Sukiyaki at Kyoto Station: Moritaya JR Kyoto Isetan
Wagyu cuisine and window views on the 11th floor of Kyoto Station
Located on the 11th floor of the JR Kyoto Isetan department store connected to Kyoto Station, Moritaya offers seating facing the city, allowing diners to enjoy views of Kyoto Tower and the distant mountains. Established in 1869, the Moritaya brand is renowned for its Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black) beef dishes. This branch, situated within the department store connected to the station, is perfect for a meal immediately upon arriving in Kyoto or for a final Wagyu feast before departure.
The restaurant offers tables, counter seating, and tatami-mat private rooms; guests can request seating based on their party size. Window seats and private rooms should be requested at the time of booking. If you wish to view the Gozan no Okuribi (Daimonji bonfire) in August, please confirm arrangements for that specific day separately.
The signature dish here is Kansai-style sukiyaki. Beef tallow is spread in the pot, followed by a sprinkling of coarse sugar, before the beef slices are placed on top to sear. The meat gradually browns in the sugar and fat, developing a slightly charred aroma on the outside while retaining the sweetness of the fat inside. Once the meat is seared to perfection, the house-made sauce—passed down through generations—is poured in. The sauce is slightly sweet with the depth of soy sauce, blending perfectly with the natural sweetness of the meat, which is the traditional Kansai way of enjoying sukiyaki. When eating, dip the meat into beaten raw egg before taking a bite. The rich Wagyu fat melts in your mouth, delivering a harmony of sweetness and umami; many diners find themselves pausing after the first bite to savor the layers of fat and sauce.
The restaurant uses Wagyu beef from its own farms, primarily in the Tanba region of northern Kyoto, emphasizing the ‘born in Kyoto, raised in Kyoto’ philosophy. The marbling is not overly intense, but it carries a distinct, fragrant fat that remains tender and not overly greasy after cooking. In addition to sukiyaki, the restaurant serves shabu-shabu, oil-yaki, and steak. However, most guests opt for the classic Kansai-style sukiyaki, as it has been the restaurant’s specialty since its founding.
Choosing between Lunch Gozen and full Wagyu courses
Moritaya’s lunch menu offers a wide variety of choices, ranging from the 2750 yen steak gozen to the 7700 yen fillet steak course, as well as Wagyu hot pot and Wagyu hitsumabushi, also starting at 2750 yen. For lunch, the 130g sirloin steak is 6600 yen, and the 130g fillet steak is 7700 yen, allowing you to experience the flavors of different Wagyu cuts.
Dinner options include sukiyaki and shabu-shabu. Full sukiyaki courses range from the Take course at 7700 yen to the Kiwami course at 13200 yen, while shabu-shabu starts from the Ume course at 6600 yen, allowing you to choose the meal that suits your needs. Prices on the official website include tax, and there is no additional service charge or seating fee. Teppanyaki requires a reservation and is available for two or more people; the Matsu course is 13750 yen per person.
From the restaurant, you can look out over Kyoto Tower and the surrounding cityscape. At night, the lights of the tower and the city intertwine to create a backdrop for your meal. The restaurant holds a rating of approximately 3.58 on gourmet review sites and has been selected as one of the Sukiyaki and Shabu-shabu Hyakumeiten selection. Reviews often mention the sweetness and tenderness of the meat, the flavor of the sauce, and the atmosphere of eating sukiyaki while looking at the night view from a high floor. Prices generally range from just over two thousand to three thousand yen for lunch and five thousand to over ten thousand yen for dinner, depending on the portion size and grade of meat selected.
Business Hours, Access, and Reservations
Moritaya offers a variety of seating options, including tables, counters, and tatami-mat private rooms, to suit different dining needs. The restaurant is open daily from 11:00 to 22:00, with last entry at 21:00. Lunch is served until 16:00, with last entry at 15:45. As seating is limited, it is recommended to book in advance and inform the staff of your party size, meal preferences, and seating requests.Official booking is handled via autoreserve
The restaurant is very conveniently located, about a 3-minute walk from the JR Kyoto Station West Exit, from Subway Karasuma Line Kyoto Station Central 2 ticket gate, about 10 minutes on foot, and about 5 minutes from the Kintetsu Kyoto Station. The restaurant has no fixed holidays; closures follow the Isetan schedule.
Finding a place at Kyoto Station to sit down and properly enjoy a pot of Kansai-style sukiyaki is not always easy. The restaurant continues the methods passed down since the Meiji era: searing before simmering, using meat from their own farms, and utilizing a sauce handed down through generations. The meat changes color slowly in the sugar and beef tallow, and the sweet aroma rises as the sauce boils. Paired with meat dipped in egg, this is the direct appeal of Moritaya. If you are looking for a sukiyaki restaurant near Kyoto Station with history and a unique style, this place is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.
