Kyoto Sukiyaki: モリタ屋 (Moritaya) Kiyamachi Store
Moritaya Kiyamachi Store(モリタ屋 木屋町店, Moritaya Kiyamachi Store) is a premium Wagyu beef specialty restaurant with over 150 years of history, located right by the Kamo River in Sanjo, Kyoto, and founded in the second year of the Meiji era (1869). Many travelers planning their Kyoto culinary journey search for “Moritaya sukiyaki” or “モリタ屋 木屋町店“, and ultimately end their search here—not because they couldn’t find other options, but because there is simply no need to look any further. As you walk along the stone path by the Kamo River into this historic building filled with the scent of aged wood, kimono-clad staff will gently guide you to your seat. Outside the window, the Kamo River sparkles, and the ridges of the Higashiyama mountains sit quietly in the distance. Tonight, there is no need to rush; just enjoy a top-tier Wagyu beef experience.
A Century of Tradition at Moritaya: A Legend of Kyoto Beef
The history of モリタ屋 dates back to the second year of the Meiji era, a time when Japan was just beginning to embrace beef culture. As Kyoto’s first beef specialty shop, the restaurant not only set a precedent but also deeply embedded a commitment to quality into every generation of its management. The restaurant owns its own ranch in the Tamba Wachi Highlands of Kyoto, where they personally select cattle and raise them in a natural environment to produce “Kyoto Beef” with delicate marbling. Because of this, every slice of Wagyu served at Moritaya Kiyamachi Store is backed by over a century and a half of expertise in selecting the finest meat.
Moritaya Sukiyaki vs. Shabu-shabu: A Guide to the Must-Try Menu at Kiyamachi
Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black Beef) is the undisputed star here, prepared as sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, oil-yaki, or steak. The most unforgettable experience is the authentic Kansai-style sukiyaki. Unlike the Tokyo method, Kansai-style sukiyaki begins by placing beef fat and granulated sugar directly into the pot to sear the beef. The sizzling sound and the rich, savory aroma are enough to immerse you completely from the very first second. Then, the secret sauce and seasonal vegetables are added, blending the sweet and savory richness with the tenderness of the meat. It makes you realize that “melt-in-your-mouth, sweet but not cloying” isn’t an exaggeration—it’s the truth.
Before the vegetables are added to the pot, the first bite of meat is the peak of the meal. The texture and flavor, created by the interplay of partially melted sugar granules, the sweet and savory sauce, and the raw egg, are impossible to compare to any other culinary experience. Following this, ingredients like firm tofu (momen-dofu), Kyoto-style wheat gluten (fu), Kujo green onions, shirataki noodles, burdock root, garland chrysanthemum, and Awaji Island onions are added. As you continue to add sauce and cook slowly, the flavors in the pot become increasingly complex—a completely different experience from home-cooked sukiyaki.
The shabu-shabu features a kombu dashi base, paired with house-made sesame sauce and ponzu, offering a refreshing yet deep flavor profile. Sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, and oil-yaki courses are categorized by grade: “Take” at 7,700 yen, “Matsu” at 8,800 yen, “Tokusen” at 10,450 yen, “Kiwami” at 13,200 yen, and “Miyabi” at 17,600 yen. Each course includes 150 grams of meat, with the specific cut varying by course. The “Take” course includes 150 grams of Wagyu, along with an appetizer, rice, and dessert, making it perfect for first-timers; the “Tokusen” course features premium loin with richer marbling, a favorite for returning gourmets.
The Kamogawa Noryo-yuka Experience at モリタ屋 木屋町店
Stepping into Moritaya Kiyamachi Store, the building itself is a sight to behold. Formerly a traditional ryotei inn, it retains the Sukiya-zukuri architectural style. Every private room exudes the historical atmosphere of the Meiji era, and simply admiring the room’s decor while seated brings a sense of peace. The private rooms face either the Kamo River or a courtyard garden, providing an expansive view that makes Kyoto’s natural beauty a part of your dining table.
During 2026, from 5/1 to 10/15, the restaurant offers the unique Kyoto “Kamogawa Noryo-yuka” (riverside dining terrace). Enjoying Wagyu on an outdoor wooden deck while listening to the murmuring water and gazing at the Higashiyama ridgeline is an experience rarely found in other cities. The Noryo-yuka requires an additional seating fee of 770 yen per person, but those who choose to pay for this atmosphere rarely regret it.
Moritaya Kiyamachi Store Reservations, Access, and Practical Information
For transportation, we recommend taking the Keihan Main Line to Sanjo Station or the Subway Tozai Line to Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station. From Sanjo Station Exit 7 or Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station Exit 1, walk about 5 minutes. The dining rooms are strictly non-smoking, though a smoking room is available. English menus and services are provided, making it very welcoming for international travelers. A 10% service charge is added to the dining bill, so please keep this in your budget before settling the check.
Because モリタ屋 木屋町店 remains consistently popular, especially during the Noryo-yuka season, reservations can be difficult to secure. We recommend booking as early as possible via AutoReserve linked on the official website or by phone once your itinerary is set. If you plan to dine on the Noryo-yuka, please check the weather forecast before heading out. The Noryo-yuka is available for dinner only, operating until 21:45, with the last entry at 20:30. The last order for food and drinks is at 20:45 and 21:15, respectively. Whether you are a first-time visitor to Kyoto or a food lover visiting specifically for high-quality Wagyu, the Moritaya sukiyaki experience is worth reserving for the most important night of your trip.
