Araiya Shibuya: Breathtakingly Delicious Thick-Cut Tongue!
Tucked away in a Shibuya Dogenzaka alley is “Yakiniku Horumon Araiya Shibuya,” a restaurant reputed to carry the legacy of the legendary, press-shy “Yakiniku Yamadaya.” Owner Hideki Arai spent five years at Yamadaya mastering the art of horumon (offal) preparation, inheriting its revered flavors.
Araiya’s star attraction is undoubtedly the “Special Selection Thick-Cut Salted Tongue” (Tokusen Atsugiri Tan Shio)—a true showstopper in the yakiniku world. Its arrival often elicits audible “Ohhs” of admiration. These thick slices, sourced from the tenderest, highest-quality part of the tongue, are grilled to achieve a perfect balance: lightly charred outside, bursting with juice inside. The simple salt seasoning brilliantly enhances the beef’s natural flavor. This thick-cut tongue offers a unique, addictive texture—exceptionally tender yet satisfyingly chewy—that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Beyond tongue, the Horumon (offal) selection is a major highlight at Araiya, prepared with renowned, meticulous care—like crafting art. The rare “Mentsura” (pork jowl) is a No.1 favorite; fatty yet not greasy, its aroma while sizzling over charcoal with special sauce is irresistible. The “Thick-Cut Premium Liver” is incredibly fresh, meltingly tender and subtly sweet when cooked—surprisingly elegant. Classic choices like Shimacho (large intestine) and Marucho (small intestine) are also expertly prepared, offering a delightful variety that tempts the palate.
Of course, the Seiniku (regular meat cuts) are also a strong suit. The limited-supply “Premium Harami” (skirt steak) is exceptionally tender and juicy, a true feast of flavor when grilled perfectly. Classic Karubi (ribs) and Rosu (loin) showcase carefully selected, high-quality Wagyu. Offering high-end quality at reasonable prices, Araiya delivers excellent value. For something unique, try the “BIG Hatsu Steak” (large heart steak) with herb butter sauce—its rich flavor is a delightful surprise.
Try the unique “Monk Soup,” a thick, gentle, umami-rich stew of pork and seaweed, reminiscent of Korean home-style cooking. If you have room left, the “Araiya Special Curry Rice” makes an exceptional finisher; slow-cooked with beef tongue, tendon, red wine, and spices, its deep flavor provides the perfect conclusion. Alternatively, the “Monk Soup” (an offal-based version perhaps) offers refreshing yet meaty warmth for stomach and soul.
The staff provides excellent, attentive service, creating a very comfortable atmosphere. It’s truly a top-tier yakiniku experience. Considering the incredible quality offered at such reasonable prices, the value is outstanding, and the food is simply delicious. If you’re looking for yakiniku, Araiya is the right choice!
