[Osaka/Tenma] Chigusa, a long-established okonomiyaki shop founded in the Showa era
Near the Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street in Osaka, just 3 minutes from JR Tenma Station, hides an okonomiyaki shop with over seventy years of history—Chigusa. The shop is tucked away in an unassuming alley, yet it is often packed with customers queuing up, including many tourists from all over.
Stepping into this shop feels like traveling back to the Showa era. In the compact space, there are 56 seats, and staff in classic black polo shirts and green aprons bustle about. Since its founding in 1949, the shop has maintained its old-fashioned Showa charm; from the vintage furniture and television to the iron griddle used over many years, every corner is filled with stories.
The most famous item is the “Chigusa-yaki,” which has been the shop’s signature dish since its founding.
The preparation method differs from standard okonomiyaki: a layer of batter is spread on the griddle, followed by a whole slice of premium pork loin, and then covered with another layer of batter, holding the thick slice of meat between the two layers, and slowly grilled until cooked through. Because the meat is encased in batter, the heat penetrates by steaming, so despite its incredible thickness, it is not dry, but soft and juicy when bitten into. Once finished, the shop brushes on ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, and sauce, finally sprinkling it with poppy seeds. That layer of tiny seeds adds a touch of vintage flair to the appearance and provides a subtle textural change to every bite. Many describe it not as ordinary okonomiyaki, but as “thick-cut pork made in the shape of okonomiyaki.”
In addition to Chigusa-yaki, the shop also offers a “mixed” (chanpon) series, which combines pork, squid, and shrimp into okonomiyaki or yakisoba, making for a rich and flavorful dish. The yakisoba noodles are medium-thick and coat well with the sauce, a pairing many people order together. Other options include squid, shrimp, beef, or tendon, or you can switch to negiyaki or modan-yaki. The process of flipping the food yourself on the iron griddle is a daily scene in such old-fashioned shops.
When you savor it carefully, you can also taste their handmade warabi mochi. This special Japanese confection is soft and slightly elastic, melting in your mouth—perfect for having after finishing your okonomiyaki.
On “Tabelog,” Chigusa currently has a rating of 3.66 and has been awarded the title of “Tabelog 100 Restaurants (Okonomiyaki)” in the years 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. Furthermore, in 2022, it was hailed as the okonomiyaki champion of the Keihanshin region on the “Mahou no Restaurant” program.
The interior retains the atmosphere of the Showa era, with a moderate number of teppan grills and seats, and walls showing signs of long-term use. Just a few minutes’ walk from Tenma Station, it’s tucked away in an alley but often has a queue. The batter is light, the pork tender, the sauce a perfect sweet-salty balance, and that unchanged taste since the establishment. Prices are mostly around one thousand yen, making it a place to seriously enjoy okonomiyaki without spending a fortune.
Sitting in front of the teppan, watching the thick pork loin get enveloped in batter, slowly browning, and finally being cut into pieces to share with those at the table. At that moment, this old okonomiyaki shop in Tenma turns the unique method of making ‘Chigusa-yaki’ into the most direct form of satisfaction. If you’re looking for a historical okonomiyaki shop in Osaka with a clear signature dish that won’t disappoint, this is a choice worth adding to your itinerary.
