餃子歩兵 祇園本店 - The ultimate bite-sized gyoza experience in Gion, Kyoto
Located in the alleys of the Hanamachi district in Gion, Kyoto, 餃子歩兵 祇園本店. Opened in 2011, this small restaurant became known for its delicate gyoza and Kyoto character. From 2017, it received consecutive Michelin Guide Kyoto/Osaka Bib Gourmand recognition. It is also listed in the Tabelog Gyoza Top 100 Restaurants. It is about a 5-minute walk from Gion-Shijo Station, near Shirakawa and Tatsumi Bridge, and is filled with a strong Kyoto atmosphere.
The exterior of the shop retains the traditional wooden structure of a machiya, with red lanterns hanging high, exuding a warm Japanese sentiment. Stepping inside, the small space has a total of 10 seats, including 6 counter seats and 2 tables for two, creating an intimate and lively dining atmosphere. This is a popular restaurant, and half of the customers are foreigners. Dining at the counter allows you to watch the chefs skillfully wrap and pan-fry the gyoza up close, and the aroma of the gyoza is so fragrant that you cannot help but want to order a plate immediately! The walls of the shop are covered with Kyo-maru uchiwa fans used by maiko, adding to the unique cultural atmosphere of Gion.
Signature dishes: Bite-sized gyoza, the ultimate enjoyment of two flavors
The signature dishes of 餃子歩兵 are undoubtedly its two classic gyoza: Chive and Garlic Gyoza (Chive and Garlic Gyoza) and Ginger Gyoza (Ginger Gyoza). These two types of gyoza are wrapped in a specially made ultra-thin skin with fresh pork, Chinese cabbage, and cabbage. You can tell just by looking that the gyoza are very crispy, and the actual level of crispiness and heat is beyond imagination. The texture is light yet full of layers. The Chive and Garlic Gyoza has a rich garlic aroma and the freshness of chives, paired with the restaurant’s unique vinegar soy sauce, which is tangy and cuts through the grease; it is “wiped out in an instant.” The Ginger Gyoza features tender ginger from Kochi Prefecture, contains no garlic, and is paired with a signature miso sauce based on white miso. The warm ginger aroma is memorable, and it is especially popular among women and diners concerned about odors. Each portion of gyoza is bite-sized, with 8 pieces per portion for 600 yen (tax included). The price is affordable, making it perfect for sharing with friends or for a light solo meal.
The side dishes are well worth ordering. Meat Miso Bean Sprouts (Meat Miso Bean Sprouts) uses rich meat miso paired with crunchy bean sprouts, drizzled with a little vinegar. It is appetizing and refreshing, making it the best side dish while waiting for the gyoza. Marinated cucumber is another must-try: bite-sized pickled cucumbers tossed in sesame oil; they are a perfect match for beer, simple yet addictive. In addition, Homemade Potato Salad (Homemade Potato Salad) has a delicate texture with a faint potato aroma, and paired with a glass of ice-cold Akaboshi beer or local Kyoto sake, it perfectly enhances the dining experience. Each guest in the restaurant must order at least one portion of gyoza and one drink. Drink options range from classic beer to sake and plum wine. There is even an English menu suitable for foreign tourists, allowing diners from all over the world to order with ease.
餃子歩兵 started in 2011, with only 6 seats at a mini counter, yet it quickly conquered the taste buds of Gion gourmets with its unique gyoza flavor. In 2013, the shop relocated to its current address, preserving the townhouse atmosphere while expanding to a space with both counter and table seating, yet it still retains that intimate vibe. The founder was once a French cuisine chef who, after traveling across Japan to taste gyoza, created this small, delicate gyoza suitable for Gion maiko and geisha, becoming the local “perfect finish after drinking.” Daily fresh-purchased cabbage, Chinese cabbage, and Kochi ginger, along with a special thin-skin exclusive recipe, led to consecutive Michelin Bib Gourmand selections for 餃子歩兵 from 2017, becoming a legend in the Kyoto gyoza world.
Since seating in the restaurant is limited and reservations are not accepted, it is recommended to avoid peak hours or register according to the store’s waiting rules before taking a walk nearby. The price is affordable, with an average spend of about 1000-1999 yen per person, suitable for a casual drink or a quick meal.
