Curry Top Hundred|Curry & Wine Beppin-sha
There are many curry shops between Ochanomizu and Jimbocho, and many people treat lunch here as a mini-excursion. Within this curry triangle, Curry & Wine Beppin-sha Ochanomizu is one of the few places that explicitly labels itself as ‘Beppin.’ The ‘Beppin’ in the shop’s name is explained by the owner as meaning a ‘special item.’ The curry here is not the typical heavy, thick sauce; it follows the DELHI style, characterized by thin, aromatic, and warming soups.
This shop has been selected as a Tabelog Curry TOKYO Top Hundred 2026 restaurant—Curry & Wine Beppin-sha. The curry here is a special experience that warms both body and soul.
20 medicinal spices! The unique ‘Beppin Curry’
The signature ‘Beppin Curry’ is a gluten-free curry made with a house-made aromatic broth and over 20 secret spices, offering a refreshing texture and rich layers of flavor. This curry incorporates eight vegetables stewed in red wine, along with plenty of onions and medicinal spices, bringing a warming aroma and flavor to the body.
The term ‘Beppin’ originated in the Meiji era, when literary giants like Natsume Soseki often used it to describe beautiful women. The name ‘Beppin Curry’ also implies that this is a special curry, carrying the wish that customers will glow with beauty from the inside out.
The owner trained at the famous Kashiwa restaurant ‘Bombay,’ which in turn inherited its traditions from the historic Ueno restaurant ‘DELHI.’ Therefore, the curry here has a clear DELHI-style lineage while developing its own unique style. The signature dish is the ‘Black Beppin Kashmir Curry.’ It uses over twenty medicinal spices and a house-made aromatic broth without wheat flour, making it gluten-free. The soup is dark brown and relatively thin; upon the first bite, you taste the layers of sautéed onions and spices, followed by a slowly spreading, warm spiciness. It usually contains bone-in chicken and seasonal vegetables that are tender to the bite, allowing the broth to soak into the rice without leaving a heavy feeling. Many describe it as ‘warming the body from the inside,’ leaving a refreshing aftertaste even after finishing.
Classic Choice: Beef Tendon Kashmir Curry
If you are visiting for the first time, don’t miss the ‘Beef Tendon Kashmir Curry.’ This dish features beef tendon slow-cooked with red wine and spices, with a spice level adjustable from 1 to 6 according to personal preference. It combines the traditions of DELHI with European techniques, creating a unique flavor profile where spiciness and sweetness intertwine. Rich toppings like tomatoes, lotus root, carrots, okra, and eggplant make this dish even more delicious and nutritious.
When tasting this delicacy, try dipping the rice into the curry so the aroma of the red wine becomes even more intense. This curry is delicious; it is recommended to choose a spice level from 1 to 6 based on your usual tolerance to experience different layers of flavor.
The other option, ‘Red Beppin Medicinal Curry,’ is milder, with cardamom, ginger, and plenty of onions providing a fresh aroma; the spice level can be freely chosen from light to heavy. The ‘Beef Tendon Kashmir Curry’ uses beef tendon slow-cooked in red wine, allowing the tendon to absorb the flavors of the wine and spices, resulting in a tender texture perfect for those who want to enjoy both meat and spices. The overall menu is not complicated, but every dish revolves around the ‘Beppin’ philosophy—avoiding unnecessary heaviness and letting the spices and ingredients speak for themselves.
Recommended Pairing: House-made Amazake Lassi
To balance the spiciness of the curry, the shop recommends the house-made Amazake Lassi. This lassi has the grainy texture of rice malt, making it milder and more mellow than a standard lassi. The acidity is moderate, the sweetness is just right, and it pairs perfectly with the Kashmir curry.
Curry & Wine Beppin-sha was founded by Hiroyuki Shiga, who has extensive experience in wine restaurants, and opened in Kanda Ochanomizu in 2016-8. The curry here uses over 20 spices, such as cardamom, ginger, coriander, cumin, fennel, nutmeg, star anise, and cloves. The combination of these spices is even similar to certain herbal medicine formulas, emitting a warm aroma that is particularly popular among health-conscious customers, especially women.
Sitting in the restaurant and watching the dark soup being slowly ladled out, the aroma of the spices arrives before the taste; this is the most direct charm of this place. On an afternoon in Ochanomizu, if you are looking for a curry shop with a distinct character that is also easy to enjoy, the Kashmir curry at Beppin-sha is truly worth a special trip. It incorporates the tradition of DELHI, the warmth of medicinal spices, and a light, burden-free preparation into a single bowl, leaving a clear mark on the curry map of Jimbocho.
