Amimoto Bekkan: Crab Multi-course Meal and Lunch Set in Shinsaibashi
From Osaka Namba Station, it takes about six minutes on foot towards the west direction of Shinsaibashi to reach ‘Amimoto Bekkan.’ This crab restaurant is part of the Kani Doraku group, featuring private rooms and a hall, with both chairs and sunken seating, making it perfect for enjoying a leisurely crab meal with family or friends. Walking into the restaurant feels like entering an old Japanese inn by the sea. On the first floor, live crabs swim slowly in aquariums, creating a quiet and dignified atmosphere, which feels particularly serene compared to typical tourist area crab restaurants. This is a high-end establishment of the Kani Doraku group, often referred to as ‘private inner dining room,’ positioned at a higher level than regular restaurants, offering multi-course meal cuisine centered around crab.
Lunch options include crab sets served before four in the afternoon. For example, the ‘Kaguya’ meal includes snow crab vinegar dish, crab and tofu skin raw seafood, crab claws, as well as Japanese steamed egg custard, battered fried dish, and crab pot-cooked rice; ‘Karin’ and ‘Kaori’ each have different combinations of crab dishes.
Crab is the star here. The restaurant uses seasonal crabs airlifted from Hokkaido, offering different varieties such as Matsuba crab and King crab according to the season. A typical meal usually starts with raw seafood, followed by steamed egg, battered fried dish, grilled or stewed dishes, and concludes with a small hot pot or pot-cooked rice. The raw seafood crab meat is pale and delicate, with a pronounced sweetness and a chewy texture; the crab meat in the steamed egg is soft, blending the egg liquid with the crab’s umami; the battered fried dish has a thin, crispy exterior while the crab meat inside remains juicy. Many people particularly mention the hot pot with extra-large crab, where thinly sliced crab meat is quickly dipped in clear broth, resulting in firm yet tender meat, with the broth becoming sweeter as it cooks. The final pot-cooked rice or crispy rice incorporates all the fresh flavors into the white rice, leaving one feeling satisfied after the meal.
In addition to snow crab, a la carte options include King crab dishes, whole boiled horsehair crab, and crab sushi. For those who enjoy sharing, options like nigiri sushi, pressed sushi, or thick rolls are available; adding a serving of crab Japanese steamed egg custard or baked crab can also satisfy different tastes.
If it’s a group meal, the restaurant also offers an all-you-can-drink package, which requires a reservation for two or more people. Beverages include beer, sake, shochu, and non-alcoholic options. First, choose a lunch set or multi-course meal, then add dishes according to your companions’ preferences, enjoying everything from appetizers to rice or rice porridge.
The interior has a Japanese inn style, with private rooms and tatami seating, suitable for those who want a quiet dining experience. Unlike street-side crab restaurants that focus on visuals, this place emphasizes the layers and rhythm of the dishes. A typical set menu usually includes several crab-based dishes, from appetizers to main courses and rice, allowing diners to appreciate the fresh taste of crab through different cooking methods. Some describe the lingering subtle sweetness in the mouth after eating, rather than just a rich or greasy feeling.
However, compared to other crab-centric restaurants, the portion sizes and quality here are relatively stable. The overall cost is approximately between ten thousand and fifteen thousand yen, depending on the chosen set menu. It is suitable for those who want to seriously enjoy a round of crab without being crowded.
This place offers a different rhythm. There are no excessive performances, just live crabs, clear soup, and steam, along with dishes that present seasonal crabs in various ways. After finishing a round and stepping out of the restaurant, the street is still lively, but the mouth retains the sweet taste of the freshly dipped crab meat.
