After hours in the air you finally land at Naha Airport — and the first stop is still a blank. Southern Okinawa is only a 15–40 minute drive away, with a few places that catch people off guard: cliff-top coastline, a World Heritage site you walk straight into, and a sunset island where planes skim overhead.
This is one of the parts of the island with the fewest tour-bus crowds and the most surprises per hour. You don’t detour from Naha, so it fits the first day after you land or the last few hours before your flight without burning the clock on transfers.
This guide collects the southern Okinawa stops worth the time, with suggested stay lengths, Mapcodes, ticket prices and small cautions, so a short window still goes somewhere.
Okinawa South Must-Visit Spots Quick Notes
■ Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace: Get off the plane and go! Okinawa’s most beautiful check-in island – Senaga Island
If your flight lands in the evening, heading straight to Senaga Island from the airport is the most accurate choice. Umikaji Terrace, a white Mediterranean-style shopping mall, is built on the hillside, with layered staircases and azure sea views. It looks like a Greek Santorini when you take a photo. What’s more special is that, because it’s adjacent to the airport runway, you can sit on the patio and drink coffee, and occasionally, planes will fly low over your head – this view can’t be found in Okinawa. In the evening, the sun sets slowly over the sea, and the entire island is dyed golden orange. Even if you don’t buy anything, just standing here is worth the ticket price.
■ Sefa-utaki: Enter the sacred precinct of the Ryukyu Kingdom – World Heritage Sefa-utaki
Sefa-utaki is the highest level of sacred site in the Ryukyu Kingdom era, and the most unmissable World Heritage site in Okinawa South. Stepping into the limestone temple in the forest, the air becomes quiet, and two giant triangular rocks intersect to form a natural arch, with light passing through the gaps, making you hold your breath. As you walk deeper, you can also gaze at the Kuhama Island, which is considered a sacred island. This is not a typical tourist spot – it’s a truly sacred place where locals come to worship, please walk quietly and feel the tranquility that has lasted for hundreds of years.
Chinmienmihama Park stands on the tip of the cape protruding into the East China Sea, almost surrounded by the sea on three sides. When the weather is clear, the blue tropical sea water, the floating Kuhama Island in the distance, and the gentle sea breeze fill your senses. There is no admission fee, no crowd control, and the parking lot is nearby, making it an ideal place to arrange a mid-point for visiting Sefa-utaki before and after. It’s also a popular spot for watching the ‘first sunrise’ on New Year’s Day.
■ Gyokusendo・Okinawa World Culture Park: A shocking experience in the underground world – Gyokusendo Limestone Cave All-in-One Guide
Gyokusendo is Japan’s second-longest limestone cave, spanning over 5 kilometers. The approximately 800-meter-long accessible route is already breathtaking. As you enter the cave, the temperature drops and the light is dim, with various shapes of stalactites and stalagmites hanging from the ceiling. The entire journey takes around 40 to 60 minutes. Pair it with the ‘Okinawa World Cultural Kingdom’ outside, and you can enjoy traditional drum performances and Ryukyu Kingdom street scenery. On bad weather days, this is the perfect indoor backup plan in southern Okinawa.
■ Ashibinaa Outlet Mall: Last-minute shopping before your flight! Okinawa’s only outlet is right next to the airport
This is probably the highest ‘CP value’ last stop in all of Okinawa – Ashibinaa Outlet is just a 15-minute drive from Naha Airport, making it the only outlet mall on the main island of Okinawa. The semi-outdoor shopping street with a southern island resort atmosphere is very comfortable to walk around, with over 100 international brands and many popular styles with discounts that will get your heart racing. It’s recommended to arrange a visit here after checking in and before your flight. Don’t forget to bring your JCB card to the visitor center to collect a discount coupon, which can be used at over 30 stores with additional discounts.

A Mangrove Forest in the City
Located on the border of Naha and Tomigusuku, the Manko Waterbird and Wetland Center is one of Okinawa's most complete mangrove wetlands. Walking along the boardwalks surrounded by Kandelia and Avicennia trees, it is easy to forget you are still in the city. Despite being only a few kilometers from Naha Airport, it feels like another world.
Migratory Birds, Fiddler Crabs, and Mudskippers
Every autumn and winter, large numbers of migratory birds arrive, including the rare black-faced spoonbill, making Manko a premier birdwatching spot in Okinawa. The center provides high-magnification telescopes and interactive exhibits, making it suitable for families.
Outside of the migratory season, low tide is the best time to visit. The mudflats come alive with fiddler crabs and mudskippers, a sight rarely seen at other tourist attractions. Checking the daily tide schedule before your visit is highly recommended.
A Ramsar Site with Historical Significance
Despite the name "Manko," which translates to "Manko Lake," it is actually a tidal mudflat formed at the confluence of the Kokuba and Noha Rivers. In 1999, Manko was registered as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, a rare example of a wetland located in an urban area with international recognition.
Historically, this area was a vital hub for water transport and irrigation during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Today, the center's mangrove tours and biological observation activities continue to foster the connection between the local community and the land.
Free Admission: Perfect for Arrival or Departure Days
Admission to the Manko Waterbird and Wetland Center is free, including access to the exhibits and the mangrove boardwalks. Located near Naha Airport and Onoyama Park, it is an easy addition to your itinerary on your arrival day or before heading to the outer islands, requiring less than half a day to visit.
💡 Visiting Tips
Check the daily low tide schedule to see the most activity from fiddler crabs and mudskippers. The birdwatching season is from October to March, when black-faced spoonbills are most likely to be spotted. Telescopes are available for loan at the center; no need to bring your own equipment.

Tabelog Rating
3.47 (Ranked #1 Shokudo in the Naha/Tomigusuku area)
A long-standing tofu specialist, just 15 minutes from the airport
Kaiyo Shokudo in Nakachi, Tomigusuku, is a local institution beloved by both long-time residents and independent travelers. The restaurant has been making its own tofu since it opened, and they continue to hand-craft it in the kitchen daily until it sells out. Okinawa's "island tofu" differs from supermarket varieties; it is firmer, rich in soy flavor, and carries a natural hint of saltiness—the foundation for most of the dishes on the menu.
The interior retains a Showa-era atmosphere with tatami seating and handwritten menus, complemented by the warm, nostalgic service of the staff. With generous portions and affordable prices, this is the perfect spot to experience authentic, everyday Okinawan home cooking.
Must-try dishes: Tofu Chanpuru and Yushi Tofu
While the menu features many tofu-based dishes, the "Tofu Chanpuru" (stir-fried tofu) is a standout. The house-made island tofu is pan-seared until golden, then tossed with bitter melon, vegetables, and pork. The exterior remains crispy while the inside stays soft and juicy. Also recommended is "Yushi Tofu," a fluffy, unpressed tofu served in a delicate bonito broth—a light and comforting choice, especially for breakfast.
For larger groups, the "Tofu Nabusaa" (miso-braised tofu) and the Yushi Tofu Soba topped with hearty pork belly are excellent additions. Don't miss the side of "Okara" (stir-fried soy pulp) that comes with the meal; many regulars consider this humble, house-made side dish a hidden highlight.
Perfectly positioned for your rental car itinerary
Kaiyo Shokudo is conveniently located for those driving. Less than 15 minutes from Naha Airport and near the Nakachi IC, it serves as a perfect stop whether you are heading south toward Toyosaki and Senaga Island, or north into Naha city. It is an ideal first stop after picking up your rental car, or a convenient lunch spot before returning your vehicle on your final day. Parking is hassle-free compared to the crowded city center.
💡 Tips before you go
Free parking is available in front of the shop and across the street. However, it gets crowded with local office workers between 12:00 and 13:30, and spaces are relatively tight. We recommend visiting around 10:30 or after 1

Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace|Mediterranean-style photogenic spot near Naha Airport
Okinawa's "Amalfi Coast": White terraces facing the sea
Located just south of Naha Airport, Senaga Island is less than a 15-minute drive away, yet feels like a world apart. Umikaji Terrace features tiered white buildings cascading down the slope, each level facing the ocean. On sunny days, the blue sky, sea, and architecture blend into one. Inspired by Italy's Amalfi Coast, the facility attracts over 3.3 million visitors annually, making it one of the most popular complexes in southern Okinawa.
Over 40 stylish shops for dining and shopping
The complex houses over 40 shops, ranging from local Okinawan pottery, Ryukyu textiles, and artisanal perfumes to creative taco rice, seafood burgers, fresh marlin bowls, and Okinawa soba. Enjoy a cocktail at an outdoor seat facing the sea while watching planes pass overhead at low altitude—a rare sight for a commercial facility. "A Happy Pancake" (幸せのパンケーキ) has a branch here; its fluffy, thick pancakes are highly popular on social media, so arriving early on weekends is recommended.
The final stop before Naha Airport
For travelers flying to Okinawa, Senaga Island offers a practical advantage: it is only 15 minutes from Naha Airport (OKA). Whether you visit upon arrival or as a final stop before your flight, it is perfectly situated. Many visitors use it as a last-minute destination to pick up souvenirs and enjoy one final Okinawan meal before heading to the terminal. The terraced design ensures open ocean views from every level, making it easy to take photos without crowds.
Natural salt springs with views of the Kerama Islands
For a longer stay, visit the Ryukyu Onsen Senagajima Hotel to experience "Ryujin-no-Yu." This facility uses rare natural salt springs. The open-air bath offers direct views toward the Kerama Islands, providing an unforgettable sunset experience. The hotel offers day-trip bathing, making it a perfect addition to an afternoon itinerary.
Accessible without a car: Free shuttle bus available
Umikaji Terrace provides a free shuttle bus to and from Akamine Station on the Okinawa Monorail, as well as the "Senaga Island Airport Limousine" service directly to Naha Airport. It is highly convenient for independent travelers who prefer not to rent a car.
💡 Planning Tip
Umikaji Terrace offers excellent sunset views, so try to arrive around dusk. Looking west from the island on a clear day, you can watch the sun

Located on Senaga Island, approx. 15–20 minutes by car from Naha Airport; approx. 2.6 km from Akamine Monorail Station, accessible via Senaga Island shuttle bus.
Watch planes land from your seat: A highlight near Naha Airport
POSILLIPO cucina meridionale is situated on the highlands of Senaga Island, adjacent to the tiered white buildings of Umikaji Terrace. With an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean and its proximity to Naha Airport, the terrace offers a front-row seat to planes landing and taking off overhead—a popular photo opportunity. Whether you are arriving in Okinawa or preparing to return your rental car, POSILLIPO is a convenient stop.
Wood-fired Neapolitan pizza with local Okinawan vegetables and fresh seafood
The menu features Southern Italian cuisine focusing on simple, high-quality ingredients like salt, olive oil, and local citrus. Okinawan vegetables and fresh local fish are prepared with this minimalist approach. The pizza is highly recommended; prepared by a resident Pizzaiolo using imported Italian flour and baked in a wood-fired oven, the crust is charred and chewy, topped with mozzarella. The restaurant follows a "Slow Food" philosophy, perfect for a relaxed lunch.
The best time to visit: 45 minutes before sunset
Sunset is the most popular time at POSILLIPO. As the sky shifts from blue to orange, the silhouettes of passing planes create a perfect photo opportunity that lasts about 20 minutes. The rooftop bar, "MARE," offers a different atmosphere at night, ideal for enjoying the Okinawa night view. Please note that a ¥550 table charge per person applies after 17:00.
💡 Reservation and Seating Tips
Check the sunset time for your visit and book a terrace seat 30 to 45 minutes prior. This allows you to witness the rapid color changes of the sky. Terrace seating is highly popular and often fully booked during peak seasons; it is recommended to book in advance via the official website, as securing a front-row ocean view seat on the spot is difficult.
The birthplace of Omutaco, located in the white terraced mall of Senaga Island
Taco Rice Cafe Kijimunaa (タコライスカフェ きじむなぁ) is a staple of Okinawa's food scene, famous as the originator of "Omutaco" (omelet taco rice). While now found across the island, this is where the signature fluffy egg-topped taco rice began. The Senaga Island branch is located within Umikaji Terrace, a white, tiered shopping complex built into a hillside that is often compared to a Greek island and is a destination in its own right.
The outdoor terrace seats are highly coveted, offering direct ocean views. On clear days, you can see the Kerama Islands, and planes approaching Naha Airport fly low overhead—the noise is striking, but it makes for a great photo opportunity. Indoor seating is air-conditioned, making it a comfortable choice for families or rainy days.
How to customize your Omutaco
The signature "Omutaco" features turmeric rice topped with spiced ground meat, a fluffy, half-cooked omelet, salsa, lettuce, and cheese. The creamy egg balances the spice of the meat and the acidity of the salsa, resulting in a surprisingly light flavor profile.
You can customize the spice level of the meat, ranging from mild (sweet) to habanero-level heat. Toppings such as avocado, mozzarella, charred bacon, and fries are available. A satisfying meal typically stays within a ¥1,000 budget.
Perfect for your first or last stop in Okinawa
Located just 15 minutes from Naha Airport, Senaga Island is a popular first or last stop for those renting a car. It is an ideal spot to grab a meal and explore the mall upon arrival or during those final hours before returning your rental car.
Umikaji Terrace offers a shared parking lot for drivers. Non-drivers can easily reach the island via shuttle from Akamine Station. The Ryujin-no-Yu natural hot spring is also nearby if you have extra time.
💡 Best visited at sunset
If your schedule permits, visit in the evening. After 17:00, the sunset light over the water is spectacular. You can watch the planes landing at Naha Airport while enjoying the sunset. Order an Omutaco at Kijimunaa’s outdoor seating, wait for the sun to set, and then stroll through the illuminated mall—the atmosphere transforms completely once night falls.

A Vibrant Orange Sign Amidst White Architecture
Located at Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace, Shisaa Shop is a distinctive Shisa (guardian lion) specialty store. Its bright orange sign stands out against the white buildings, making it a natural draw for visitors. The shop features handcrafted Shisa statues by local Okinawan artisans, each with unique expressions—a significant step up from mass-produced souvenirs.
Shisa Painting DIY: Create Your Own Souvenir
The shop’s most popular activity is Shisa painting DIY. You receive a plain figurine and have complete creative freedom to choose colors, patterns, and expressions. With the sea breeze blowing and airplanes occasionally passing overhead, it is a memorable way to spend time. It is highly recommended for families and couples; allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy the process.
Traditional Beliefs Reimagined as Contemporary Design
In Okinawan culture, Shisa are guardian spirits traditionally placed in pairs on rooftops or gates to ward off evil. The Shisa at Shisaa Shop differ from the traditional, stoic figures; they feature lively expressions, bold colors, and even humorous designs, making them popular with younger travelers and international visitors. The shop successfully transforms centuries-old cultural symbols into modern, desirable souvenirs.
A Must-Visit Near Naha Airport
Senaga Island is located just minutes from Naha Airport, making it an ideal stop. Many visitors include Umikaji Terrace as their first destination upon arrival or their final stop before departure to pick up last-minute souvenirs. After choosing your Shisa, you can enjoy the iconic view of airplanes flying over the white buildings against the backdrop of the sea. If you are planning a Tomigusuku sightseeing itinerary or looking for attractions near Naha Airport, Shisaa Shop and Umikaji Terrace are well worth including.
💡 DIY Painting Tips
It is recommended to check for availability on-site, as wait times may occur during peak season. Since the paint requires time to dry, consider doing this early in your itinerary to allow the piece to set before packing. The shop provides packaging for your finished Shisa, making it safe to carry on your flight.

Scenic Oceanfront American Dining on Senaga Island: PHILLY Kingrolls
White-tiered architecture and plane spotting: A terrace you won't want to leave
PHILLY Kingrolls is located within Umikaji Terrace on Senaga Island. Known for its white, tiered architecture and expansive ocean views, this area is often compared to Santorini and is a must-visit photo spot in southern Okinawa. PHILLY Kingrolls features an American street-style aesthetic, energetic staff, and a relaxed atmosphere.
The highlight is the outdoor oceanfront seating. Perfectly positioned facing the Naha Airport runway, the sight of planes flying low overhead is impressive. Coupled with the sea breeze, it is the ideal spot to unwind. As sunset approaches, the shifting colors of the sky and sea make it a perfect place to wait for the evening. Whether you are looking to relax after arriving or seeking a final spot before departing, the location and atmosphere are ideal.
Burgers and Tacos: You can't go wrong
The signature dish at PHILLY Kingrolls is the American beef burger. Made to order, the patties are thick and juicy, served with fresh-fried fries. Hearty eaters can opt for the 300g version.
Another popular choice is the tacos and American-style beef rolls. While Okinawa has its own taco rice culture, this version stays closer to the American original, featuring seasoned ground meat, lettuce, and salsa in a shell. Pair it with an Orion draft or a Corona for the quintessential island afternoon.
15 minutes from the airport: The perfect final stop before returning your rental car
Senaga Island is located just south of Naha Airport, connected to the main island by a sea road. It is easily accessible by car and offers free parking. For those not driving, a shuttle route from Akamine Station is available.
If you have a few hours to spare on your final day, Senaga Island is a great way to fill your schedule: enjoy a meal at PHILLY Kingrolls, watch the sea from the terrace, browse souvenirs at Umikaji Terrace, or consider a soak at the nearby Ryukyu Onsen Senagajima Hotel (Ryujin-no-Yu).
💡 Note for travelers with evening flights
If you have an evening flight, we recommend scheduling Senaga Island for your final afternoon. After exploring southern attractions, drive here to enjoy a burger and wait for the sunset before returning your car. It is only 10 to 15 minutes away

The scenery shifts from the brilliant blue of the daytime sky to Okinawa’s famous fiery sunsets, providing a completely different experience depending on the time of day.
Salt Spring Water from 1,000 Meters Underground
Drawn from 1,000 meters underground, the water is a salt spring, a rarity in Okinawa’s geological environment. Salt springs are known for their excellent heat-retention properties, helping to warm the body and relieve stiffness after a long flight. Often called a "beauty bath" and a "child-bearing bath," its proximity to the airport makes it a popular final stop before departure. In addition to the outdoor standing bath, the facility features pot baths and Finnish saunas to suit your preference.
Pair with Umikaji Terrace for a Perfect Afternoon
Ryujin no Yu is located right next to Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace, accessible by foot. This white, Mediterranean-style shopping complex features cafes like Happy Pancake, souvenir shops, and various restaurants. It is ideal to spend the afternoon browsing and dining before heading to the hot spring as the sun begins to set. If you have a late-night or early-morning flight, the airport is less than a 10-minute drive away, making this a convenient final stop.
💡 Bathing Tips
Sunset (around 18:00, varies by season) is the most popular time at Ryujin no Yu. Space in the outdoor standing bath is limited, so arriving 30 minutes early during peak season is recommended. The facility is least crowded during the first hour after opening at 06:00; morning bathers can enjoy a quieter atmosphere and unique ocean lighting.

Tabelog Rating
3.42 (Top-rated ice cream shop in the Tomigusuku area)
Okinawa's Soul Dessert Born from U.S. Bases
BLUE SEAL holds a place in the hearts of locals similar to long-standing traditional ice cream parlors elsewhere. Established in 1948 at the U.S. military base in Gushikawa, the brand originally provided a taste of home for stationed personnel. Over time, it blended rich American recipes with local tropical ingredients, creating unique flavors found only in Okinawa. The blue and white sign has since become a staple of the Okinawa landscape.
The Tomiton branch offers indoor seating and air conditioning, providing a much more comfortable experience than the crowded, standing-room-only locations on Kokusai-dori. It is an ideal spot for drivers to escape the sun and enjoy a treat.
Must-Try Flavors: Salt Chinsuko and Beni-imo
With over 30 flavors available, choosing can be difficult. However, the top recommendation is almost always "Salt Chinsuko." It features bits of traditional Okinawan Chinsuko cookies mixed into vanilla ice cream, with Chatan salt enhancing the creamy profile and providing a perfect sweet-and-salty balance.
For a local taste, the "Beni-imo" (purple yam) flavor offers a vibrant color and balanced sweetness, while the "Shikuwasa" (Okinawan citrus) is a refreshing choice for hot days. The Tomiton branch also serves made-to-order crepes and American-style milkshakes, making it a family-friendly destination.
The Perfect Final Stop Before the Airport
Located just a three-minute walk from Okinawa Outlet Mall ASHIBINAA and near the DMM Kariyushi Aquarium and iias Okinawa Toyosaki, this branch is highly convenient for travelers in the southern region. It is an ideal spot to stop after shopping at ASHIBINAA or visiting Senaga Island. You can park in the free lot at TOMITON, enjoy some ice cream, and then head to return your rental car.

Located on the second floor of Okinawa Outlet Mall ASHIBINAA in Tomigusuku, "Miyarabi" takes its name from the Okinawan dialect for "beautiful girl." The store is well-organized, offering a balanced selection of traditional specialties and modern snacks. It is an ideal spot for first-time visitors to browse a comprehensive range of Okinawan goods.
What to buy
Miyarabi stands out among southern Okinawa specialty shops for its consistent stock and unique local offerings.
Classic Souvenirs: Reliable stock of "Okashigoten" Beni-imo (purple yam) tarts, various Chinsuko cookies, and Awamori liquor.
Tomigusuku Local Produce: Unlike shops on Kokusai Dori, Miyarabi carries a wider range of local Tomigusuku processed agricultural products, particularly mango-based items like dried fruit, jams, and ice cream.

Okinawa Ashibinaa Outlet Must-Visit: IZONE NEW YORK
While many travelers may hesitate at the entrance of IZONE NEW YORK on the 2nd floor of Ashibinaa, it is a must-visit for those who wear glasses or sunglasses. Founded in 1992, the brand specializes in frames tailored for Asian facial structures, specifically addressing issues like low nose bridges and slipping frames. The difference in comfort compared to standard Western-fit frames is immediately noticeable upon trying them on.
Essential for Okinawa Drives: Try the i-Drive Polarized Lenses
Okinawa has some of the highest UV intensity in Japan, which can cause significant eye strain during long hours outdoors. If your trip includes driving or water activities, check out the i-Drive polarized lens series at IZONE NEW YORK. These lenses are designed to reduce glare from road and sea surfaces, providing clearer vision than standard sunglasses without the typical dark, uncomfortable tint of traditional polarized lenses. The store offers a wide range of styles from daily wear to outdoor sports.
Planning Your Ashibinaa Day Trip
Ashibinaa Outlet features over 100 international brands, making it a staple of southern Okinawa itineraries. Located just 15 minutes by bus from Naha Airport, it is easily combined with nearby spots like Toyosaki Chura Sun Beach. Visiting the store in person allows you to try on the latest seasonal styles for the perfect fit. The staff is professional and helpful.
💡 Southern Okinawa Driving Tip
Due to its proximity to Naha Airport, Ashibinaa is the perfect final stop before your flight. It fits seamlessly into a half-day itinerary alongside Toyosaki Chura Sun Beach or local seafood markets.

Located about 8 km from Naha International Street, a 20 to 25-minute drive.
The first stop after arrival, where many truly begin to feel the Okinawa vibe.
Less than 20 minutes south of Naha Airport along Route 331 lies Roadside Station Toyosaki. As the closest roadside station to the airport on the main island, it is a natural first stop for travelers still getting their bearings after picking up a rental car. The "Nanamaru" farmers' market inside sells fresh produce delivered directly from local Tomigusuku farms; the quality of the freshly picked items is distinct from supermarket shelves, making shopping a delight. A short walk away are DMM Kariyushi Aquarium and Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa, making it easy to cover the entire area in a single morning if traveling with children or looking to shop. It is also a convenient spot to pick up any last-minute souvenirs before heading home.
Tomigusuku mangoes; worth a special trip during the June to August season.
In Google Maps reviews and travel forums, mangoes are the most frequently mentioned highlight of Roadside Station Toyosaki. Known as the "Home of Japanese Mangoes," the town features stalls piled high with premium Irwin mangoes harvested from local farms between June and August. They are exceptionally sweet, juicy, and priced lower than in downtown Naha. If you miss the mango season, the Okinawa soba and local dishes featuring luffa are equally memorable, offering an easy and authentic introduction to Okinawan culinary culture.
1. The first thing to do after picking up your rental car: get organized.
2. Several major rental car agencies (including OTS Rent-a-Car) are located nearby. After picking up your vehicle, drive straight here to grab an Okinawa island map or sightseeing brochures at the information counter. Planning your route before heading out is much more efficient than navigating on the fly. During typhoon season, the real-time traffic and weather updates provided at the counter are also quite useful.
One lesser-known highlight: Roadside Station Toyosaki is located near the extended runway of Naha Airport. If you're waiting for someone or grabbing a drink in the outdoor seating area in the afternoon, you might catch planes flying low overhead. It’s a pleasant surprise for aviation enthusiasts and a great spot for families with children to pass the time.
3. 💡 Tips for your Southern Okinawa road trip
4. Roadside Station Toyosaki is located near 5. DMM Kariyushi Aquarium和 6. Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa7. . These three locations can be visited together without moving your car, making it the most effortless itinerary for your first or last day in Southern Okinawa. Only in Okinawa: The local favorite known as "Ender"
A&W (affectionately called "Ender" by locals) is an American fast-food chain found in Japan only in Okinawa. Originating during the U.S. military occupation, it has been part of island life since the postwar era. This branch at iias Okinawa Toyosaki, which opened in 2020, offers a more spacious and brighter environment than older roadside locations. It is perfect for families or groups, and a great spot to escape the summer heat.
Free refills on Root Beer—worth the visit alone
The signature "The A&W Burger" is a must-try, featuring a thick beef patty, ham, onion rings, and cream cheese. It is best paired with their signature curly fries. However, many visitors come specifically for the Root Beer. This herbal, spiced carbonated drink is polarizing for first-timers but highly addictive. Dine-in orders include FREE REFILLS, making it an ideal spot to relax for an hour.
A perfect stop after picking up your car or before returning it
The iias Okinawa Toyosaki location is ideal for road trips. It is just a 15-minute drive from Naha Airport and sits right next to the DMM Kariyushi Aquarium, with ASHIBINAA Outlet and Toyosaki Beach within walking distance. It is a convenient stop for a quick meal after picking up your rental car or for last-minute shopping before heading to the airport. It also serves as a great rainy-day destination when combined with the aquarium and mall.
💡 Why choose this over the airport branch?
The A&W at Naha Airport is often crowded with long lines and limited seating. The iias Toyosaki branch offers a large free parking lot and accepts credit cards and PayPay. If you get hooked on the Root Beer, you can even buy canned versions at the mall's supermarket to enjoy at your hotel.

DMM Kariyushi Aquarium is located on the 2nd floor of the iias Okinawa Toyosaki shopping center. While it may not look like a traditional aquarium from the outside, it offers a unique blend of light projections, ambient sound, and live exhibits. Rather than traditional educational displays, the space functions more like an art installation inspired by marine and forest ecosystems, making it highly photogenic.
The aquarium spans two floors: the 2nd floor "Evergreen Forest" recreates the lighting of a subtropical jungle, where sloths can be seen at eye level. The 1st floor "Clear Sea" features large tanks and jellyfish exhibits in a dimly lit space, creating a stunning atmosphere for photography—perfect for couples and families.
Highlights: Glass Floors and Feeding Experiences
The most popular photo spot is the "Clear Ocean" tank with a glass floor. Walking across it provides a thrilling view of sharks and rays swimming beneath your feet. The touch pool allows visitors to interact with starfish and small sharks. Additionally, there are feeding experiences for otters, penguins, and sloths available for an extra fee; it is recommended to check availability and book upon arrival.
The facility is significantly smaller than the Churaumi Aquarium in the north. A typical visit takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. While it may not be a full-day destination, its focus on technology and interactivity offers a different experience from traditional aquariums.
Ideal for Arrival or Rainy Days
Located just 15 minutes from Naha Airport and integrated with the iias Toyosaki shopping center, the aquarium is convenient for dining and shopping without needing further travel. It serves as an excellent indoor alternative for rainy days in southern Okinawa and is particularly well-suited for families with children, thanks to the mall's ample parking.
💡 Download the App Before Entering
There are no physical information plaques for the animals. Instead, all information is accessed via Bluetooth through the DMM Kariyushi Aquarium official app. The app also features a stamp rally game for children. Be sure to download it before entering to avoid delays.

A 700-meter white sand beach where planes fly overhead
Toyosaki Seaside Park Chura SUN Beach is the largest and best-equipped seaside park in southern Okinawa. Its curved beach stretches for nearly 700 meters with fine white sand and clear water. Facing west, it offers a prime vantage point for sunsets. On clear days, the sky transitions from golden to deep orange and purple—a favorite spot for locals to watch the sunset.
What makes this beach unique is its proximity to the Naha Airport flight path. Visitors can watch planes fly low overhead, accompanied by the roar of engines and the sea breeze. The beach is divided into a northern swimming area and a southern sports area, equipped with safety nets and lifeguards. Even without swimming, the seaside promenade is perfect for a stroll.
Combine shopping, aquarium, and sunset in one day
A major advantage of Chura SUN Beach is its proximity to other attractions, making it easy to plan a half-day or full-day itinerary:
iias Okinawa Toyosaki & DMM Kariyushi Aquarium: Located just steps from the beach. Spend the afternoon shopping and visiting the aquarium, then head to the beach for the sunset.
Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa: A 6 to 7-minute drive away, this is the closest outlet for shopping before the sunset.

Top Choice for Clear Broth in Southern Okinawa: Sobadokoro Tamaya Toyosaki
Approx. 15-min drive from Naha Airport. Approx. 3–5-min drive from Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa.
Tabelog Rating
3.44 (Southern branch of the Okinawa Soba Championship-winning Tamaya)
A branch of the inaugural Okinawa Soba champion, featuring a broth you'll want to finish to the last drop
Sobadokoro Tamaya Toyosaki maintains the exact same broth-making process as its flagship store, which won the first-ever Okinawa Soba Championship. Unlike many shops that rely on heavy pork bone bases, Tamaya specializes in a clear broth. Slow-simmered with pork bones and dried bonito, the resulting soup is amber-hued and clear, yet offers a deep, sweet complexity that is light and addictive.
The interior is bright and spacious, and the staff are efficient and friendly, making it accessible even for first-time visitors. Orders are placed via a ticket machine, and even during busy periods, wait times are generally short.
The local way: Combine your Okinawa Soba with a bowl of juicy
The most popular item is the "Mixed Soba," featuring both soft pork rib (soki) and pork belly (sanmainiku). The former is stewed until falling off the bone, while the latter offers a perfect fat-to-meat ratio. The noodles are a custom thin, straight variety that absorbs the broth well and provides a satisfying chew. Pairing it with a bowl of seasoned rice (juicy) is the standard local way to ensure a hearty meal.
Fresh mugwort (fuchiba) is provided at the table; adding it to your hot soup releases an herbal aroma that complements the bonito flavor. A few drops of chili-infused awamori (koregusu) add another layer of depth, so be sure to try both.
Conveniently located: 15 minutes from the airport and 5 minutes from Ashibinaa
Located in the Toyosaki district of southern Naha, this area has seen rapid development. The DMM Kariyushi Aquarium, iias Okinawa Toyosaki shopping mall, and Ashibinaa Outlet Mall are all just minutes away. Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace is a short drive south, while Naha city center is to the north. For those driving, it is a perfect stop for a first meal upon arrival, a shopping break, or a final bowl before departure.
💡 Tips for your visit
Ample free parking is available. Note that the shop closes at 15:00 on Mondays and Thursdays and is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so plan accordingly. The ticket machine is cash only; please have
Japan's Southernmost Roadside Station: A Local Seafood Favorite
Roadside Station Itoman is Japan's southernmost roadside station. More importantly, it is a local hub for fresh seafood and produce, serving southern Okinawa residents rather than just tourists. The complex consists of three main areas: "Itoman Fish Market," "JA Okinawa Farmer's Market (Umanchu Market)," and "Yu-Kurashi," which offers souvenirs and local dining. Prices are wholesale-oriented, and the freshness is superior to typical tourist spots.
The fish market is the most vibrant area. Stalls display lobster, oysters, sea urchin, sashimi, and sea grapes. Many vendors offer on-site grilling for immediate consumption or takeaway. Public seating is available outside, allowing you to enjoy your meal without visiting a restaurant.
A Convenient Hub for Southern Okinawa
Located centrally among popular southern attractions, this station is perfect for self-drive itineraries:
Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa and iias Okinawa Toyosaki: A 10-minute drive north; perfect for shopping after a seafood meal.
Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace: A 15-minute drive; ideal for afternoon tea while watching planes.
Okinawa World (Gyokusendo) and Peace Memorial Park: A 20–25 minute drive southeast; easily combined for a full day of history and culture.
Don't Miss the Produce and Souvenirs
For fresh fruit and local ingredients, visit the "JA Okinawa Farmer's Market." It features seasonal produce delivered daily by local farmers, including island bananas, Okinawa mangoes, and Agu pork at prices lower than tourist areas.
"Yu-Kurashi" is a one-stop shop for souvenirs such as Awamori, brown sugar snacks, and local Itoman crafts. The facility also includes restaurants serving Itoman fish soup and Okinawa soba, making it convenient for both dining and shopping.
💡 Pro-tip
For the widest selection of seafood, visit between 11:00 and 13:00, when grilled food stalls are fully stocked. It is also an excellent stop for last-minute souvenir shopping before a late flight. Sea grapes can be packed for travel, and prices here are significantly more affordable than on Kokusai-dori.

3.40 (Iconic tuna restaurant within Itoman City Product Center)
Directly operated by a fishing fleet: The tuna specialist at Japan's southernmost roadside station
Maguroya Miikagan is located inside the "Michi-no-Eki Itoman" product center, the southernmost roadside station in Japan. It is operated by the local Okinawa company "Sanko Co., Ltd.," which owns a large-scale tuna fishing fleet and its own processing plant. By handling everything from catch to processing and serving, the tuna here is exceptionally fresh and reasonably priced—the kind of place you'll wish you had discovered sooner.
The interior is spacious, featuring traditional Okinawan concrete block (hana-block) decor, sunken seating areas, and private rooms. The occasional live tuna filleting shows are a highlight, creating a vibrant atmosphere for diners.
Supreme Tuna Bowls and Lobster with Sea Urchin Sauce: A menu full of tough choices
The menu is extensive, making it hard to choose. The most popular item is the "Kiwami Maguro-don" (Supreme Tuna Bowl), topped with fatty tuna (otoro), medium fatty tuna (chutoro), and lean tuna (akami). The way the fat melts on the tongue paired with vinegared rice explains why locals insist on eating tuna here. Another must-try is the "Lobster with Sea Urchin Sauce," featuring thick lobster meat topped with a rich, savory sea urchin sauce—a satisfying, indulgent dish.
Non-sashimi options are also available, including deep-fried tuna cutlet (maguro katsu) sets, fish soup, and goya champuru, making it a great spot for families and seniors.
15 minutes south of Naha Airport: A perfect stop between Senaga Island and southern attractions
Located in Nishizaki-cho, Itoman, right off the Route 331 bypass, Maguroya Miikagan is perfectly positioned for a southern Okinawa road trip. It works well as a lunch stop on your arrival day or a final meal before heading back to the airport.

More than just a "Shokudo"
Itoman Gyomin Shokudo is located in Itoman, a city in southern Okinawa historically known as a fishing hub. While the name suggests a casual port-side eatery, the exterior features traditional Ryukyu limestone, and the interior offers a quiet, modern atmosphere that contrasts with the industrial feel of the nearby harbor.
Owner and chef Mr. Tamashiro comes from a family of fish wholesalers, allowing him to source the freshest local catch, known as "Imaiyu," as soon as boats dock. The menu focuses on traditional fishing village cuisine refined with modern techniques. It is a favorite among local connoisseurs.
The Sizzling Signature Dish
The must-order is the "Imaiyu no Butter-yaki" (Seasonal Butter-Grilled Fish Set). Choose your fish from the daily blackboard selection—often premium Okinawa varieties like Akamachi or Mibai—and select your sauce. When served on a hot iron plate, the staff pours "Aosa Butter" (Okinawa sea lettuce butter sauce) over it; the resulting sizzle and aroma are sure to turn heads.
The fish skin is crispy while the meat remains tender. Another popular dish is the "Fish Soup Set," a traditional fisherman's staple featuring a sweet, sesame-based broth. Meals conclude with a small portion of handmade tofu pudding or Okinawa brown sugar zenzai.
A Perfect Stop in the South, 20 Minutes from Naha Airport
Strategically located near Naha Airport and the major roadside station "Michi-no-Eki Itoman," the restaurant is easy to reach by car. It fits perfectly into a southern itinerary, whether you are heading to Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace, shopping at Ashibinaa Outlet, or visiting Peace Memorial Park or Chinen Misaki.
With lunch priced between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999, it offers exceptional value for premium local seafood.
💡 Essential Tips
Itoman Gyomin Shokudo does not accept reservations. Expect queues before opening (around 11:25). Upon arrival, be sure to sign the registration sheet at the entrance; standing in line without registering does not count.

Wood-ash noodles and slow-aging: A destination-worthy bowl
Established in 1984 in Shiozaki-cho, Itoman, Nanbu Soba is a premier Okinawa soba institution in the south. The restaurant is renowned for its noodles: instead of store-bought, they use the traditional "wood-ash method" to craft their own, followed by a long, low-temperature aging process. The resulting wavy noodles are firm, chewy, and excellent at absorbing the broth—redefining the common perception of Okinawa soba.
The interior is spacious, featuring standard tables, tatami seating, and an outdoor terrace. The aroma of bonito and pork bone greets you upon entry, creating a casual, authentic atmosphere popular with both locals and travelers.
Signature Trotter Soba: Melt-in-your-mouth pork with clear bonito broth
The must-order is the Nanbu Soba (Tebichi Soba). The pig's trotters are slow-cooked in a special sauce and black vinegar to remove excess fat while retaining collagen. The skin is tender and the meat falls off the bone, with a balanced sweet and savory flavor.
The broth is a clear, refined bonito and pork bone blend that is flavorful yet light. Pair it with a side of "Juicy" (traditional Okinawa seasoned rice) or the "Sanmai-niku Soba" (pork belly soba) for a satisfying lunch.
A perfect first stop south of Naha Airport
Nanbu Soba is strategically located for southern Okinawa road trips. Situated along the main route south from Naha Airport, it is a convenient 30-minute drive upon arrival. It fits perfectly into an itinerary heading toward Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace, Toyosaki Seaside Park, Okinawa World (Gyokusendo), Peace Memorial Park, or Makabi Chinā without needing to detour.
If you are picking up a rental car at the airport and heading south, this is an ideal first stop for lunch.
💡 Pro Tips
Nanbu Soba is open for lunch only (11:00–15:30) and closes when ingredients run out; arriving early during peak season is recommended. Parking is available with 10 spaces in front and a second lot for 20 vehicles diagonally across the street. The restaurant is family-friendly and accepts PayPay and credit cards.
Approx. 500m from Itoman City Hall toward Shiozaki Beach. Approx. 20–25 minutes by car from Naha Airport.
Tabelog Rating
3.52 (Ranked #1 for Italian/Pizza in Itoman/Mabuni area)
Wood-fired pizza by the Pacific: A destination dining spot in Itoman
Restaurant & Bar PORTO is tucked away in Shiozaki-cho, Itoman, in southern Okinawa, right next to Shiozaki Beach. The restaurant features a row of ocean-facing seats, and the terrace area offers an unobstructed view of the Pacific with the soothing sound of waves. The sunset view from this angle is spectacular, making it a popular spot for locals to reserve in advance.
The cuisine matches the scenery. The kitchen is equipped with a professional Italian wood-fired oven. Pizzas are hand-stretched and baked at high temperatures using longan wood, resulting in a perfectly charred, leopard-spotted crust that is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside—a distinct difference from electric-oven pizzas.
Must-try: Margherita, Bismarck, and the Blue Crab Tomato Cream Pasta
The menu shines with its classics. The Margherita features a tangy tomato sauce base, mozzarella, and fresh basil, served hot with perfectly melted cheese. For something richer, the Bismarck pizza topped with a soft-boiled egg and prosciutto offers a wonderful depth of flavor when the yolk is broken.
The pasta selection is highlighted by the Blue Crab Tomato Cream Pasta, where the sweetness of the crab infuses the creamy sauce. Lunch sets are available, including a salad and drink, keeping the budget comfortably under ¥1,500.
A perfect dinner stop for southern Okinawa road trips
PORTO is conveniently located for those exploring the south. It is an easy stop if you are returning from Peace Memorial Park, Cape Kyan, or Hyakuna Beach. It is also just a 10–12 minute drive from ASHIBINAA Outlet or DMM Kariyushi Aquarium, making it an ideal dinner destination after an afternoon of shopping or sightseeing.
💡 Reservations and Parking
Free public parking is available directly across from the restaurant. Window and terrace seats during sunset are highly sought after; reservations are recommended (098-959-0211). Please note the restaurant closes at 15:

A Landmark of Southern Okinawa: The Stained Glass Dome
Ryukyu Glass Village in Itoman is the largest handcrafted glass workshop on Okinawa Island. The entrance features a dome made of thousands of pieces of colored glass; when the sunlight hits, the interior transforms into a kaleidoscope. With showrooms, a factory, and workshop spaces all indoors or covered, it is an ideal rainy-day destination in southern Okinawa.
The origin of Ryukyu glass is fascinating. In the post-war era, when resources were scarce, local artisans recycled discarded Coca-Cola and beer bottles left by the U.S. military. The impurities in the recycled glass created unique bubbles and deeper, thicker colors, eventually evolving into the distinct style known today as Ryukyu glass. In the workshop, you can watch artisans blow and shape glass beside 1,000°C furnaces—a powerful and immersive experience.
Southern Okinawa Day Trip: Recommended Nearby Spots
Located in Itoman, Ryukyu Glass Village is close to several key attractions:
Okinawa World & Gyokusendo: About a 15-minute drive. Featuring one of Japan's largest limestone caves, it pairs perfectly with a glassmaking session.
Peace Memorial Park / Himeyuri Monument: A 5–8 minute drive. These are essential sites for understanding WWII history in Okinawa.
Senaga Island Umikaji Terrace: About a 25-minute drive back toward Naha. Perfect for sunset views and dinner.
Glassblowing, Demonstrations, and an Outlet Section
The popular "Glassblowing Experience" includes professional guidance through every step—from blowing and rotating to shaping. Children aged 6 and up can participate. For those who cannot wait for the overnight cooling process, the facility offers quick workshops like glass painting or kaleidoscope making.
The shop offers a wide range of items, from daily glassware to decorative lighting. Notably, there is an Outlet Section featuring pieces with slight imperfections in bubble distribution or shape at discounted prices, offering great value for those looking to bring home multiple items.
💡 Note on Glassblowing
Finished glass pieces require overnight cooling (annealing) and cannot be taken home the same day. It is recommended to visit during the first few days of your Okinawa trip so you can return to collect your items. International shipping is available for a fee, but it is costly; planning ahead is the best way to save time and money.

Himeyuri Peace Museum (ひめゆり平和祈念資料館), located in Itoman in the southern part of Okinawa Island, is dedicated to the memory of the "Himeyuri Student Corps." Comprised of students and teachers from the Okinawa Prefectural First Girls' High School and the Okinawa Women's Normal School, these students were mobilized as nurses during the 1945 Battle of Okinawa; most did not survive.
The museum houses personal testimonies, artifacts, manuscripts, and a replica of a wartime shelter. Rather than focusing on statistics, the exhibits highlight individual lives—their names, pre-war photos, and personal words—offering a glimpse into who they were before the war. It is a profound experience for any traveler seeking to understand modern Okinawan history.
Southern Okinawa Itinerary Suggestions
Located at the southern tip of Itoman, the museum is within a 15-minute drive of several historical and natural sites, making it ideal for a day trip:
Okinawa World (Gyokusendo): About a 15-minute drive. Exploring the limestone caves and Ryukyu culture in the morning, followed by the museum in the afternoon, provides a balanced pace.
Peace Memorial Park: A 5-minute drive away. Directly linked to the museum's historical context, the park features the "Cornerstone of Peace," which lists the names of all those who perished in the Battle of Okinawa.
Senaga Island or Southern Coastline: After visiting these somber sites, many choose to end their day watching the sunset at Senaga Island, located about 20 minutes away, for a moment of reflection.
Language, Photography, and Atmosphere
Exhibits include translations in Chinese, English, and Korean, with audio guides available. The "Himeyuri Monument" and the Ihara Third Surgical Trench site nearby remain places where visitors pay their respects, and the area is frequently visited by Japanese school groups. Please note that photography is prohibited in certain areas out of respect for the deceased; check the signs upon entry.
💡 Visitor Tips
The exhibits are extensive; allow 1 to 1.5 hours for your visit. If traveling with children, parental guidance is recommended as some content is sensitive. A large free parking lot is available on-site.
No License Required: Ride an ATV Through the Banyan Jungle
Located in Itoman, southern Okinawa, Gajumarunture Itoman offers a unique experience: no driver's license is required, and you can start riding after brief instructions from the on-site guide. ATV controls are intuitive, and the instructor will help you master the basics before departure. Children can ride as passengers with adults, making this one of the few outdoor activities suitable for all ages.
The route winds through a subtropical jungle filled with Banyan (Gajumaru) trees. The aerial roots hanging from the trunks create a dense, tangled canopy that filters the sunlight, offering a surreal atmosphere. Guides will stop at scenic spots along the way to help you capture photos that look completely different from the typical beach-themed Okinawa shots.
A Great Starting Point for a Southern Okinawa Day Trip
Gajumarunture Itoman is located within the "Itoman Tourism Farm," surrounded by several major southern Okinawa attractions, making it easy to include in your itinerary without extra detours:
Okinawa Peace Memorial Park: Located directly across from the site, featuring vast seaside lawns and historical monuments—perfect for relaxing after your ride.
Okinawa World & Gyokusendo: About a 15-minute drive away, featuring a massive limestone cave and traditional Ryukyu craft experiences.
John Man Beach (Odo Beach): About an 8-minute drive away, known for its rich intertidal zone and as one of the best snorkeling spots in the south.
Outdoor Fun That’s Even Better in the Rain
Okinawa's weather can be unpredictable, but this activity is actually enhanced by rain. After a shower, natural puddles form on the jungle trails, making the ride even more thrilling as you splash through them. Raincoats and boots are available for free rental on-site, so getting wet or muddy is part of the fun.
Beyond the ride, there is a segment where you will stop to walk through the forest. The guide will introduce native Okinawan flora, fauna, and local forest beliefs, turning the experience into an insightful ecological tour rather than just a high-speed ride.
💡 Two Things to Know Before You Go
While rain boots and protective gear are provided, we recommend wearing old clothes and shoes you don't mind getting dirty to fully enjoy the experience. Slots are limited; popular times can book out one

A National Memorial Park on Mabuni Hill, where the scenery invites reflection
Peace Memorial Park is located in Mabuni, Itoman, at the southernmost tip of Okinawa Island. This site was the final fierce battleground of the Battle of Okinawa during WWII. After the war, these hills were developed into a national memorial park overlooking the sea. The expansive grounds feature lawns stretching toward cliffs that drop into the Pacific Ocean. On clear days, the view of the blue expanse is breathtaking, creating a quiet, contemplative atmosphere that speaks louder than any plaque.
The park's centerpiece, the "Cornerstone of Peace," is inscribed with the names of over 240,000 people who lost their lives in the Battle of Okinawa, regardless of nationality or status. Nearby, the 45-meter-tall Peace Memorial Hall houses a large Buddha statue dedicated to world peace, serving as a prominent landmark in southern Okinawa.
A large playground where children can play for hours
Parents visiting with children need not worry about them losing interest. The park features the "Inochi no Tamago" (Egg of Life) playground, which is larger than expected. It includes long roller slides, climbing nets, and trampolines, with age-appropriate zones and careful safety designs. The surrounding open lawns are perfect for children to run around before visiting the memorial areas, allowing for a balanced pace.
💡 Tips for your visit
The park is vast with limited shade in summer; bring plenty of sunscreen and water. If visiting with children, park at the free lot near the "Kodomo Hiroba" (Children's Plaza) to save time. To fully understand the history, allow at least 1 hour for the Peace Memorial Museum, which provides subtitles in Chinese and English.

Minami no Eki Yaese is a roadside station (Michi-no-Eki) in Yaese, Southern Okinawa. It is smaller and less crowded than the popular stations in the central and northern regions, offering a more authentic look at daily life in Okinawa. Thanks to the favorable agricultural conditions in Yaese, the on-site market features fresh produce delivered daily by local farmers. Items such as purple yam (beni-imo), mangoes, and shikuwasa are staples here, often priced lower and fresher than in tourist areas. It is a highly recommended stop for those driving through Southern Okinawa.
The station houses several eateries serving staples like Okinawa Soba, as well as local goat dishes and light snacks. With spacious dining areas and convenient parking, it is an ideal, relaxed spot for a lunch break.
Parking, Information, and Souvenirs
The large, free parking lot accommodates even full-size vans, a major plus for families renting cars. The facility includes a tourist information desk with maps of Yaese and Southern Okinawa, as well as updates on local events, such as the Yaese Cherry Blossom Festival held from late January to February.
The building is bright and accessible, making it easy to navigate with strollers or for elderly visitors. Before leaving, try the purple yam soft-serve ice cream at the snack shop; it is a regional specialty that is both cheaper and fresher here than in Naha.
💡 Southern Okinawa Driving Itinerary Tip
For a day trip to the south, consider scheduling Minami no Eki Yaese for lunch. Spend your morning visiting Ou Island for tempura and cats, or exploring Gyokusendo. Head here for a bowl of Okinawa Soba and pick up seasonal fruit from the market to enjoy on the road. This helps avoid the crowds at major tourist restaurants and keeps your route efficient.

A 300,000-Year-Old Underground World: Gyokusendo Cave
Okinawa World is a popular comprehensive attraction in southern Okinawa. The highlight is Gyokusendo, one of Japan's three largest limestone caves. Formed over 300,000 years, the cave spans 5,000 meters, with an 890-meter section open to visitors. Inside, the temperature drops, revealing millions of stalactites and stalagmites illuminated to create a serene, spectacular atmosphere. The high-ceilinged "Oriental Hall" and the clear "Blue Spring" are particularly impressive.
The walking path is flat and takes about 30 minutes to complete. It is a one-way route that leads directly to the traditional craft village, so there is no need to backtrack. The entire experience is indoors, making it suitable for rainy days, hot summer afternoons, or families with children.
Above Ground: Ryukyu Houses and Eisa Performances
Exiting the cave leads to the Ryukyu Kingdom Castle Town, a designated National Tangible Cultural Property. The area features relocated century-old red-tiled Okinawan houses, resembling a miniature historical village. Visitors can rent Ryukyu costumes (Bingata) for photos or participate in workshops like indigo dyeing, pottery, and glassblowing.
Don't miss the daily "Super Eisa" show. This performance blends traditional Eisa ritual dance with modern choreography, featuring powerful drumming and high-energy movements. Note that photography and video recording are strictly prohibited during the performance.

Mysterious Prehistoric Green Valley: The Limestone Cave of "Gangala Valley"
A Subtropical Primeval Forest Formed by a Collapsed Ancient Limestone Cave
Gangala Valley features a unique geological formation. Hundreds of thousands of years ago, a massive limestone cave collapsed, opening the ceiling to sunlight and allowing plants to flourish, creating the valley seen today. Due to the fragility of the ecosystem and archaeological sites, independent entry is not permitted. Visitors must be accompanied by a professional guide for the entire 1 hour and 20 minute tour. Walking through the forest trail flanked by towering ferns and massive rock walls, with light filtering through the canopy, is an experience difficult to capture in photos.
The valley’s most iconic sight is the "Ufushu Banyan Tree," estimated to be over 150 years old and nearly 20 meters tall. Its aerial roots drape down from the cliff face, weaving into the ground on a scale that leaves visitors speechless.
Faith, Archaeology, and 20,000-Year-Old Remains: The Other Side of Gangala Valley
More than just a nature trail, the route passes two sacred cave sites: "Ikiga Cave" (Male Cave) and "Inagu Cave" (Female Cave). Since ancient times, locals have visited these sites to pray for safe childbirth, fertility, and matchmaking, with original ritual traces still preserved inside.
Archaeologically, Gangala Valley is a premier excavation site in Japan. Researchers discovered 20,000-year-old "Minatogawa Man" fossilized remains, stone and bone tools, and what is currently known as the oldest fishhook in Japan. Knowing that prehistoric humans once lived on this very ground adds a profound atmosphere to the tour.
Itinerary Planning: Combine Gangala Valley and Okinawa World
Located directly opposite Gangala Valley is Okinawa World (Culture Kingdom & Gyokusendo). Both are part of the same interconnected limestone cave system, making it ideal to visit them on the same day:
Cave Cafe: Located at the entrance of Gangala Valley, this cafe is built within an actual limestone cave. Even without a tour, it is worth visiting to enjoy 35 Coffee (roasted with coral) while relaxing beside limestone pillars.
Okinawa World (Gyokusendo): A 1-minute walk from Gangala, this site features one of Southeast Asia's largest limestone caves and Eisa drum performances, perfect for a half-day visit.
Ou Island: About a 10-minute drive away. Famous for fresh tempura, it is a great spot for lunch or an afternoon snack while experiencing the pace of an Okinawan southern fishing village.

One of the seven ancient castles in the Ryukyu Kingdom era.During the reign of the king, the highest priestess "Munetaka-Ōgimi" would hold a pilgrimage called "Agariumai" to pray for the prosperity of the country and the people. The castle site of Urasoe Castle was the final destination of the entire journey.Inside the castle, the "Sefa-utaki" ritual space where the gods of heaven and earth were worshipped is still preserved.Even today, as you step inside, you can still feel the quiet and solemn atmosphere.
Witness the sunrise on the summer solstice, as the light pierces through the circular gate of the castle.
Pushing open the wooden windows is the Pacific Ocean, and the water level is almost at your feet during high tide
Hamabe no Chaya, a cafe located in the southern part of Okinawa, is the oldest and most well-known cafe in the area. Many people say that it is the origin of the concept of "coastal cafes" in Okinawa. The wooden building is situated right on the coast, and the windows on the ocean side can be opened completely, offering a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. The sound of the waves and the sea breeze create a relaxing atmosphere, making it feel like you're floating on the water.
The best part about this cafe is that the view changes with the tide. During high tide, the water level is almost at your feet, and you'll feel like you're floating on the water. When the tide goes out, a large area of tidal flat and beach is exposed, and many people walk down to collect seashells or simply enjoy the view. The same seat offers a completely different view in the morning and afternoon, which is one of the reasons why many people return to this cafe.
Signature rural sandwiches, limited handmade cakes, and dishes that are carefully prepared, unlike just selling scenery
Hamabe no Chaya's dishes are more carefully prepared than many cafes that rely solely on their scenic views. The most popular dish is the "Rural-Style Sandwich" made with locally baked bread, fresh vegetables, and cheese. The portion is not large, but it's very comfortable to eat, making it a perfect choice for breakfast or lunch. The "Croque Monsieur" and handmade pizza are also popular choices for lunch.
In the afternoon, the limited handmade cream puffs are a must-try, paired with "Ryukyu Flower Tea" or locally baked coffee. Take a photo with the cup placed on the wooden window sill, and the blue ocean behind it will make for a perfect shot, a must-have for any Okinawa travel album.
A convenient stopover on the Nishin Peninsula self-driving route, with easy access to nearby attractions
From a travel planning perspective, Hamabe no Chaya's location is very convenient. To the north, you can easily access Naha City, and to the east, you can visit Sefa-utaki and Shinza Cape Park within a few minutes. To the south, you can visit Mibaru Beach. If you visit Gyokusendo in the morning, you can easily come here for

🔑 Recommended Reservations and Times
The shop can be reserved online or by phone, and it's best to reserve a seat with a Pacific Ocean view in advance. It's recommended to book a lunch at 11:30 or an afternoon tea at 15:00 on weekends or during peak seasons, as it's easier to get a seat. Note that the shop is on the 2nd floor, so those with strollers or mobility issues should be aware of the need to climb stairs.
Nirai Kanai BridgeThis scenic drive in southern Okinawa is a must-see. It's actually a pair of high bridges, NIRAI Bridge and KANAI Bridge, connected together to form a large U-shaped arc. The name NIRAI KANAI is derived from the Ryukyu language, meaning the world of gods that nurtures life in the distant ocean.
Want to capture the full view of the bridge? Try the observation deck.
Most people just drive by, but if you want to capture the bridge's arc and the sea behind it in one shot, you need to head toNIRAI KANAI Bridge Observation DeckThat's the way. The observation deck is located near the military base, just above the tunnel. Be aware that this section is strictly no-stopping, so don't try to park your car by the side of the road. Instead, park at the wide shoulder near the tunnel entrance and walk along the small path for about 5 minutes to reach the railing. From there, you can take in the entire bridge and the sea behind it. This is the spot where all those 'most beautiful roads in southern Okinawa' photos are taken.
Photography tips and traffic reminder
This spot faces east, sothe morning light is best for capturing the sea's colors,

Must-try Dishes
When it comes to Okinawa's local cuisine, you can't go wrong with a hearty bowl of donburi (丼飯) topped with an abundance of sashimi-grade tuna. Each component is carefully selected to ensure a harmonious balance of flavors and textures.

Before heading to Sefa-utaki and Chinen Cape, grab lunch at this spot.
**Must-visit Spots in Southern Okinawa**
Tsunaya Dining is just a 5-minute walk from the entrance of Sefa-utaki and Kenyan Cape Park. These two spots are a must-visit in southern Okinawa, and the dining is conveniently located in the middle. Whether you visit Sefa-utaki first or Kenyan Cape Park, it's a convenient stop.
If you're traveling from Naha Airport, head north along the southern coast, passing by Sunabe Beach and Uwajima Tempura, and you'll arrive at Kenyan Peninsula around lunchtime. The timing is spot on.
For travelers heading to Kudaka Island, Anza Port is nearby, and you can easily catch a ferry after lunch.
Tip: Arrive by 10:30 to avoid the peak tourist lunchtime crowds.
Nirai Kanai 大橋:Approximately 5 minutes by car. The instant the tunnel opens, the entire elevated bridge stretches straight out to the Pacific Ocean, making it one of the must-take photos for Okinawa self-drive.
Recommended food at the museum
The food area of the Product Hall has a few local specialties. The tempura made with Mozuku from Naha City is a signature item here. Mozuku itself has a sticky texture, and after being fried, the outside is crispy, and when bitten, there is a faint sea flavor, unlike the general tempura texture.
💡 Editor's private reminder
Inside Sefa-utaki, the entire area is made of natural stone roads and mud paths, with obvious ups and downs. It's very tiring to wear flip-flops or slippers in. It's recommended to change into sports shoes after parking the car at the Product Hall and then head out. The second-floor observation deck is free to enter, and buying a snack on the first floor and bringing it up to find a spot to blow the wind and watch the sea is a great way to take a break.

270-degree Pacific Ocean view, with a glimpse of Kudaka Island
Chinen Cape Park is located at the tip of a cape in the southern city of Okinawa, facing the Pacific Ocean. Due to its geographical location, you can enjoy a 270-degree open view from here, with the sea on both sides. The color of the sea changes from a light green near the shore to a deep blue in the distance, creating a beautiful gradient that is particularly noticeable in the southern part of Okinawa.
On a good day, you can see the Komaka Island in the distance, and if you look further, you can see the outline of Kudaka Island. According to the Ryukyu mythology, Kudaka Island is considered a sacred place where the gods descended. From this vantage point, you can feel a sense of serenity that is difficult to put into words.
There are no obstructions in the park, and locals often come here to watch the sunrise on New Year's Day or lie down on the grass to gaze at the stars at night.
Places to visit near Chinen Cape: Sefa-utaki, Gajumaru Station, and Kudaka Island
Chinen Cape Park itself doesn't require much time, but it's often combined with other nearby attractions as part of a southern half-day or full-day itinerary. Some of the most commonly visited places include:
Sefa-utaki: The first sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It takes only 5-10 minutes to walk from Chinen Cape.
Gajumaru Station & Minatoguchi (Ganjuu Station): Located next to the park entrance, this is where you can buy tickets for Sefa-utaki and grab some local souvenirs or snacks.
Kudaka Island: A 15-minute drive away, this small island is home to a famous tempura shop, has a strong fishing village atmosphere, and is perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll.
Free admission, easy parking, and suitable for seniors and children
Chinen Cape Park is open all day and free to visit. The parking lot and the adjacent sports center and Gajumaru Station share the same entrance, making it easy to find a parking spot, even during peak season. The walking paths are flat and well-maintained, and there are public restrooms available. This makes it an ideal spot for seniors and children to enjoy a leisurely stroll or playtime without worrying about accessibility or safety issues.

Travel Time
About 23 kilometers from Naha City’s Kokusai Street, approximately 45 to 50 minutes by car.
First-time visitors to Sefa-utaki (せーふぁうたき) often pause at the entrance, as there are no typical shrine buildings or gates in sight—only an ancient stone path shaded by large trees leading into the dense forest. This site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the highest-ranking sacred place from the Ryukyu Kingdom era. In Okinawan dialect, "utaki" refers to a sacred space for deities and ancestors, while "sefa" signifies the highest rank. The entire sacred area consists of forests, massive rocks, and springs, with nature itself being the dwelling place of the divine.
During the Ryukyu Kingdom period, strict regulations governed the priestess system, and the inauguration ceremony for the highest priestess, "Mune Daitoku," was held here. How significant was this site? Even kings had to change into priestess attire at the entrance to pay their respects, and it was once strictly forbidden for men to enter. Today, Sefa-utaki remains more than just a tourist attraction for locals, with faith activities still taking place on ceremonial dates.
Must-Visit: Sankuri and Kudaka Island Viewing Point
Following the visitor route, you will pass several important ritual sites, with the core area being Sankuri:
Triangle Rock Passage: Two massive Ryukyu limestone rocks naturally overlap due to tectonic movements, forming a triangular opening. The moment you pass through, the light changes dramatically, making it hard not to stop for a photo or a moment of reflection.
Kudaka Island Viewing Point: After passing through the Triangle Rock Passage, the view opens up, allowing you to gaze at Kudaka Island in the Pacific Ocean. In Ryukyu mythology, this island is the landing place of the creator god "Amamikyu," known as the "Island of the Gods," giving a profound sense of significance when viewed from Sefa-utaki.
Stalactite Dripping Water: Next to the entrance of Sankuri, there are two water basins that collect dripping water from the rocks above, historically used for divination and rituals. They are well-preserved, and it's worth stopping to take a look as you pass by.
After Leaving the Sacred Site, Explore More in Nanjo City
Sefa-utaki is located on Chinen Peninsula, an area known for its beautiful scenery. If you're not in a rush, you could easily spend an extra half day here. A 5-minute drive will take you to Chinen Misaki Park, surrounded by the sea on three sides, making it one of the best places in southern Okinawa to enjoy

Toubou Makiya is a ceramic studio and exhibition space located on a hill in Naha City, Okinawa. The studio is run by ceramic artist Osamu Makiya, who is known for his traditional Okinawan ceramics, or "Yachimun." Makiya's pieces retain the thick, tactile feel of traditional Okinawan ceramics, while incorporating modern design elements and a sense of calmness.
The studio is small, with ceramic pieces displayed neatly on shelves. The most common colors used are white, blue, and caramel. Toubou Makiya is a popular spot for ceramic enthusiasts and travelers looking for unique souvenirs.
Please note that Toubou Makiya is not a tourist factory, and there is no parking lot. The studio is located on a hill in Naha City, and the drive there is scenic, with trees and hills surrounding the road. The journey itself is worth it for those who enjoy slow travel and want to experience the real Okinawa.

This is a personal studio, and Osamu Makiya may close the studio during exhibitions or when the kiln is in use. Please check their Instagram before visiting to confirm their business hours. Okinawa Once Had Railways, and This is the Only Remaining Station
Many are surprised to learn that Okinawa had a complete "light railway" system before the monorail (Yui-Rail) was established. Before World War II, the Okinawa Prefectural Railway extended three lines from Naha, with the Yonabaru Line terminating here. This station was not only a passenger hub but also a major export point for Yonabaru's specialty "Yonabaru tiles" and southern resources, playing a much more significant role in the local economy than one might imagine today.
During the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, the original station building was almost completely destroyed, leaving only a few reinforced concrete pillars. The current museum was restored in 2015 based on original design plans and old photographs, with the waiting room and ticket counter meticulously recreated. Inside, you'll find old tickets, remnants of the tracks, train models, and rare historical photos. The concrete pillars, marked with bullet holes, have been preserved in the back square and were designated as tangible cultural assets of Yonabaru in 2014.
Key Areas to Spend Time Inside the Museum
In the back square, seeing the surviving pre-war pillars in person feels quite different from viewing them in photos. The weathered concrete surface still vaguely reveals the original structure, and standing next to them imparts an indescribable weightiness.
The interactive experience area is also worth sitting down to enjoy. Step into a simulated light railway car, where a screen plays a projection combining real scenes and 3D animations, recreating the image of a steam locomotive passing through sugarcane fields. This segment is typically very appealing to children, but adults will also find it engaging, as it contains many details of daily life in Okinawa from that era.
Where to Go Next from Yonabaru: A Suggested Route Along Okinawa's Southern East Coast
Yonabaru is located on the southern east coast of Okinawa Island, not far from Naha but less frequented by tourists, offering a variety of nearby attractions. Here are a few close and conveniently linked spots:
Yonabaru Higashihama Park: About a 5-minute drive from the museum, featuring grassy areas and coastal walking paths, almost empty on weekdays, making it a great place to relax.
Sefa-utaki & Chinen Misaki Park: Drive south along National Route 331 for about 25 minutes; Sefa-utaki is the highest sacred site in Okinawa, while the sea view from Chinen Misaki is breathtaking.
Okinawa World Cultural Kingdom (Gyokusendo): About a 20-minute drive southwest from here, featuring limestone caves and a Ryukyu village experience, perfect for a

Although the garden's area is not large, it's rich in details, so it's recommended to spend at least an hour strolling around:
Heart-Shaped Pool and Stone Arched Bridge:The pool's flat outline resembles the Chinese character '心' (heart), while the two stone arched bridges, made of Ryukyu limestone, have a subtle, ambiguous feel that's hard to pinpoint as either Japanese or Chinese, but it's undeniably beautiful.
Rokkaku-do:A black-tiled, tiled-roof pavilion built on a small island in the pool, with a roofline that echoes Chinese Qing dynasty architecture, but surrounded by a quintessential Japanese garden landscape – a deliberate blend of styles that now looks surprisingly natural.
Udun (御殿):The king's resting and reception hall, with a reddish-brown tiled roof and a wooden structure reminiscent of a typical Ryukyu-style traditional house, but with tatami-mat flooring inside, creating a harmonious contrast between the two space languages.
This garden was actually a diplomatic backdrop in its heyday.
Take in the breathtaking views of Naha's southern countryside, a spot where the king himself once stood to survey the landscape incognito. Now, it's your turn.
