Tokyo Nihonbashi Dining: Sukiyaki and Shabu-shabu at Ningyocho Imahan Main Store

Information updated: 2026-10-13.The Ningyocho Imahan Main Store opened its new building on 2026-9-1. Sukiyaki and shabu-shabu are served on the second floor of the new building, while the teppanyaki restaurant ‘Kisentei’ is located on the third floor. The full building grand opening is scheduled for 2026-11-16. The environment photos, dining experiences, and old menus below are preserved as historical records; please refer to the end of the article for current shop information.

Located in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, the Ningyocho Imahan Main Store was founded in Meiji 28 (1895) and is a long-established restaurant famous for its sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, and grilled wagyu steak. The interior features an Edo-period merchant style, creating a serene and comfortable dining atmosphere. The restaurant selects its own premium Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black beef), known for its beautifully marbled fat that melts in your mouth, offering diners an ultimate culinary experience.

Environment and Service

The Ningyocho Imahan Main Store stands on the former site of the famous ‘Kisentei’ rokyoku storytelling theater. At that time, the first floor featured a teppanyaki area where chefs cooked right in front of guests, making the meal highly interactive. The second floor offered traditional Japanese dishes like sukiyaki and shabu-shabu. The restaurant places great importance on ingredient freshness. The head chef at the time, Mr. Aoki, was dedicated to bringing out the best flavors of the ingredients (the current head chef listed on the official website is Kimiko Yanagisawa), selecting seasonal seafood and mountain delicacies to reflect the four seasons. Furthermore, the choice of tableware complements the colors of the dishes, showcasing an elegant sense of taste.

Dining Options for Every Occasion

Due to its proximity to Suitengu Shrine, this is a top choice for families celebrating milestones such as the hundred-day ceremony, Shichi-Go-San, coming-of-age ceremonies, and sixtieth birthday celebrations. Many families have been loyal patrons for generations. The restaurant also offers private rooms, which are perfect for business dinners, providing excellent privacy and attentive service.

Diverse Menu Selection

The menu at Ningyocho Imahan Main Store is extensive, with sukiyaki and shabu-shabu being highly recommended. At the time, the sukiyaki course ‘Tsuki Course Tokujo’ was 14,520 yen per person, with the shabu-shabu course priced the same. As of the 2026-10 check, the current menu has been updated to courses like ‘花月 (Kagetsu)’ and ‘風月 (Fugetsu),’ both of which are 16,060 yen per person (tax included) for the Tokujo grade, plus a 12% service charge; private rooms incur an additional room fee. Additionally, it was possible to order Hokkaido-style pickled squid (1,100 yen at the time), which offered a surprisingly unique flavor. Appetizers focused on autumn ingredients such as ginkgo nuts, mukago (yam bulbils), and persimmons, highlighting the season. For soup, one could choose the matsutake dobin mushi, filled with matsutake mushrooms, shrimp, pike conger eel, ginkgo, and trefoil, which was incredibly addictive. The sashimi platter featured three types of fresh fish, including fatty medium-fatty tuna (chutoro), which had an excellent texture.

The Ultimate Sukiyaki and Shabu-shabu Experience

For the main course, the restaurant prepared specific pots for sukiyaki and shabu-shabu, allowing guests to enjoy both simultaneously. Staff members cooked at the table and served the food onto individual plates. The Kuroge Wagyu was tender and melted in the mouth, pairing perfectly with fresh vegetables. The shabu-shabu concluded with ramen noodles in a flavorful broth that left a lasting impression. The sukiyaki ended with a fluffy egg-topped rice bowl, where the soft eggs and savory sauce combined perfectly—truly delicious.

Exquisite Desserts and Attentive Service

The final dessert featured persimmons, pears, grapes, and figs paired with pudding, fully showcasing autumn flavors in a refreshing way. The staff were professional and friendly; whether introducing dishes or interacting with guests, they made everyone feel welcome. When leaving, the staff escorted guests outside and watched until they were well on their way, demonstrating the high-quality service of a long-standing establishment.

How to Enjoy Sukiyaki at Ningyocho Imahan

The restaurant recommends the following way to enjoy sukiyaki:

  1. Savor the richness of the beef: First, pour the appropriate amount of sauce into the pot. Once heated, add the beef and cook for about 10 seconds on each side until the color slightly changes. Dip it into the beaten egg and enjoy the tenderness and the aroma of the fat.

  2. Enjoy vegetables infused with meat juices: In the flavorful sauce released by the beef, add vegetables like shungiku (garland chrysanthemum), let them absorb the sauce, then dip in egg to experience the perfect harmony of vegetables and sauce.

  3. Alternate between beef and vegetables: Next, you can alternate adding beef and vegetables according to your preference, enjoying the multi-layered textures and flavors.

  4. Finish with ‘Fuwa-Tama Gohan’: Finally, heat the remaining sauce, pour in beaten eggs, stir until half-cooked, and pour over steaming hot white rice. Sprinkle with green onions and sansho pepper for the perfect finish.

Conclusion

With its long history, carefully selected Kuroge Wagyu, traditional Japanese cuisine, and attentive service, the Ningyocho Imahan Main Store remains a representative gem of Nihonbashi, Tokyo dining.
