Northern Okinawa: Yanbaru nature and coast
Finally, we’ve made our way to the northern tip of Okinawa. This is basically a perfect spot for a self-drive trip, ideal for those looking to explore the entire island or for repeat visitors seeking hidden gems. So, come enjoy the breeze at Okinawa’s northern tip!
Here, the bustling southern region feels worlds away, featuring pristine forests recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and stunning cliffside ocean views. This is a comprehensive guide for passionate road trippers to the northern tip of Okinawa (Kunigami, Ogimi)!

Must-Visit Attractions
Cape Hedo|Stand at the Northern Tip of Okinawa
The moment you arrive at Cape Hedo, you’ll understand why it’s called the end of Okinawa. Standing on the edge of the massive cliff, the Pacific and East China Seas clash fiercely before your eyes, with the sound of waves crashing against the rocks almost drowning everything else out. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Yoron Island in Kagoshima Prefecture across the sea, a vast feeling of “standing at the edge of the world” that no photo can fully capture.
There’s also a “Yukari Special Area” monument here, a landmark where many travelers come to take photos. If you’re not in a hurry, it’s recommended to stay a while longer, as the changing light and sea colors create entirely different atmospheres.
Daisekirinzan|The World’s Northernmost Subtropical Karst Wonderland
Just a few minutes’ drive from Cape Hedo, Daisekirinzan is the northernmost subtropical karst terrain in the world, regarded by locals as a place filled with natural energy. Once you step onto the trail, the surrounding scenery will make you forget where you are—strange limestone formations jut out from the ground, and ancient banyan trees intertwine among them, creating a tranquil and mysterious atmosphere.
The trail has several routes of varying difficulty, making it easy for anyone to complete. When you reach the viewpoint, you’ll see the coastline of Cape Hedo laid out before you, a view that cannot be seen from the cape itself.
Kayabuchi Banta|Eighty-Meter Cliffs with Secluded Ocean Views
The name Kayabuchi Banta itself tells a story. Legend has it that the sea winds here are so strong that even bundles of grass blown down will scatter away, giving rise to the name “Kayabuchi.” Standing atop the eighty-meter cliff, you’ll quickly realize that this legend is not an exaggeration.
Compared to Cape Hedo, there are noticeably fewer visitors here, allowing for a quieter experience to feel the wind on the cliff, the distant horizon, and the unobstructed deep blue ocean. For travelers who enjoy tranquility, Kayabuchi Banta will be one of the most unforgettable highlights in the area.
Yambaru Kuina Observation Deck|A Hidden Photo Spot Shaped Like Okinawa’s Endemic Bird
An interesting photo spot, a giant bird-shaped structure, that’s the Yambaru Kuina Observation Deck. The Yambaru Kuina is an endemic bird of Okinawa, almost a symbol of the northern Yambaru region, and locals have created this uniquely shaped observation deck in its honor.
Climbing the observation deck not only allows for creative photos but also offers a panoramic view of the coastline of Cape Hedo. Not many know about this place, making it a worthwhile hidden gem in your northern itinerary.

🚗 Northern-tip coast drive 🚗
How far is the journey to the northern tip of Okinawa?
If starting from Nago City, a complete loop around the northern tip is about 144 kilometers, with a driving time of approximately 3 hours. It is recommended to allocate at least five hours or more for your travel time.
🚗 Drive there
🚗 Driving Tips
Fill up your tank: Gas stations become very scarce after entering Kunigami, and they close early. It’s recommended to fill up in Nago.⛽
Allow extra time: Driving from Naha to Cape Hedo via the expressway and Route 58 takes about 2.5 – 3 hours one way. It’s advisable to stay overnight in the north (like near Nago or Kouri Island) to avoid spending the whole day driving.
Use MapCode for navigation: Phone numbers in the north sometimes don’t yield accurate locations. I’ve compiled MapCodes in each sticky note introduction, but it’s best to cross-check with a map after setting it up to avoid errors.

Step into Okinawa's oldest textile tradition
In the northern part of Okinawa, Ogimi Village is home to a quiet, unassuming settlement called "Kijoka," which hides a traditional craft recognized by the Japanese government as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset: Kijoka Bashofu.
Bashofu is made from the fibers of the banana plant, lightweight and breathable, perfect for Okinawa's subtropical climate. The entire process, from planting the banana trees to harvesting, peeling, boiling, hand-spinning, and weaving, takes nearly a year and relies on natural dyes like Ryukyu indigo and wheel flower, with minimal use of modern chemicals.
The Bashofu Kaikan is the core place that preserves this craft. The first floor features an active workshop where artisans meticulously process fibers, spin, and operate handlooms. Visitors can observe up close and feel the serene rhythm of work. The second floor has an exhibition room and video screening area, presenting the long history of Bashofu from ancient Ryukyu to the present, offering a deeper understanding of this fabric.
Living National Treasure: Toshiko Hirayama
When discussing Bashofu, one cannot overlook the name Toshiko Hirayama. This woman, recognized as a "Living National Treasure" by the Japanese government, nearly single-handedly revived Kijoka Bashofu after World War II. During that time, this craft was on the verge of disappearing due to war and modernization, and it was she who led the village women to record, relearn, and weave, ensuring Kijoka remains the only place in Japan with a complete Bashofu production chain.
Visiting the Kaikan is not just about seeing a piece of fabric; it's like reading a story of a woman and a community fighting against oblivion. For travelers who appreciate deep cultural experiences, the impact here often exceeds expectations.
Kijoka offers more than just Bashofu; Ogimi Village is worth a half-day visit
If you're driving north, consider extending your time to include nearby attractions. In spring, Kijoka blooms with vast fields of cosmos flowers, creating a postcard-perfect scene with golden fields against the greenery of Yanbaru. The nearby Seven Waterfalls is a must-visit for hiking enthusiasts, where the sound of water echoes through the valley, alleviating the summer heat.
Ogimi Village is also known as a "Longevity Village," with residents boasting some of the highest average lifespans in Japan, attributed to local water quality, dietary habits, and lifestyle. The Yanbaru Forest here is part of Okinawa's World Natural Heritage site, rich in biodiversity, making it a worthwhile exploration for nature lovers.
The drive north from Naha is part of the journey itself. Plan to visit the Bashofu Kaikan in the morning, explore the exhibition, then head to the Seven Waterfalls, and spend the afternoon leisurely wandering the village, perhaps enjoying lunch at a small eatery. This half-day rhythm is just right.

A hidden craft shop in northern Okinawa
Yanbaru Kogeigumi quietly sits in the forested area of Yanbaru, a place that is hard to describe as just a shop.
The store showcases works from artisans across northern Okinawa, including ceramics, Ryukyu glass, woodworking, and the village's pride, bashofu. The space is small, but each item has a story, and the selection criteria are very strict. The focus is on whether "this work relates to this land," not just on its marketability. For those who enjoy bringing home something meaningful from their travels, this place is worth adding to your itinerary.
Bashofu from Kijyuka, a nearly lost craft
Many people hear the name "bashofu" for the first time when they arrive in Okinawa. This fabric, handwoven from the fibers of banana stalks, was a tribute to the Ryukyu Kingdom and is now designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset of Japan. The only place in the world that preserves the complete production technique is right here in Kijyuka. Yanbaru Kogeigumi is adjacent to the Bashofu Hall, allowing for a deeper understanding of the challenges in preserving this craft.
If you're planning a day trip or a two-day, one-night stay in northern Okinawa, this area can also connect you to the limestone trails of Daisekirinzan, the northern tip of the main island at Cape Hedo, or the recently opened and popular forest-themed park, JUNGLIA, making for a well-rounded and non-repetitive itinerary. This northern route is perfect for travelers who truly want to understand Okinawa.

Yambaru Distillery, formerly known as Takarikiri Distillery, is the northernmost awamori distillery in Okinawa. Established in 1950, it has been family-run for over seventy years, with its most representative brand "Maruta" well-known among locals, boasting a loyal customer base. If you're planning an in-depth trip to northern Okinawa and want to experience authentic awamori culture, Yambaru Distillery is definitely worth a visit.
The key to Yambaru Distillery's success in the awamori world is simply one word: water. The distillery uses soft water sourced from the upper reaches of the Takarikiri River flowing through the Yambaru forest, resulting in a pure and low-mineral spring water that makes the awamori exceptionally smooth and sweet, with a more refined and lingering finish compared to commercially available options.
Upon entering the distillery, you'll immediately sense that this place is different from typical tourist factories. The building retains the old-style appearance of the Showa era, with no excessive renovations. Rows of ceramic jars quietly age in the cellar, and a subtle aroma of alcohol lingers in the air. The awamori here is known for its aged varieties, which develop a warm, herbal aroma after long-term low-temperature maturation, attracting many awamori enthusiasts to visit. There is a selection area on-site where you can purchase locally exclusive "Takarikiri" limited editions or beautifully packaged souvenirs, perfect for gifts or personal use.
Visiting Yambaru Distillery also offers insight into the lifestyle of the people of Ogimi. This village consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for centenarians, and the locals brew and drink at a leisurely pace, valuing their connection with the land and time. This philosophy may subtly seep into every jar of aging awamori.

A Must-Stop for Northern Okinawa Drivers: What is Yuiyui Kunigami?
Many travelers stop here on their way to Cape Hedo or Daisekirinzan, but taking half an hour to explore reveals that this roadside station is more valuable than expected. Located at the northern tip of Okinawa in Kunigami Village, Yuiyui Kunigami is the best spot for supplies and a local lunch on the northern route.
Where Does the Name "Yuiyui" Come From?
"Yuiyui" means "helping each other, connecting" in Okinawan dialect, reflecting the island's warm hospitality. Since opening in 1999, it has played a role in revitalizing local industries in Kunigami Village. The area is covered with subtropical rainforests, rich in ecological resources, and the station features exhibits related to the conservation of Yambaru Kuina, allowing travelers to learn about the precious species protected in this pristine forest. After the Yambaru region was officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2021, Yuiyui Kunigami has become the first physical stop for many international travelers heading to northern Okinawa.
Must-Try: Inobuta Cuisine
Be sure to try "Inobuta" here. This breed, a cross between wild boar and domestic pig, has tender meat with even fat distribution and lacks the gamey taste common in wild boar, making it a local specialty found only in Kunigami Village. Whether as a set meal or rice bowl, the portions are generous, perfect for a hearty meal during your northern drive. Besides Inobuta, you can also find Kunigami donuts and various Yambaru-exclusive souvenirs, with Yambaru Kuina-themed merchandise being unique mementos to take home.
Local Crafts and Travel Information
The station also features a section showcasing local artisans' wood carvings and handicrafts, inspired by the natural materials of the Yambaru forest, with simple yet warm craftsmanship. If you plan to continue north to Cape Hedo or Daisekirinzan, the information desk usually has the latest road conditions and attraction opening information, worth asking about. Overall, Yuiyui Kunigami is not just a rest stop but a buffer zone before entering the pristine nature of northern Okinawa, allowing you to feel the rhythm of the land before fully stepping into Yambaru.

This unassuming "Waa-ya" at the "Road Station Yuiyui Kunigami" offers ingredients rarely found in tourist areas, such as Inobuta.
Inobuta, a crossbreed of wild boar and domestic pig, has firmer and sweeter meat, with evenly distributed fat and no gamey taste. This ingredient is already rare in Okinawa, and Kunigami is one of the few places with a stable supply, making it a must-try.
The signature Inobuta Soba features a clear yet rich broth, perfectly blending the sweetness of Inobuta fat with the bonito stock, while the noodles absorb the soup beautifully. Another popular dish, Inobuta Ginger Pork, is rich and flavorful, with perfectly sliced meat that caramelizes slightly in the sauce, making it a great accompaniment to rice.
The restaurant retains a Showa-era diner vibe, providing a relaxed dining environment loved by both travelers and locals. Conveniently located along National Route 58, it's ideal for lunch on a road trip to Cape Hedo, Daisekirinzan, or Kayabuchi Banta. Since Inobuta is limited in supply, it's recommended to arrive early, as certain dishes may sell out during peak hours.

Kayauchi Banta is located at the northern tip of Okinawa Island in Kunigami, a top scenic landmark within Yanbaru National Park. The cliff rises about 80 meters, offering breathtaking views of the azure East China Sea and the tranquility of the Yanbaru Fishing Port from the observation deck, leaving visitors in awe. It is especially favored by nature photography and geological exploration enthusiasts.
Origin of the Name and Cultural Story
"Kayauchi" in the Okinawan dialect means "to throw reeds," while "Banta" refers to cliffs. The name is said to originate from an interesting natural phenomenon: the towering cliffs and strong sea winds cause thrown bundles of reeds to be blown away by powerful updrafts, never reaching the ground. This name vividly describes the terrain's steepness and leaves a lasting impression of the natural winds in northern Okinawa.
Geological Value and Nearby Attractions
Kayauchi Banta is often listed as an "energy spot" in Okinawa's travel circles, closely related to its geological background. The strata here date back to the Paleozoic era, providing a valuable window into the geological history of Okinawa Island. On your visit, consider also exploring Daisekirinzan for a hiking experience in karst terrain, or continue driving to Cape Hedo to witness the spectacular confluence of the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea.

Head north from Naha, where the forest completely blocks out city noise
Asumui Haikus is nestled in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage forest, making it one of the most breathtaking luxury retreats in Okinawa.
The name is derived from the sacred site "Asumui" in Ryukyu mythology, believed to be one of the origins of the Ryukyu Kingdom's faith, a spiritual place where Okinawans have held rituals and connected with nature since ancient times. Asumui Haikus does not attempt to package this history as a tourist attraction but instead allows it to permeate every detail of the stay—from the architecture blending with the terrain to the locally sourced herbal dishes served at the table, all embodying a deliberate pace of life.
The architectural philosophy of Asumui Haikus follows the principle of "low development, high integration," with designs intentionally allowing nature to take precedence over human-made structures, as if the buildings are merely temporary guests in the forest. The number of guests is extremely limited each day, ensuring that every visitor can enjoy the complete Yanbaru forest as their private backdrop.
At night, the area is almost free of light pollution, with the Milky Way visible in stunning density overhead. In the morning, guides take guests through the nearby Daisekirinzan trails, sharing legends of the unique rock formations shaped by limestone over millions of years. The facility also offers Yanbaru forest yoga classes, allowing guests to recalibrate their bodies to the rhythm of nature through breathwork in forest clearings.

Drive north along Route 58 to reach the northern tip of Okinawa—Cape Hedo. Many travelers stop here as the final point of their northern road trip, and on the second floor of the "HEAD LINE" tourist information center, the café "Fushikubu" is perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee.
The café features floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Pacific Ocean, where you can sit at the bar and enjoy views of cliffs and azure waters. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Yoron Island in the distance. This stunning seascape is not a staged Instagram backdrop but a genuine extension of the Yanbaru World Natural Heritage's pristine coastline, making your dining experience truly unique.
The menu offers light meals, with the highlight being the aromatic Thai green curry, perfectly spicy and coconut-flavored, complementing the ocean view. For dessert, try the apple banana milkshake and locally made Yanbaru-style gelato, a refreshing treat after hiking the Cape Hedo trail under the sun.
If your northern Okinawa itinerary includes Daisekirinzan or Yanbaru National Park, Fushikubu is an excellent final stop to relax with a drink and enjoy the sea before heading south back to Naha. This way of wrapping up your day is far better than grabbing a bottle of water from a convenience store.

The cape is formed by coral reefs, where the Pacific Ocean meets the East China Sea. Powerful waves crash against the limestone cliffs, creating large white splashes. Next to the cape, there is a uniquely shapedKariyushi Yoron Statue, featuring a bird-headed human figure that symbolizes the long-standing friendship between Kunigami and Yoron Island, worth a closer look.
What’s the best way to arrange your visit? Pair it with a day trip to Daisekirinzan.

Seeing this bird for the first time is quite interesting.
Suddenly, a giant colorful bird-shaped structure, standing 11.5 meters tall, appears by the roadside, overlooking the ocean. Anyone would want to stop and take a photo. This is the 'Yambaru Kuina Observation Deck' located in Kunigami at the northern tip of Okinawa, a place many discover unexpectedly while driving around the northern part of the island and quietly add to their list of favorite spots.
The Yambaru Kuina is a flightless bird that lives only in the Yambaru forests in northern Okinawa, officially recorded by scientists only in 1981. Its existence carries a sense of mystery, residing deep in sparsely populated jungles, with a small population, and is designated as a natural monument of Japan. It is a species unique to this area.
Inside the observation deck, a spiral staircase leads up to the 'eye' of the bird, offering a view directly towards Cape Hedo and the azure Pacific Ocean. On clear days, you can even see Yoron Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, experiencing the vastness where the Pacific and East China Seas meet. Cape Hedo is also one of the first places in Japan to see the sunrise on New Year's Day, making these two attractions very close and perfect to include in your itinerary.
The observation deck is open all day and free to visit, making it an ideal spot for spontaneous stops during your road trip.

At the northern tip of Okinawa Island, in Kunigami, lies a small settlement called "Oku." Here, you won't find crowds of tourists, just the lush forests of Yanbaru and the tranquil village life. At the heart of the village is a historic store, established in 1906 (Meiji 39), still in operation today, known as Oku Kyodo Store. It is the oldest cooperative store in Okinawa and the origin of the entire Okinawa cooperative store system.
A "cooperative store" is a shop run cooperatively by all village residents, providing essential supplies, small loans, and mutual aid in an era of difficult transportation, serving as a lifeline for the village. Today, Oku Kyodo Store is still cherished and maintained by the villagers.

Explore the secrets of Yanbaru and meet Japan's rarest bird
The Yambaru Kuina Ecological Exhibition and Learning Center (also known as Yambaru Forest) is the only place in the world where you can observe the "Yambaru Kuina" up close.
The Yambaru Kuina is a national natural monument of Japan, found only in the subtropical broadleaf forests of northern Okinawa. They are naturally poor fliers and are extremely rare, currently listed as critically endangered. Here, you can see the kuina moving freely, foraging, and preening in a man-made natural environment. The star kuina in the center, "Kyon-kyon," is lively and unafraid of people, often curiously approaching the glass for great photo opportunities.
The center offers detailed ecological explanations covering the evolution, daily habits, and current survival threats faced by the Yambaru Kuina, including invasive species and roadkill issues. For families traveling with children, this is an educational and entertaining choice that balances depth and fun.

Okinawa's northernmost roadside station, the first stop into the Yanbaru World Heritage site.
"Roadside Station Yanbaru Pineapple Hill Anpa" is the 10th roadside station in Okinawa Prefecture. The rooftop features a 360-degree observation deck and swings. On clear days, you can capture both the subtropical primeval forest and the Pacific Ocean, making it one of the few high points along the northern route where you can enjoy both mountain and sea views.
If your itinerary includes Cape Hedo, Daisekirinzan, or Kayabuchi Banta, this is a natural rest stop. The parking lot is spacious, the restrooms are clean, and there is an indoor space to relax.
Taste of Pineapple Hill: A flavor exclusive to Kunigami.
The Anbo area has long been known for pineapple cultivation, and this rest stop's name and product offerings reflect that memory. The pineapple soft serve sold here is made from freshly picked local fruit, with a more pronounced sweet and sour balance than typical store-bought versions, and the line of customers is almost continuous. The souvenir section also offers limited-edition products from Kunigami, such as pineapple jam, pineapple wine, and dried pineapple, which are truly unique items you won't find elsewhere.
For travelers wanting to learn more about Yanbaru's natural ecology, the facility features displays introducing local species like the Okinawa rail.
A shared office in the forest, a hidden option for digital nomads.
One lesser-known aspect is that this place has a rare jungle co-working space on the island, with a view of expansive tree canopies outside. Holding a video conference in such an environment is probably the most brag-worthy thing about a business trip to Okinawa. For those looking to blend work and travel, Anbo's remote location surprisingly enhances focus.
Driving north from Naha, the urban feel gradually fades after passing Nago, and by the time you reach Anbo, the only sounds left are the trees and the sea breeze. This rest stop serves as a boundary, signaling that the true Yanbaru begins here.

Located in Takagi, Higashi, in the northern part of Okinawa, HIRO COFFEE FARM is nestled in a tranquil village surrounded by the lush forests of Yanbaru. This small coffee shop has gained a reputation among Okinawa coffee lovers through word of mouth, and for good reason: the owner is involved in every step from planting to harvesting to roasting, serving authentic "Okinawa coffee," which is quite rare in Japan.
First-time visitors are often drawn in by the exterior. A red building suddenly appears amidst the deep green forest, giving off a fairy-tale vibe, reminiscent of scenes from a Miyazaki film. Inside, the space is casual and minimally decorated, with an outdoor seating area that invites you to relax and daydream in the afternoon breeze.
Besides coffee, the coffee pudding is a reason many return customers come back. Made with locally sourced eggs from Higashi and their own coffee, it has a more complex texture than regular pudding, with a lingering bittersweet finish. If you're lucky, the shop cat might join you for a while.
For those planning a deep exploration of Yanbaru or heading to Daisekirinzan or Cape Hedo, this is an ideal rest stop. Note that the shop opens at 1 PM and is somewhat hidden, so it's advisable to set your navigation in advance. The northern part of Okinawa is not as easy to navigate as Naha, but most who find this place feel it's worth it.

Attraction Introduction
|Recommended Ecological Secret Spot in Northern OkinawaEntering the Silverleaf Tree Forest in Kawata, Higashi Village for the first time, it's hard not to stop at the entrance. The buttress roots rising from the ground, resembling solidified giant waves, sometimes exceed waist height and extend several meters wide, prompting almost everyone to reach for their camera at first sight.
The Silverleaf Tree (Japanese: サキシマスオウノキ) is a tropical coastal species that prefers to grow in moist mud behind the intertidal zone. Due to the soft soil, the trees have evolved this radiating buttress root structure over many years to support their massive trunks. The air in the forest is filled with the scent of moist earth and plants, surrounded by dense subtropical vegetation, creating a stark contrast to the beach resort atmosphere of Okinawa's west coast.
This is currently one of the most popular Instagram photo spots in Okinawa, and it's also ideal for travelers interested in nature to arrange in-depth ecological tours.
Historical Memory and Ecological Value of Buttress Roots
For the residents of Higashi Village, the Silverleaf Tree is more than just a scenic view; in the past, this resilient wood was used to make ship rudders and everyday wooden utensils, making it an indispensable natural resource in coastal community life.

The two most popular activities here are off-road driving and zip-lining. The off-road vehicle will take you through muddy paths, steep slopes, and lush forests, with views soaring from the ground to the treetops; the zip-line allows you to glide at high speed above the canopy, overlooking the spectacular sight of the cycad trees. This authentic experience in a World Heritage-level natural environment is hard to find elsewhere in Okinawa.
After the adventure, enjoy a cup of local Okinawan coffee
What makes this place appealing is not just the thrilling activities, but the well-organized overall experience. All adventure activities are led by professional guides who introduce the ecological background of the Yanbaru Forest along the way, making it suitable for families with children or travelers interested in ecotourism.
After the activities, since the venue is within Yayoshi Coffee Farm, you can experience the complete process from coffee bean picking to roasting, enjoying a cup of coffee that truly grows in Okinawa. Fureai Hirugi Park features Okinawa's largest mangrove forest, covering over 10 hectares of wetlands. It was designated a national natural monument decades ago and has gained attention as part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage listing for "Amami Oshima, Tokuno Island, northern Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island."
The park has a complete wooden boardwalk, allowing you to explore deep into the mangroves without worrying about muddy paths. Along the way, you can see three native mangrove species, and if you look down at the mudflats, you might spot fiddler crabs busily scuttling about and mudskippers occasionally leaping from the water's surface, creating a vibrant yet serene ecosystem at your feet.
Canoeing in Keisaji Bay's mangroves is a must-do experience
This is the most representative spot for mangrove canoeing in Okinawa. Paddle through the winding waterways, where trees frame the sky into narrow strips, and sunlight filters through the leaves. Apart from the sound of your paddles, all you hear is the water and birdsong. The tranquility here leaves a deeper impression compared to the bustling popular spots.
Note that the water level in Keisaji Bay changes significantly with the tides. It's advisable to inquire about the high tide times when making a reservation, as higher water levels provide better visibility and richer routes, greatly affecting the experience.
