Nago, northern Okinawa: family spots first
This time we visit Nago in northern Okinawa. In addition to the highlight Ocean Expo Park (Churaumi Aquarium is located within Ocean Expo Park), Nago is also the best place for family trips, with Okinawa’s amusement parks and botanical gardens concentrated here.

Overview
Nago Pineapple Park:
Transforming an orchard into a pineapple-themed amusement park! The park features about 120 types of pineapples, and you can ride the pineapple tram through a tropical jungle. There’s also an eye-catching dinosaur area that kids will love! Enjoy unlimited tastings of pineapple and rich pineapple ice cream.
Okinawa Fruit Land
Located right next to Pineapple Park, these two are usually visited on the same day. The entire area resembles a large escape room, where kids use sensors and maps to find the kidnapped king, making it very engaging. There’s also a tropical fruit area and a cute animal zone, with colorful parrots being the most popular, allowing for direct feeding. It’s a perfect spot to visit on a rainy day.
Nago Natural Animal and Plant Park
This park takes advantage of Okinawa’s unique climate, featuring animals and plants from Oceania, Africa, and the Amazon. The most special aspect is the absence of cages; birds fly above your head, and you might even have one come to your feet asking for snacks, which can be quite surprising at first.
Sesoko Island
A small island with a circumference of only 8 kilometers, but the sea is unbelievably beautiful, with white sand and Tiffany blue waters—no editing needed for photos. The most popular spot is Sesoko Beach, located next to the Hilton, perfect for snorkeling, banana boat rides, and watching the sunset; a whole afternoon can easily be spent here.
Okinawa Ocean Expo Park
I’ve been there three times, and it’s always worth it. This national park was established to commemorate the International Ocean Expo in 1975 and is quite expansive, taking time to explore. Besides the well-known Churaumi Aquarium, there are dolphin shows, a turtle museum, a tropical dream center, and a charming Okinawan village. Plan for about 3 to 6 hours to fully enjoy.

Attraction Overview
When in Okinawa, you can't miss Orion! This is a given for many adults.
Orion Happy Park in Nago is technically a factory, but it feels nothing like one. The tour shows how beer transforms from raw materials to that cold can, with crushing, fermentation, and canning happening in a lively assembly line. It's mesmerizing to watch hundreds of cans roll by every minute.
But honestly, everyone is waiting for the final part: the tasting. Each person gets two free cups of fresh draft beer, straight from the factory, with fine bubbles and incredible freshness. Sitting down with beer snacks, the heat of Okinawa seems to vanish. If you don’t drink, you can swap for non-alcoholic beverages, no worries.
If you love a good drink like I do, this place is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
The birth of Orion beer is closely tied to Okinawa's post-war recovery. In 1957, founder Seiji Gushiken established a brewery on this island to boost local industry and achieve economic independence during a time of severe shortages. The name "Orion" comes from one of the most iconic constellations in the southern sky, with its three bright stars echoing the three-star insignia of the highest commander of the U.S. forces in Okinawa at the time, symbolizing the people's deep hopes for peace and the future.
The interior recreates the appearance of a traditional Okinawan grocery store from the 1960s, "Machiyagua." The retro decor and yellowed old photos quietly tell the story of how this beer evolved from a small local factory into a shared cultural memory for the people of Okinawa.

Attraction Overview
Nago Pineapple Park is one of the most iconic theme parks in northern Okinawa. Once inside, you can ride the cute automated "Pineapple Car" through pineapple fields and lush tropical plants. The park features over a hundred varieties of pineapples and an aerial walkway for a bird's-eye view of the tropical forest. The newly opened "Pineapple SL Train" area is also a favorite photo spot for families. When you get tired, stop by for fresh-cut pineapple, pineapple soft serve, or pick up some locally sourced pineapple products to take home.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
The story of Nago Pineapple Park begins with the heyday of the Okinawa pineapple industry. Pineapples arrived in Ishigaki Island in 1866 via a Dutch ship, taking root and being extensively cultivated in the warm, slightly acidic soil of Nago, eventually becoming an important local industry. As imports opened up, the industry shifted towards tourism, and this park was born in that context, continuing to preserve Okinawa's tropical agricultural culture. The park's pineapple distillery is Japan's first factory to brew alcohol from pineapples, making it a worthwhile visit.

Over time, it evolved from a botanical garden into an educational and entertaining experience. The core theme, "Tropical Kingdom," combines Okinawa's natural ecology with a fantastical story, hoping to help children learn about plant diversity and environmental protection through adventure.
The park features over 30 types of tropical fruit trees, including jackfruit, starfruit, and cacao, deeply rooted in Okinawa's agriculture, cuisine, and festive culture. Restaurant Features
"Umi to Mugi to" is located along the national road in Motobu, about a 12-minute drive from the famous Churaumi Aquarium. The unique aspect of this restaurant is that the owner was once a French cuisine chef, who has infused the delicate spirit of French cooking into traditional Okinawan dishes. The interior is bright, clean, and modern, exuding a refined atmosphere akin to a boutique café compared to traditional soba shops.
The soul of this place lies in its meticulously crafted broth and homemade noodles. The broth is made from high-quality bonito flakes from Makurazaki, small dried fish from Kagawa's Ibukijima, and natural kelp from Hokkaido, simmered slowly to present a clear and deeply layered sweet flavor. The signature "Umi Mugi Soba" features chewy homemade flat noodles that are thick and absorb the broth well. Another must-try highlight is the "Katsuobushi Rice," where staff shave fresh bonito slices right in front of customers, served generously with an enticing aroma, perfectly paired with the soba broth.
As this restaurant is a highly popular "queue-worthy" spot with limited daily preparation of noodles and broth, it is recommended to arrive half an hour before opening to register. The restaurant only accepts cash and does not offer online reservations. If you're looking for a bowl of "new-style Okinawan soba" that transcends traditional definitions, with an elegant and pure taste on your way to the aquarium, this is definitely your top choice.

Mapcode: 206 825 434*62
Distance from Kokusai Street: About 90 km (1:30–2:00 by car via Okinawa Expressway)
Attraction Overview
Sesoko Bridge is a magnificent structure spanning 762 meters, connecting Motobu on Okinawa Island with the mysterious Sesoko Island. As you drive across this elegantly arched bridge, the emerald green and deep blue sea unfolds on both sides, with such clarity that you can even see coral reefs beneath the water on sunny days. This spot is not only famous for scenic drives but also features Anchi Beach below, a beloved retreat for locals and visitors alike. Whether greeting the first light of dawn over the sea or watching the sunset over Ie Island and Minna Island in the evening, Sesoko Bridge showcases the ultimate natural beauty of northern Okinawa.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
Completed in February 1985, Sesoko Bridge plays a crucial role in Okinawa's "Islands Revitalization Plan." Before the bridge opened, residents of Sesoko Island relied entirely on ferries to travel to the main island, with their supplies and medical resources limited by weather and ferry schedules. The bridge's construction not only ended the "island within an island" lifestyle but also transformed the local socio-economic structure, turning Sesoko Island from a simple agricultural and fishing community into an important tourist landmark in northern Okinawa.

Attraction Overview
Located in the northern part of Okinawa, Sesoko Island is an easily accessible hidden gem just across the Sesoko Bridge. The island is renowned for Sesoko Beach, acclaimed for having the "highest transparency in Okinawa." The stunning 800-meter stretch of white sand and gradient Tiffany blue waters creates a breathtaking scene. This spot is not only a paradise for snorkeling enthusiasts, where schools of tropical fish swim among the coral reefs, but also a perfect place to relax and listen to the sound of the waves. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with pristine sea views, has attracted many stylish cafes and resorts in recent years, making this small island a blend of natural beauty and modern comfort.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
Sesoko Island was an important observation point for maritime trade during the Ryukyu Kingdom. Before the opening of the 762-meter long "Sesoko Bridge" in 1985, islanders relied on ferries for travel to the main island, a period that inadvertently preserved the island's precious primeval forests and traditional village landscapes. Many houses on the island still feature unique Okinawan windbreak trees and red-tiled roofs, allowing visitors to feel the rich rhythm of Ryukyu life.
"Sesoko" in Japanese means shallow beach, reflecting its geographical features. The spiritual core of the island is "Sesoko Utaki," a sacred place where locals pray for bountiful harvests and safe voyages. During specific festivals, islanders still perform rituals following ancient customs, embodying the cultural essence of coexistence between humans, nature, and deities.

Located next to the famous Churaumi Aquarium, Okinawa Traditional Village is an open-air museum that perfectly recreates the village landscape of the Ryukyu Kingdom from the 17th to 19th centuries. Unlike modern buildings, you will find traditional red-tiled roofs, windbreaks made of Ficus trees, and stone lions guarding the homes. Visitors can freely wander through various traditional structures and experience the rhythm of life in historical Okinawa.
The village aims to preserve and pass on the unique architectural culture and wisdom of life in the Ryukyu Islands. The park features restored and reconstructed buildings based on historical documents and archaeological research, including the "Jitōda House" (official residence), "General House," and the sacred space "Utaki" designed for rituals. These structures showcase the wooden craftsmanship of the time, reflecting how the Ryukyu people adapted to the island's climate to create ventilated, earthquake-resistant homes capable of withstanding typhoons.
During specific times, traditional-clad grandmothers offer authentic Okinawan brown sugar snacks and play the sanshin, engaging warmly with visitors. Additionally, the on-site "Omoro Botanical Garden" cultivates various plants mentioned in the oldest collection of Ryukyu songs, "Omoro Sōshi," allowing travelers to connect deeply with Okinawa's literary and natural heritage through visual and auditory experiences.

This net facility is primarily designed for children aged 3 to 12, with a cushioned ground for safety. Spot Introduction
Located in northern Okinawa near Churaumi Aquarium, "Namiki Rental Cycle" is the most popular starting point for exploring the famous "Bise Fukugi Tree Road." This rental shop is situated at the entrance of the tree road, offering a variety of bike options, including lady's bikes, tandem bikes, and children's bicycles. Riding through this approximately one-kilometer green tunnel, the refreshing sea breeze and shade create a rare tranquil experience in Okinawa travel. Cycling through the dappled light of the lush Fukugi leaves, the endpoint is the stunning Bise Beach, making this route one of the most healing cycling paths in Okinawa.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
The Fukugi Tree Road in the Bise area has a history of over 300 years. During the Ryukyu Kingdom era, local residents planted numerous Fukugi trees around their homes to shield against strong typhoons and sea winds, creating a "windbreak forest." This slow-growing, hard-wooded tree with dense foliage forms a natural wall resembling a maze.
The Bise village where "Namiki Rental Cycle" is located still retains the original Ryukyu village appearance, with red-tiled roofs and ancient stone walls visible. This "windbreak forest village" landscape has become increasingly rare in Okinawa, thus being designated as an important cultural landscape. Through leisurely cycling, travelers can experience the historical context of Okinawa's coexistence with nature and the aesthetics of simple living.

Distance from Naha International Street: Approximately 95 km. Driving from Naha city via the Okinawa Expressway takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours.
Spot Introduction
Located in northern Okinawa, Bise Fukugi Tree Road is a green tunnel that feels like time has stood still. Close to the famous Churaumi Aquarium, it offers a completely different tranquil atmosphere. Thousands of Fukugi trees, some over 300 years old, are neatly lined up, forming a natural green wall that shields from the sun and sea breeze. Strolling along the white sandy path, you can hear the distant sound of waves and cicadas, naturally slowing your pace. Visitors can choose to rent bicycles to navigate through the forest or experience a traditional water buffalo cart ride, embracing the pure slow life of Okinawa.
Historical Background and Cultural Significance
The Fukugi forest in Bise is not just for aesthetics; it embodies the survival wisdom of ancestors. Fukugi means "tree of happiness" in Japanese, and due to its strong trunk and dense leaves, locals have been planting it along the coastline since the Ryukyu Kingdom era as a windbreak against typhoons and salt damage, while also protecting traditional red-tiled houses. This "coexistence of homes and forests" is rare in other parts of Okinawa, making Bise's well-preserved village appearance particularly precious.
Fukugi is regarded as a tree that brings happiness. At the end of the tree road, where it meets the sea, passing through the lush greenery reveals the iconic silhouette of Ie Island, creating an unparalleled feeling of unity with nature.
