A Sukiyaki Institution Since the second year of the Meiji era: Moritaya Shijo Inokuma Main Store
The Origin of Moritaya: Shijo Inokuma Main Store
When it comes to Kuroge Wagyu in Kyoto, the long-established Moritaya is the first name that comes to mind. Since its founding in 1869, the brand has been deeply intertwined with Kyoto’s culinary culture. Among its many branches, the Shijo Inokuma Main Store holds a special place as the birthplace of Moritaya and the brand’s original starting point.
Moritaya Shijo Inokuma Main Store opened in 1976/4 as the very first restaurant under the Moritaya brand. While the brand’s founding date and the restaurant’s opening date differ, this location continues the long-standing philosophy of the brand, offering a setting perfect for family gatherings and business dinners within a traditional Kyoto-style tatami space.
The restaurant specializes in Kyoto beef raised on their own farms, alongside carefully selected Kuroge Wagyu from across the country. The quality of the meat is a point of pride, featuring delicate marbling and a rich, sweet fat that makes it a top choice for those seeking authentic sukiyaki in Kyoto. Tabelog recognized it as one of the 2024 ‘Sukiyaki/Shabu-shabu Hyakumeiten Restaurants’ with a steady rating of approximately 3.61.
The sukiyaki is prepared according to traditional Kansai methods. Beef fat is first melted in a hot pan, followed by a sprinkling of coarse sugar. The meat is seared to develop color before being drizzled with the house-made sauce. This process is designed to release the savory essence and sweet fat of the beef before the sauce balances the flavors. The meat is sliced to a perfect thickness, melting in your mouth, and is even more succulent when dipped in raw egg. Vegetables, tofu, and garland chrysanthemum are added to the pot, creating a dish with distinct layers of flavor. Beyond sukiyaki, the restaurant also serves shabu-shabu, oil-yaki, and steak. Oil-yaki is a signature Moritaya style, where thick-cut meat is quickly seared in oil and served with a dipping sauce of egg yolk and grated daikon radish, allowing you to experience the pure, unadulterated flavor of the beef.
Diverse Wagyu Menu and Budget Planning
The menu features a variety of options including sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, oil-yaki, and steak. For instance, the shabu-shabu ‘Ume’ course is 6,600 yen, while the ‘Take’ course for sukiyaki or oil-yaki starts from 7,700 yen. Lunch options include the Wagyu Hitsumabushi Gozen (2,750 yen) and the Wagyu Sukiyaki Gozen (3,300 yen).
When settling the bill, please note that a 10% service charge is added to the meal cost. For example, a 7,700 yen course has a 770 yen service charge, bringing the total to 8,470 yen; a 17,600 yen course will require an additional 1,760 yen, totaling 19,360 yen. Remember to account for this 10% service charge when planning your budget for a more accurate estimate.
Many guests opt for the special or higher-grade sukiyaki courses, which are served with an appetizer, the main meat, rice, red miso soup, and dessert.
Seating and Access
The restaurant spans the second and third floors, offering various private rooms and banquet spaces. The second floor is ideal for smaller groups, featuring horigotatsu (sunken kotatsu) seating and standard tables, while the third floor houses a banquet hall that can accommodate larger gatherings. If you prefer a quiet dining environment, we recommend requesting a private room when making your reservation.
For access, the restaurant is conveniently located a walk from Hankyu Kyoto Line Omiya Station Exit 3 of about 2 minutes, or a 3-minute walk from Shijo-Omiya Station on the Keifuku Electric Railroad. Reservations can be made online via the official website. If you are driving, you can use the partner Times parking lot; parking discounts are available, offering 1 hour and 30 minutes of free parking for lunch and 3 hours for dinner.
The charm of this restaurant lies not in flashy presentation, but in the quality of meat and the consistent, traditional techniques cultivated over many years. The sweetness of the Kyoto beef, the sequence of the Kansai-style sukiyaki, and the comfortable tatami seating allow diners to focus entirely on the meat and sauce in the pot. If you are looking for a historic Wagyu sukiyaki experience in Kyoto, the Shijo Inokuma Main Store is an excellent choice.
