A Famous Cafe in the Alleys of Kanda—Takayama Coffee's Extra-Thick Cinnamon Toast and Dark Roast Coffee
In the alleys of Kanda Awajicho, there is a coffee shop that has been open since 1994 called Takayama Coffee. It has been selected multiple times as a Tabelog Top One Hundred Kissaten and is a very iconic old-style coffee shop in the Kanda area. Pushing open the door, the interior is dimly lit with a calm atmosphere, walls lined with cups, and the air filled with the aroma of coffee beans, allowing one to feel the rich Showa-era charm.
Stepping into the shop, the retro style of the Showa era and an elegant Western atmosphere greet you. Time seems to flow particularly slowly here, and every detail reflects the owner’s passion for coffee. Whether it is the exterior surrounded by lush greenery or the black-and-white photographs of Parisian street corners on the walls, everything makes you feel as if you have stepped into an exotic story.
The most popular item is the cinnamon toast. The shop uses thick slices of toast, spreads them with plenty of butter, and sprinkles them with a thick layer of cinnamon sugar, toasting them until the exterior is crispy and the interior is soft. It is usually served cut into bite-sized pieces, accompanied by a dollop of whipped cream and a glass of apple juice. When you take a bite, the aroma of cinnamon and the richness of the butter are released simultaneously; it is sweet but not cloying, and many describe it as “shockingly thick, yet perfectly soft.” This is an almost mandatory choice when visiting this shop.
Their signature sandwich is a classic delicacy made with high-quality English bread. Tucked between the crispy bread slices are rich ingredients: ham, tuna, egg, and cheddar cheese, along with fresh lettuce. This combination is simply the perfect pairing for an afternoon break. Whether it is the light toast drizzled with rich butter or the crispy apple pie that exudes the aroma of apples, everything makes you want to taste it again and again.
The coffee is also very particular. There are two signature blends: one is “Plage,” a blend of four kinds of beans roasted in the French style, emphasizing a gentle mouthfeel with a balance of bitterness and acidity; the other is “Mer,” which uses a mix of deeper Italian and French roasts, resulting in a thicker, more layered flavor. The shop uses aged coffee beans and adjusts the water temperature according to each blend to ensure the sweetness and aroma are fully released. In addition to the blends, there are single-origin beans such as Mandheling and Blue Mountain. When ordering a cake set, the coffee is served with the cake, making for an excellent pairing.
Desserts are primarily house-made cakes. The New York cheesecake is baked in a water bath using Danish cream cheese and sour cream, resulting in a moist and rich texture; the rare cheesecake is flavored with yogurt and Grand Marnier, with sweetness kept low; the apple pie features a pastry crust filled with apple filling, served with whipped cream. These cakes are all made by the shop itself, not purchased from outside, giving them a distinct handmade quality.
Sitting in the shop, holding a cup of exquisite coffee, accompanied by a carefully prepared sandwich and a house-made apple pie, every bite feels like it takes you on a journey through the world’s flavors. The coffee here is not just a drink, but a journey; the coffee beans, through the owner’s unique aging and roasting process, release a rich and complex flavor. Every cup of coffee is like the owner’s memory of the past and expectation for the future.
This is not a place that pursues flashy decor or trendy drinks, but a traditional cafe focused on making thick-cut toast, dark roast coffee, and house-made cakes. Sit down, watch the cinnamon toast being slowly enjoyed, take a sip of warm coffee, and time seems to slow down. In the alleys of Kanda, such a shop is truly precious.
The thickness and aroma of the cinnamon toast, the layers of the coffee, and the quiet atmosphere of the shop. If you are looking for a cafe in Tokyo with a clear identity that will not disappoint, this place is definitely worth adding to your list.
