful of aromatic curry and rice, and that refreshing yet multi-layered spicy fragrance is often more memorable than you might imagine.

The most popular curry in the shop, featuring specially selected Daisen chicken, paired with the rich taste of onions, tomatoes, and fruit sauce, plus toasted fragrant cumin seeds, cardamom seeds, curry leaves, the freshness of green chilies and coriander, and a rich blend of Indian spices. This “deliciously spicy and sour” curry will stimulate your appetite.

Keema Curry

キーマカレー

This curry is based on an onion and tomato sauce stimulated by the subtle bitterness of cloves, the freshness of coriander seeds and Japanese pepper, and the spiciness of black pepper and mustard seeds, containing domestic free-range chicken rich in umami. Although the spiciness is relatively mild, it gradually releases a numbing and spicy sensation.
