Introduction

Naha City is the gateway to Okinawa. Following Kokusai Street, this article takes you north along the Yui Rail to Shuri, with must-try food at Sakaemachi Market just north of Makishi Station, experiencing the modern shopping charm of Shintoshin, and then taking the Yui Rail to explore Shuri Castle Park, covering all the attractions and food!

Asato, Sakaemachi Market: Immerse Yourself in the Local Atmosphere of Okinawa

Get off the Yui Rail at Sakaemachi Market, just a 2-minute walk away. During the day, this vibrant market is full of life, transforming into Naha’s most charming “izakaya haven” at night. The market retains a retro atmosphere from the Showa era, with many unique shops hidden in its narrow alleys.

Naha Shintoshin: A Modern Face of Naha

After enjoying the retro alleys of Sakaemachi Market, take a few stops on the Yui Rail to Shintoshin for a change of mood.

Shintoshin, officially known as Awamiyama or Opamomachi, is Naha’s fastest-growing modern shopping district, featuring large shopping centers like San-A Naha Main Place, DFS duty-free shops, trendy cafes, and chain restaurants. If your family isn’t fond of the market’s hustle and bustle, Shintoshin is definitely a satisfying compromise—shopping, dining, and buying souvenirs can all be done effortlessly.

Shuri Castle Park: The Rebirth of the Ryukyu Kingdom

Shuri Castle, the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom for 450 years, is a spiritual symbol of Okinawa’s history and culture. A fire in 2019 destroyed the main hall, but restoration efforts have not ceased. When you visit now, you can see the ongoing reconstruction of Shuri Castle up close, with the main hall set to be completed in October.

  • Shureimon Gate: Featured on the 2000 yen bill, a must-take photo! 📸

  • Shuri Kinjo-cho Stone Path: Selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Roads, this ancient stone-paved path is filled with history, flanked by century-old houses.

How to take public transport from Naha Airport to Shuri Castle?

🚃 Okinawa Yui Rail:

The Yui Rail station at Naha Airport is located onthe 2nd floor of the domestic terminal, connected by a walkway to the airport.

Head to “Makishi Station” (Makishi Station) in about 16 minutesTransportation costs:300 yen

2. Head to “Asato Station” (Asato Station)About 18 minutesTransportation costs:300 yen

To “Omoromachi Station” (Omoromachi Station) takes about 20 minutes. Transportation cost: 300 yen.

To “Shuri Station” (Shuri Station) takes about 27 minutes. Transportation cost: 340 yen. After getting off, it’s a 15-minute walk to the main hall ruins of Shuri Castle.

    • 💡 Money-saving tipsIf you plan to take the Yui Rail more than 3 times in a day, it’s recommended to buya “One-Day Pass” (800 yen)which is valid for 24 hours and is very cost-effective!

🚗 Driving

    • Parking is prohibited along the main roads around Makishi Station and Kokusai Street. The attractions map indicates reasonably priced parking lots, which charge between 200 to 400 yen per hour. For night parking, look for lots with a daily maximum fee. A little reminder: vehicles are prohibited during the pedestrian paradise on Sundays!
    • The alleys around Asato Station are very narrow with many one-way streets, so it’s recommended to park in the large parking lot on the main road and walk into Sakaemachi Market.
    • The shopping malls and duty-free shops in Shintoshin have their own large free parking lots, providing plenty of space, making it a suitable base.
    • Shuri Castle Park has an underground parking lot, which is the most convenient option (paid), but it can get full during peak season. If the official parking lot has a long queue, you can consider the private paid lots near “Ryutan Pond” or next to “Shuri High School.”

How much time should you spend at Shuri Castle? At least 1.5 hours is recommended, 2 hours if you take it slow.

Many people schedule Shuri Castle for half a day, but end up leaving in 40 minutes. It’s not that the attraction is lacking, but the approach is wrong.

Shuri Castle Park is much larger than most people imagine. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from Yui Rail Shuri Station to the Shureimon entrance. Once inside the park, just walking slowly along the castle walls, visiting the main hall’s courtyard, and climbing the walls for a view of Naha city can easily take an hour.

If it’s your first visit, here’s a suggested time allocation:

  • Shureimon → Kwanmon → Suisenmon: Take photos along the way and feel the grandeur of the Ryukyu gates, about 20–30 minutes.
  • Main Hall Area: The reconstruction of Shuri Castle is still ongoing, allowing you to see the restoration work up close. This historical site offers a unique experience, about 20–30 minutes.
  • Walking along the castle walls + overlooking Naha city: On a clear day, the view is excellent, allowing you to see the coastline, about 15–20 minutes.
  • Ending with nearby food: After descending, walk down the slope to find several long-established Okinawa noodle shops. Plan for 30–40 minutes to enjoy a meal before leaving.

In total, a quick visit takes about 1 hour, while a leisurely tour is recommended for 1.5–2 hours. If you have children or elderly with you, add an extra 30 minutes for buffer time.

A small reminder: Entry to Shuri Castle Park is free, but the paid areas around the main hall require a ticket. Shuri Castle admission is about 400 yen for adults. You can walk around the free area first to decide if you want to enter the paid area.

The park opens at 8:30 AM, so it’s recommended to arrive between 9–10 AM when there are fewer tourists and the lighting is beautiful, making it more comfortable for photos and visits. After 2–3 PM, crowds noticeably increase, especially on weekends, so plan your time accordingly.

What is Shuri Castle? A symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom that has withstood 600 years of storms.

To truly understand Shuri Castle, we must go back to the 15th century.

Shuri Castle was built around the 15th century, when Okinawa was not part of Japan but ruled by the independent regime of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Since the unification of Okinawa by the Ryukyu Dynasty in 1429, Shuri Castle has been the political and cultural center of the entire kingdom for 450 years.

Unlike the Japanese castles you may imagine, Shuri Castle’s architectural style is heavily influenced by both Chinese and Japanese cultures—its vermilion hues, lion-dogs, and Chinese-style gates reflect a strong Chinese cultural presence. This is due to the flourishing foreign trade of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which paid tribute to the Ming and Qing dynasties of China and the Satsuma Domain of Japan, maintaining close exchanges with both countries.

This rich history led to Shuri Castle being designated as Japan’s 11th World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000 under the name ‘Sites of the Ryukyu Kingdom’.

Reborn time and again through war and fire.

The fate of Shuri Castle has never been peaceful.

Before the devastating fire in 2019, Shuri Castle had faced numerous blazes, including three major fires before World War II. In 1925, Shuri Castle was designated a national treasure, but it was destroyed again during World War II due to bombardment by U.S. forces. After the war, a restoration project lasting several decades began, and it wasn’t until 1992, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Okinawa’s return to Japan, that Shuri Castle was officially rebuilt as a national park, restoring its original appearance.

However, in the early hours of October 31, 2019, a ruthless fire reduced several buildings, including the main hall, north hall, and south hall, to ashes, shocking all of Japan.

Current Shuri Castle: under reconstruction, but worth a visit.

Since 2022, Shuri Castle has officially begun restoration work, erecting temporary roofs and scaffolding, and starting the selection and processing of wood for the main hall. In 2023, the main hall construction commenced, with four main beams measuring 21.5 meters long, made of cypress wood, transported from Okayama, Aichi, and Shizuoka. The overall restoration project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.

In other words, when you visit Shuri Castle now, you are witnessing a historical restoration in progress. The Shuri Castle Restoration Division calls for visitors with the message, ‘The monument restoration project can only be seen now; once the reconstruction is complete, the opportunity will be lost,’ attracting global tourists to witness this rebirth.

Q1: What are the opening hours of Sakaemachi Market?
The opening hours of Sakaemachi Market vary by vendor type. Fresh produce stalls typically open around 10:00–18:00, making it suitable for ingredient shopping; after evening, izakayas and small bars peak around 17:00–23:00. It is recommended to visit after 17:30 to experience both the market and the nightlife atmosphere. Note that some shops are closed on Sundays, so it’s best to avoid visiting on that day.

Q2: What must-try foods are there at Sakaemachi Market?
The must-try foods at Sakaemachi Market include:

  • 🥟 べんり屋 玉玲瓏: A popular local gyoza shop, a plate of 10 pieces costs about ¥500, great value.
  • 🍺 Local Izakaya Yakitori: Enjoy Okinawa awamori and experience a Showa-style downtown night.
  • 🍲 Offal Hot Pot: Some small shops offer individual servings of offal hot pot, a favorite late-night snack among locals.
  • 🐟 Okinawan-style Side Dishes: Bitter melon stir-fried with eggs (ゴーヤーチャンプルー), sea grapes, and other Okinawan specialties.

Overall, the cost is friendly, with each person spending about ¥500–¥1,500 to eat and drink well.

Q3: Where is Sakaemachi Market located? How do I get there?
Sakaemachi Market is located in Asato, Naha, Okinawa. Take the Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yui Rail) to Asato Station, and it’s about a 3-minute walk from the station. The market has two main entrances, East and West, and the internal alleys wind like a maze, stretching about 100 meters with around 130–150 shops. It’s recommended to explore slowly with a sense of discovery.

Q4: What are the differences between Sakaemachi Market and Makishi Public Market?
The atmospheres of the two are quite different. Makishi Public Market is more commercialized and frequented by tourists; Sakaemachi Market retains a strong Showa local living feel, with most customers being local residents after work, and few tourists visit. If you want to experience the most authentic daily life in Okinawa, Sakaemachi Market is more recommended.

Q5: How much is the entrance fee for Shuri Castle?
Shuri Castle Park is divided into free areas and paid areas:

  • Outer castle area (Shureimon, Kankaimon, etc.): Free entry
  • Main hall paid area (Garden, Main Hall, etc.): Adult fee is about ¥400 (subject to changes based on open areas and reconstruction progress).

It is recommended to check the latest ticket prices on the Shuri Castle Park official website before your visit, as the open areas and ticket prices may change due to reconstruction progress.

Q6: Is Shuri Castle currently under reconstruction? What is the latest status in 2025?
The main hall of Shuri Castle was destroyed in a major fire in October 2019, which burned down the main hall, north hall, and south hall. The reconstruction of the main hall is still ongoing, with completion expected in 2026. Currently, you can enter the paid area to witness the reconstruction process through fences and display areas, which some believe is a unique historical experience in itself. The outer walls, Shureimon, and other areas are unaffected and can still be visited normally.

Q7: How long should I stay at Shuri Castle Park?
It is generally recommended to allocate 1.5–2 hours, starting from Shureimon, then visiting Kankaimon, Suisenmon, Rokukamon, and finally entering the main hall area. If you want to extend your visit to the nearby Kinjo Stone Path (a century-old stone path walk) or Tamaudun (a UNESCO World Heritage royal tomb), it is advisable to plan for half a day (3–4 hours).

Q8: What good food is near Shuri Castle?
Recommended food near Shuri Castle includes:

  • 🍜 御殿山 首里そば: A famous Okinawa noodle shop next to Shuri Castle, known for its sweet broth, often requiring a wait.
  • 🍱 Ryukyu Cuisine Restaurants around Shuri Castle: Enjoy a court-style Ryukyu cuisine set meal.
  • 🚝 Take the monorail to Asato Station: It takes about 10 minutes to reach Sakaemachi Market, making it a perfect plan to transition to izakayas at night.
  • Cafes along Kinjō-chō Stone Path: A nice place to take a break during your walk, with a relaxed atmosphere.

Q9: What fun activities are there in Naha Shintoshin?
Naha Shintoshin (Omoromachi) is the most modern area in Naha, with highlights including:
