The Shohoku of the Kanagawa Yakitori World!! Yokohama Ribatei Tsuruyacho Branch
In Tsuruyacho, Yokohama, stands a branch of Yokohama Ribatei, a charcoal-grilled yakitori institution with over eighty years of history. It is widely regarded as the best yakitori izakaya in Kanagawa Prefecture. This long-established restaurant has enjoyed a prestigious reputation in the Kannai area since the early Showa period, and has now brought its delicious flavors to the vicinity of Yokohama Station with the opening of Yokohama Ribatei Tsuruyacho. The restaurant opened in 2021-9, with the explicit goal of bringing the flavors of Ribatei, which have long been beloved, to this location.
The Yokohama Ribatei Tsuruyacho branch utilizes unique Kamawa techniques to ensure the perfect ratio of beer foam, a detail that makes it stand out among many Japanese restaurants. The interior decor harkens back to the Meiji era, with a luxurious ship cabin design that offers customers a unique dining experience akin to time travel.
The signature menu is an omakase (chef’s course) meticulously prepared by skilled chefs, with every skewer showcasing the chef’s respect and passion for the ingredients. There are approximately thirteen dishes, priced at around eight thousand eight hundred yen. There is no menu to choose from; everything is left to the chef to decide the dishes for the day. The restaurant describes itself as ‘onko-chishin’ (learning from the past to create the new)—preserving the traditional flavors since its founding while also attempting to innovate using local free-range chicken and seasonal vegetables from various regions. This is not the type of yakitori restaurant that offers everything; rather, it adheres to the philosophy of ‘offering only one set course’.
The course usually begins with nukazuke (rice bran pickles). The restaurant notes that this nuka-doko (pickling bed) has been passed down since the founding, spanning over seventy years. The acidity of the pickles awakens the palate, followed by the yakitori. Ribatei’s ‘hatsu’ (chicken heart) is very famous and is typically served topped with ginger. It is said that this way of serving is an original creation of this shop. The heart is grilled until slightly charred on the outside while remaining elastic on the inside, and the pungent aroma of the ginger enhances the sweetness of the fat, making every bite incredibly refreshing. The teba (chicken wing) karaage is also a classic since the founding; it is fried rather than grilled, resulting in a crispy skin and juicy meat that provides a sharp contrast to the charcoal-grilled skewers that follow.
The skewers are their signature dish. From heart skewers bursting with ginger flavor to firm-textured chicken liver, as well as wagyu beef tongue and various side dishes, they have it all. They select tender young chickens and incorporate different breeds such as Kumano Jidori and Takasaka chicken to adjust the texture. Each skewer is quite large and substantial. Yakitori lovers are sure to be satisfied.
The charcoal used is binchotan. The types of skewers vary depending on the day, with common offerings including skin, liver, breast, and neck, as well as combinations of jidori and wagyu beef tongue. The restaurant mentions Ashizuri Farm in Kochi Prefecture and ‘Kuro-O’ (Black King) Kuro Satsuma chicken from Kagoshima Prefecture, with the birds brought in whole and prepared in-house. Vegetable skewers also appear, using fresh seasonal ingredients from various regions. One of the specialties is a whole green pepper stuffed with broth, grilled until the surface is slightly charred; when bitten into, the broth flows out, a feature many describe as a stunning experience.
The final ‘Furai Raisu’ (フライライス) (curry-flavored fried rice) is the signature closing dish. The origin of this dish dates back to the roots of the restaurant’s name—during the post-war occupation of Yokohama, the founder bought a bar called ‘Bar Liberty’ and renamed it Ribatei to start selling yakitori. The curry-flavored fried rice is a legacy from that era; while it looks ordinary, it has an indescribable sense of nostalgia, and many people come specifically for this dish.
The space is described as having a Meiji-modern atmosphere, including a special room designed like a ship’s cabin. The skewers grilled over binchotan are paired with wine or seasonal local sake, which the restaurant notes are specially curated. Overall, this is not a place to just walk in and order a few skewers, but an experience that integrates seventy years of practice, the day’s ingredients, and the artisan’s judgment into one complete set. Sitting down and watching the skewers being served—from the acidity of the pickles, the elasticity of the heart, and the broth-filled green pepper, to that final bowl of curry-flavored fried rice—is the precious memory that the Yokohama Ribatei Tsuruyacho branch wants guests to take home.
For those looking for a yakitori restaurant in Yokohama with a clear heritage that doesn’t just rely on an old name, this place expresses the spirit of ‘serving only one set’ and ‘learning from the past to create the new’ quite clearly.
