How to Explore Southern Okinawa: Choose Your Area and Route First

As your flight descends over the south side of Naha, you first see Senaga Island, Toyosaki’s white buildings and the sea. Further southeast, the city gives way to sugarcane fields, limestone hills and Pacific-facing villages. Southern Okinawa is not one compact sightseeing district: Tomigusuku suits an arrival or departure-day stop, Itoman combines harbour life and Okinawa war history, while Nanjo is for sacred sites, castle ruins, limestone caves and sea-view cafés.

With only half a day, choose one area. Allow a full day for Sefa Utaki, Cape Chinen, Gyokusendo and Peace Memorial Park. If you are joining the reservation-only Valley of Gangala tour, secure its time slot before deciding on Okinawa World and lunch.

How to Plan Southern Okinawa: Short Routes or a Full-Day Loop

Southern Okinawa runs from the airport area through Itoman and Yaese to Nanjo and Chinen. Distances look short on a map, but Route 331 has bends and hills, and traffic can build near Naha Airport. Pick one area for the time available instead of forcing every stop into one day.

Choose your route

Senaga Island and Toyosaki (2–4 hours): best on arrival or departure days for Umikaji Terrace, Ashibinaa Outlet, iias Okinawa Toyosaki and DMM Kariyushi Aquarium.
Itoman and Yaese (half to one day): seafood, wartime history and fishing-town culture, including Michi-no-Eki Itoman, Himeyuri Peace Museum and Peace Memorial Park.
Nanjo and Chinen (half to one day): Ryukyuan sacred sites, sea views and cafés around Sefa Utaki, Cape Chinen, Nirai Kanai Bridge and the Valley of Gangala.

A 6–7 hour Route 331 outline is Haebaru-kita IC → Sefa Utaki → Cape Chinen / Nirai Kanai Bridge → Itokazu Castle Ruins → Peace Memorial Park → Himeyuri Tower → Tomigusuku-Nakachi IC. This excludes parking and visits. Without a car, keep to the airport–Senaga–Toyosaki–Itoman corridor; Nanjo and Chinen are too dispersed to combine with Itoman comfortably.

Southern Okinawa FAQ

How much time do I need for Southern Okinawa?

Choose one area for half a day. Senaga Island and Toyosaki, or Itoman plus one war-history site, work in 3–4 hours. Sefa Utaki and Cape Chinen can also be a half-day pair. For Gyokusendo, the Valley of Gangala, Chinen and Peace Memorial Park together, allow 8–10 hours and book the Gangala tour first.

How far is it from Naha Airport?

Senaga Island and Toyosaki are usually 15–25 minutes away; Itoman Market 20–30 minutes; Okinawa World/Gyokusendo 30–40 minutes; and Cape Chinen/Sefa Utaki 45–60 minutes in normal traffic. On departure day, also allow for fuel, car return, shuttle and airport check-in.

Do I need a rental car?

Not for Senaga Island, Toyosaki and Michi-no-Eki Itoman, which can be reached on the Umikaji Liner. Nanjo, Cape Chinen and sea-view cafés are spread out, so without a car focus on Nanjo alone and use buses plus taxis rather than forcing a full southern loop.

Where should I go on arrival or departure day?

With 2–3 hours after collecting a car, choose Senaga Island or Toyosaki; add Itoman only if you have half a day. Before a flight, work back toward the airport and finish at Toyosaki or Senaga. Do not treat a 15-minute navigation estimate as available sightseeing time.

Where can I eat near Gyokusendo?

Okinawa World has Buffet Churashima and SANGO; check current opening information before departure, as Nanto-ya has been suspended since 13 February 2026. CAVE CAFE at Gangala serves drinks only for tour participants, not lunch. For a sea-view meal, drive 10–20 minutes toward Ojima or Nanjo cafés and allow queue time on weekends.

Can I combine Gyokusendo and the Valley of Gangala?

Yes. They are opposite each other, but Gangala takes about 80 minutes and Okinawa World usually needs another 2–3 hours. Reserve Gangala first, then plan lunch and performances around its fixed tour time.

Are Gangala and Sefa Utaki suitable for children, older visitors or rain?

Gangala has about 1 km of uneven walking and stairs; wheelchairs and strollers cannot enter, and sturdy non-slip shoes are essential. At Sefa Utaki, the Sangui inner area is closed to general visitors. The walk from ticket office to entrance is about 500 m, with wet stone, slopes and stairs; dress respectfully and keep quiet.

Is Gyokusendo good in rain?

It is a more reliable rainy-day option because much of the visit is underground, but the cave is damp and the grounds still include outdoor sections. Check the day’s Eisa performance time before entering the cave.

What etiquette should I follow at Sefa Utaki?

General visitors cannot enter beyond the Sangui entrance. Do not eat, shout, climb rocks, touch incense burners or cross barriers. The ticket office is about 500 m from the entrance; wet paving, slopes and steps make the site unsuitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Keep a respectful distance from worshippers.

Should I spend a day in Southern or Northern Okinawa?

Choose the north first for Churaumi Aquarium and beach-focused family travel. Choose the south for Ryukyuan culture, wartime history, limestone caves, fishing towns and sea-view cafés. Only Senaga, Toyosaki and part of Itoman work as quick airport stops; Sefa Utaki and Chinen do not.

Heart-shaped Pond and Stone Arched Bridges:The pond's outline takes the shape of the Chinese character "heart," with two stone arched bridges made of Ryukyu limestone spanning across it. The curvature of the bridges and their reflection on the water create an ambiguous beauty that is hard to define as either Japanese or Chinese, but it is undeniably beautiful.
1. Hexagonal Pavilion:2. A black-tiled pavilion on a small island in the pond, with a roof design reminiscent of Qing Dynasty architecture, surrounded by a typical Japanese garden. This blend was intentional at the time, and now it feels quite natural.
3. Udun:4. The place where the king rested and entertained guests, featuring a red-tiled wooden exterior resembling traditional Ryukyu houses. Upon entering, you'll find tatami mats inside, creating a harmonious blend of two spatial languages.

Shikinaen is intriguing not just for its garden design but for its underlying significance. During the Qing Dynasty, the Ryukyu Kingdom maintained a delicate vassal relationship, making visits from envoys a significant event. Legend has it that the king intentionally blocked all views of the sea during the garden's creation. As envoys walked through the garden without seeing the ocean, they would believe the land was vast and expansive. When they inquired, the king would casually respond that the area was so deep it seemed endless. This small landscaping decision made an island appear like a large inland nation, showcasing a clever logic that still resonates today.

The choice of plants in the garden was also calculated. Plum blossoms, willows, and tree species common in Fujian were deliberately planted for Chinese envoys, creating a sense of familiarity that eased diplomatic tensions with the garden's warmth.
