【Tokyo Skytree】 Making Miso Soup a Main Dish - MISOJYU Tokyo Solamachi
Under the Tokyo Skytree in Tokyo Solamachi, the bustling crowd is mostly in a hurry to go upstairs or is attracted by desserts and souvenirs. MISOJYU Tokyo Solamachi Store has taken a different approach: making miso soup, which is often consumed daily but rarely appreciated, the star of a full meal. The Asakusa main store has already realized this idea, and this is their second branch. The bowl is slightly larger than what you would find at home, with vegetables cut just right for easy picking. The broth is made daily from bonito flakes and kelp, and the miso is homemade.
The most popular dish is the miso soup with large chunks of vegetables and braised pork belly. The burdock, white radish, and carrots are cut quite large, with the white radish thick like a piece found in oden. The braised pork belly is so tender that it falls apart with a gentle press, and the fat melts into the soup, with some tasting a hint of sweet star anise. The soup has a milky white color, not overly salty or bitter, primarily bringing out the sweetness of the vegetables and the freshness of the pork. The first sip feels very homely, and halfway through, you realize you’ve been picking at the vegetables while the soup slowly diminishes. It’s recommended to save the pork belly for the middle of the meal so that the fat doesn’t overwhelm the flavor from the start. Start with the soup, then try the burdock, followed by the white radish soaked in broth, and finally the sweeter carrot. Eating this bowl feels like enjoying several small dishes in succession.
The set also comes with a rice ball, half a braised egg, and three side dishes. The side dishes usually include soy sauce koji chicken with crispy edges, light edamame tofu, and tangy red turnip or cucumber, which help balance the richness. The rice ball is not large, made from organic mixed rice, and doesn’t harden easily after cooling. The rock salt is coated with a layer of sweet tea leaves, along with options like plum, salmon, brown rice, and spiced tuna, with mentaiko cheese often available at the counter. The rich soup pairs best with mentaiko cheese or salmon; if you prefer something lighter, you can choose plum or brown rice. Many people initially think the portion is small, but after finishing, they realize it’s because the soup is so prominent, and the rice mainly serves to soak up the broth.
Additionally, you can choose from four other bowls. The tofu miso soup is a reliable choice, with large tofu cubes and a refreshing broth. The aroma of mixed mushrooms is quite pronounced, and the miso flavor is usually stronger than that of the pork soup. The soy milk and scallop have a creamy texture like a thick soup, smooth and not overwhelming, with scallops sometimes being prominent and other times enveloped in soy milk. The whole tomato and beef shank infuse the miso with acidity, and the beef shank can be torn along the grain, offering a different tenderness compared to the pork belly, adding more layers of flavor.
The flavors lean towards mild, not the kind of heavy flavors that are addictive. For the first visit, you can order the pork miso soup set, with the rice ball being either mentaiko cheese or salmon. If you want to sit down again for the second visit, you can switch to the tomato beef shank or mixed mushrooms to compare white miso and red miso. After walking around the Skytree, if you don’t want to eat fried food again and don’t just want a cup of coffee to fill your stomach, this place feels more like a real meal than most fast food in shopping malls. When the wooden tray arrives, the large soup bowl occupies half the plate, with the rice ball and side dishes arranged around it, allowing you to start enjoying immediately. It doesn’t require you to remember complicated dish names. Just remembering that slightly oversized white radish and the pork belly that melts in your mouth is enough.
