【Akasaka】A Charcoal-Grilled Feast for Everyone: Yakiniku Horumon Kinju Hanare (Beef & Non-Beef Options)

In the evenings in Akasaka, amidst alleys where skyscrapers and izakayas intersect, lies a yakiniku restaurant renowned for its offal and premium meat. The restaurant, named Yakiniku Horumon Kinju Hanare (Japanese: 焼肉ホルモン金樹 はなれ), is a branch of the Kinju series in Akasaka and has been selected as one of the Tabelog Yakiniku TOKYO Top 100 Restaurants in recent years. It is not a place that merely piles up high-end Wagyu beef; rather, it is a restaurant that maximizes the freshness of offal and the aroma of charcoal grilling, while simultaneously retaining sufficient options for companions who do not eat beef.

Stepping inside, the iron grill and charcoal fire on the table take center stage. The air carries a hint of charcoal smoke and the sweet-savory scent of sauce. The seating is not overly spacious, but it creates a rhythm that invites you to grill and eat at a leisurely pace. The menu focuses on beef and various types of offal, but what truly puts companions at ease is that pork and chicken options are clearly listed, ensuring those who don’t eat beef aren’t left just nibbling on lettuce.

Companions who do not eat beef can start from the ‘Pork/Chicken’ section. The pork jowl (tontoro) has a distinct layer of fat; when grilled until the edges are slightly charred, the fat melts while the meat remains tender, offering a sweet flavor that pairs perfectly with lettuce or kimchi. The Daisen chicken thigh (Daisen-dori momo) is a Japanese-raised chicken; the meat is firm yet not dry, and after grilling, the surface becomes aromatic while the inside remains juicy, offering more depth than standard chicken. Chicken cartilage (yagen nankotsu) is a choice for those who enjoy texture—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside—making it a great companion for beer or shochu. Pork ribs (buta-karubi) are also available; once grilled, the fat and sauce meld together, providing a familiar and comforting choice for those accustomed to pork. These items are relatively affordable, and the portions are sufficient for grilling and chatting, ensuring those who don’t eat beef don’t feel like they are just tagging along.

Of course, the restaurant’s signature remains its beef. The specially selected fresh beef tongue (tokusen nama-tan shio) is a must-order for many; the slices are thick, and after being grilled over charcoal, the exterior is slightly charred while the interior remains soft and juicy, free from any overpowering gamey odors, delivering a direct, salty, and savory punch. The skirt steak (harami) and shoulder cut (misuji) are also frequently mentioned; the former offers chewiness and juices, while the latter is even more tender. The offal section is another highlight: fresh offal platters, salted offal, spicy red offal, as well as premium liver, first stomach (upper mino), and small intestine (marucho) are all cleaned thoroughly, with almost no noticeable odor. Some diners start with heart sashimi (hatsu-sashi) or first stomach sashimi to experience the freshness of raw ingredients before moving on to grilled items. These offal dishes are intriguing for those who enjoy challenging their palate, but for those who are not accustomed to them, the restaurant provides clear alternatives with premium cuts, pork, and chicken.

Side dishes are also worth noting. Morioka cold noodles are a traditional item at the restaurant; the noodles are chewy and the broth is refreshing, making them perfect for finishing a meal after charcoal-grilled meats. Yam kimchi, various namul, Korean-style cold tofu, and simple egg drop soup or seaweed soup help balance the richness of the fats. Lettuce and garlic slices are staples on the yakiniku table; wrapping the grilled meat with them brings out both aroma and a refreshing sensation.

The charm of this restaurant lies in its ability to allow beef lovers and those who do not eat beef to sit at the same table and each find something they want to grill. While the beef tongue and offal are highlights, the presence of pork and chicken ensures that companions do not have to compromise. The sound of meat slowly changing color on the charcoal fire and the fat dripping down, interwoven with the conversations nearby, makes for a truly satisfying experience in the heart of an Akasaka night.
